It's surrounded by trees and the occasional kayaker meanders past, and the beach area has a lifeguard, picnic tables, and a nice sandy beach for lazing and kids playing. It's not overrun with folks and it's clean and relaxing and I love it. It's a good 1.5hrs from Montreal (not including traffic) and that prob keeps the crowds down. The best part might be the little casse croute run by a local dad and some kids. They make the hot dogs and burgers and things when you order them on a small hotplate and chat with you at the window while you wait. It's delicious and cheap and perfect.

It was never overly crowded, so we were able to make quick stops along the hike for a snack or to take pics or even just stop to take in the view without feeling like a disturbance to anyone trying to pass. Hiking around Flume Gorge was also pretty lengthy which made for a camera roll loaded with pictures and a tired Sophie by the end of it. :) Such a fun place to check out. W the amazing views and variety of different elevations on this hike! Highly recommend!

If I did tho, you couldn't have pulled me away from the beauty of the White Mountains. I am however one of the old alums so I remember when there used to be an Old Man of the Mountain before his nose fell off lol. Anyways, this place has my entire heart and I only share it with people I trust. I took my friend here for a weekend getaway of rustic camping and hiking last April and I can safely say she also fell in love. We ran up and down I-93, I showed her the remnants of the Old Man, we stopped by the lake (lord it was cold), then we went to the Basin - beautiful in ALL seasons - and hiked a trail on-site. God I love Franconia so much. If you haven't gotten the chance to visit please make it a priority. It's stunning in all seasons! Things to know: -you can access The Basin from either side of 93. If on the far side you just need to cross under the overpass. -The Basin is paved. There are some stairs to get a closer look but it is largely accessible to view. -Still snow in some sections in late April - you're ok without spikes imo -parking was still free as of last year

Burton lsland State Park has to be the ultimate in the camping experience !…read more I have frequented many parks over my lifetime, and Burton Island is among the happiest in my camping experiences . There is not one draw-back that l can think of here. It has epic beauty. The trees and forests with lake views are magnificent. Everything is sanitary. Vermont people are exceedingly clean and conscientious about their surroundings. Camp sites are pristine. Restrooms are equipped and clean and accessible. If you are counting on an amazing camping trip, look forward to visiting Burton lsland !

Park at Kill Kare State Park and take the Island Runner to Burton Island, about a 10 minute ride. The ferry crew help to load your items onto the boat and you can pay $10 to have it delivered to your site.  Upon boarding the ferry, crew member Morgan welcomed us and gave us an overview of the Island and how everything worked. She recommended alternative swimming areas and prime sunset viewing spots. Morgan remembered us on our way back a few days later. She really made our visit that much more memorable, and the rest of the staff were super friendly as well. The island is equipped with showers & bathrooms (don't forget quarters!), trash & recycling recepticals, water spickets, kayak & canoe rentals, and weekly nature/survival lessons for kids. There are a few hiking trails and even some secret spots where you can post up and hang on the water for the day.   They offer traditional tent sites and lean-tos - some of which are right on the water. We plan to book one of these next time. Wood is available for purchase but be sure to ask for dry wood depending on recent weather conditions. The best spot about BI is the store, which is stocked with pretty much everything camping-related: beer & wine, drinks, snacks, ice, souveniers, etc. The store has a small kitchen with a grill and they make sandwiches and sides cooked to order. All of it is reasonably priced, and they accept credit/debit cards. Overall this experience was a very unique one but extremely rewarding. I highly recommend visiting Burton Island!!!

This was the first time my wife and I stayed two nights in the ramblewood cabins. We rented the…read moreBalsam Fir cabin which is located right next to First Connecticut Lake (see picture) and were not disappointed. The view was amazing. The cabin was very clean with a spacious kitchen and living room with cable TV. There were two bedrooms, one with queen size mattress and the other with two full size beds. There was also an extra full bed in the living room. The bathroom was small but functional. The cabins come with pots, pans, mugs, plates, bowls, utensils, coffee machine, microwave and fridge . Just be sure to bring your own salt, pepper, and other condiments. On Saturday we spent the whole day outside riding ATVS and water skiing. Then grabbed dinner at the Rainbow Grill on Beach Rd. It was the best food we have had in a long time. We will definitely be back Ramblewood Cabins next year and hopefully spend more than just a few days.

With so much rain this summer 2021, I decided to make most of it and do a waterfalls tour…read more Huntington is a bit out of the way and this review is based on my first visit. HG is a dramatic natural stunner. It's compact, STEEP and loud with ROARING waterfalls. Many falls, you cannot see from above and without endangering self. There's been many fatalities over the years so swimming and climbing down to the falls are heavily discouraged by the local government. There are several very short trails from the road for viewing but the trails were ridden with poison ivies! Also, there were poured granite gravels in an effort to alleviate a landslide (which is rare in VT) from the paved road. One could cross AFTER (not upstream) the Gorge to cross to the opposite side. If you desire to, I'd recommend wearing a pair of water-shoes and perhaps not soon after rain. HG is unlike any other rapids I've seen in VT. It is worth visiting to see the extreme changes of water flow and power of nature. It's an out of place, tiny compact version of gorges that you see out West. Parking is sparse...a handful of spots above the Gorge. It was a bit of a downer to see so much (signs) discouragement. Obviously peeps don't stop coming....maybe they could embrace and build safeguards for everyone to access and enjoy this beauty safely?

Huntington Gorge, the site of Richmond's first grist mill and electric generating plant, is an…read moreawesome, natural beauty. A gorgeous (and dangerous if not respected) gorge complete with waterfalls and swimming holes. Had I not read about it, I would not have known of its previous history... on first glance it appears to be an untouched site as there are no obvious signs of its previous industry. The gorge attracts a number of different types of visitors... photographers, hikers, swimmers, etc. There is a very small parking lot to house everyone stopping in. There is very strict signage posted around the property warning of the danger the site. Heed these warnings as there have been over 2 dozen deaths spanning the last 50+ years in this area. It is easy to see why... the power of these waterfalls can be heard and felt as you approach the rim. If you choose to swim here, do so in the lowest basins (avoid the upper and its currents) and be safe... stay aware of your surroundings. I was more than content viewing the falls from a safe distance despite the elevated outdoor temperature that day. The risk that some people took during my short time there (hanging over the rim for photos, wading through the waters of the upper pools) was just incredible. Be smart. There are several short paths that deliver you to various views of the area. Tread carefully and you will be rewarded with some spectacular views. I just happened upon this location on my way to hike Camel's Hump but I'm so glad my GPS brought me down the dirt road this is located off of. It's worth the visit!
