Wearing shorts and sneakers, I obviously didn't fit the profile of their clientele. The art in there is amazing. If I were an artist with my work at the Bau-Xi Gallery I would have a word with the gallery manager. There was some smaller pieces that I could afford however after the way I was treated I didn't even bother asking for help.

the most interesting thing about this gallery is not its art, in my opinion, but its space. the…read moremain room in which you enter from queen street east has old hardwood floors and white walls like most galleries in the vicinity. in the centre of this space rest two archie bunker chairs that face slightly askew from each other for a cozy gander at the artwork. it is these chairs that seem to be the archetypal objects in this place. they give you a rural feel; as though the need to make the surroundings pretty were paramount (versus making it chic or cool lets say). home is where the heart is. and indeed this feels very much like someones home. once youve perused the work, all paintings or drawings this time around, you can slip through the kitchen, out to the backyard where there is a patio with a bench or two that feels quite, well, mexican. that sounds weird, i suppose, but i think it has something to do with the colours and finish on the outside of the buildings. i think this is probably the perfect place to lounge on an opening night of an exhibition, especially in good weather. now the reason for going out back, is that there is a converted garage that houses other artwork. there was, for example, a one man handmade canoe made of birch bark that was pretty lovely. a look at the current and previous exhibitions seems to offer that elizabeth russ, the owner of the gallery, favours landscapes and other subject matter of nature, as well as mixed media. now of course, it would be foolish to narrow it down any further, as the exhibits are always changing, but it seems like she provides a warm venue within which artists of many different style and mediums can show their work. so though this time around the artwork i saw didnt hit me in a strong way, i wouldnt hesitate to keep peeking inside for something that just might do so.

I don't like hurting a business over one bad experience, and maybe that's all this was - but wow! I left Framing Depot without a birthday gift for my husband and feeling completely disrespected. I wasn't treated right - plain and simple. I've used Framing Depot before and had good results, so this came out of nowhere. I placed an order ahead of my husband's birthday. On the Saturday before (they're closed Sundays), I called to confirm pickup. I gave my last name, was asked to repeat it a few times - my name is tricky and perhaps the line was bad. Then I was told - with clear irritation - "Can you just spell it?" I replied, "Sure. You just had to ask." No doubt I was a bit annoyed with his tone. When I arrived, the mat colour was wrong. The owner pointed to the paperwork and insisted it matched the order. I hadn't filled it out the paperwork, and said as much. Instead of owning the mistake, he kept pointing to the paperwork, so I firmly reminded him I hadn't filled it out - I didn't work there. Once he finally acknowledged the error, he offered to fix it - but not until Monday, the day of the birthday, which didn't work for me. He told me I had an attitude - and that I'd had it long before I arrived - referencing the earlier phone call where I'd said, "You just have to ask" when asked to spell my name. He said, " I was there, he did ask!" It became clear I was dealing with someone who was already angry with me. I said I'd come back to speak to someone else, as the interaction was going sideways. He repeated that I had an "attitude," again citing the call. I reiterated I'd be leaving and would speak with someone else. Then, out of nowhere, he said, "You're not getting a discount." I hadn't asked for one though, frankly, it would've been appropriate given the error and how I was being spoken to. He repeated that I had a bad attitude, told me he was the owner, and said, "I don't give a f***." His words. I responded, "Clearly." He seemed visibly charged and completely unaware of how he was coming across. I wasn't scared, but it did occur to me that I was alone in a store with a man twice my size who was being irrational. I admit I had a bit of tone on the phone - in response to someone being irritated with me. But even if I concede I had an attitude, does that really warrant this kind of response? "I'm the owner and I don't give a f***"? I told him I wouldn't be taking or paying for the frame. He was in agreement with not continuing to do business with one another. He then tried to break it in front of me and managed to crack it. I left empty-handed and rattled. An aggressive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable behaviour from someone running a customer-facing business. But as he said -- he didn't give a f***.

It just so happened, one month later, we got married, and we had a whole bunch of really great high quality digital photographs we needed to print. John and Sheila put a lot of care, effort and expertise into our project. They edited the photos well, and to our preferences. They were very receptive to our feedback. We ordered some small prints, but also, we bought the biggest size they offer (30 by 40 inches), and it now proudly hangs in one of the most prominent parts of our home. We are so happy and we highly recommend them.

Sheila helped me pick out a frame that would work with the photo. When it was ready a few days later I was excited to hang it on my wall. However, I didn't trust myself to hang a picture of that size. After searching unsuccessfully online for a picture hanging service, I called the studio to ask whether they had a recommendation for someone who could do it. Sheila recognized me when I called and said she and her husband would come hang it for me! They came out to my condo and brought all the tools and hardware to hang it on the wall. They even thanked me for giving them space on my wall for their art. The picture looks great. I'm so thrilled with my art and the way Sheila and John really went above and beyond.

The woman working ignored me to a spectacular, purposeful degree. The work was fine, but the art IS for sale - but even if I'd liked it enough to buy, I'd have had to abstain on principle. Perhaps there is some silence code in the art world that I don't know about, some layer of coolness that I'm supposed to expect. Perhaps I'm meant to be grateful for the opportunity to browse around undisturbed, but at the VERY least... saying hello to people who enter on a Saturday afternoon should be expected. So rude.
