However, I was pleasantly surprised at how good their sashimi and dragon roll was. Sashimi was fresh. Dragon roll was made well and tasty. We also ordered some Korean fried chicken and deep fried dumplings. The fried chicken was nicely battered, well seasoned and crispy. My child finished all the dumplings and said it was good. My only complaint is that their sashimi selection was basically salmon and tuna. It probably has more to do with the customer base. Restaurant was bright and modern. Restrooms were clean. The mood was lively with how busy it was. Service was okay for a busy restaurant. It took about 30 mins for us to receive our first item after entering the restaurant and placing our order. The restaurant was very busy with customers and takeout orders. Overall, it was a great dining experience and a 4.5 star experience.

I was expecting typical diner fare in taste and presentation. This wasn't. The menu was missing some items I've come to expect on diner menus but was full of excellent sounding spins on diner classics. The food - boy do they deliver. Excellent! The service - super friendly, though not exactly attentive. On a hot summer day, it was disappointing that we were not offered refills on drinks. 5 stars for food, took one away because of service (and the fact that we left the restaurant and went down the street to a cafe to purchase lemonade to quench our thirst).

Of course first thing is to order a large Sapporo Beer and then slowly check out the menu. This is a Japanese Restaurant that has a family feel, the seating is typical of a Western Style Family Restaurant with booth seating, sushi bar is housed what used to be a Bar. Decided to have Appetizer to share and 2 dinner items: Appetizer: 1 X Chopped Scallops Nigiri $2.95 1 X Spicy Tuna Nigiri $2.50 Both done well and just hit the spot!! Roll Roll Combo: California Roll, Dynamite Roll, House Roll. For $19.95 you get a fairly generous sized rolls filled with lots of fresh ingredients. Salmon Teriyaki : 3 slices of grilled salmon with a big mount of veggies fried Soba noodles. The salmon were done just right and not over cooked. This is served on a hot plate and that makes the noodles piping hot throughout the meal. $17.95 Being in Merritt, which is not as busy as before when they were hosting the Country Music Festival, back when Country Western Music was at the height of popularity, to have this caliber of Japanese Food here in such a small town takes extra effort for the people running the business and for travellers; it offers an alternative to the typical western style restaurants!!

The sweetness from the bourbon sauce really shone through and I was happy with the portions (not overly filling). Our server (Shane I think) came by regularly to top up drinks and checked in on us. Reading the other reviews, I see I'm not alone in stopping here en route to Penticton (it's a good mid-point for a break). There's a small parking strip on the side of the building. I love supporting smaller shops and cafes, and this particular one is indigenous-owned so it seems extra special! Love the motto, too: "Don't panic..We have bannock!". Cute! The cafe is small but clean, with Indigenous artwork on the walls. Of course we ordered bannock! I ordered a maple one, and my kid ordered a berry one (might've been the Saskatoon berry, I forget). I'll be honest, they were absolutely delicious, and fresh, and fluffy and sweet and glazed, but mine absolutely did NOT have much of a maple taste - like, AT ALL. It was like the glaze on a Krispy Kreme glazed donut. Delicious, yes, and sugary, but not maple-y. My kid's berry one was very subtle in its berry flavor. Again, excellent, but not knock-out berry-y. To me, these treats were similar to donuts without the holes. More like fluffy fritters. Delicious, but not as unique as I thought they'd be. As for the coffees....my maple latte, again, sadly, did not taste at ALL maple-y. But it was an excellent coffee: very smooth and flavorful. You could tell the beans were excellent. There just was no maple taste. But my kid had a berry latte (again, I forget what kind), but this drink was EXCELLENT and it totally DID have a distinct berry flavor to it, and it was wonderful! (We both tried both bannocks and both lattes, and we both agreed on this review). We didn't try the sandwiches but they looked quite good. They also had some cute Kekuli Cafe merch for sale.
