I am a hair stylist snob and have been getting my haircut at top Manhattan salons since the 1980's. My current stylist was not around and I needed a cut. He is cool, friendly, down-to-Earth and truly looking to build a relationship with his clients. I have struggled to find a great hair salon since relocating to Queens from Brooklyn three years ago, and after my last few experiences, I was beginning to wonder if I should just head back to my salon in Brooklyn despite the inconvenience. I came across Crush Studio on Yelp and Google and decided to give it a chance based on the glowing reviews. I am so glad I did, as the salon really does live up to the hype. My appointment was with Angelique, who is clearly a pro stylist. I showed her a couple of photos, and she made her own recommendations, which I greatly appreciated. She was actually the first stylist who suggested that I take less length off of the back than I said that I wanted, because additional shorter layers would reduce the weight of my hair and add volume. Needless to say, she knows what she is talking about, and I am very happy with the end result! I've always been very loyal to salons and stylists once I find a good fit (I only move on if the stylist leaves, the salon closes, or I relocate). After searching all night and morning for a salon, I came across crush studio on yelp. Based off the good reviews I decided to give it a try. I called during the morning and asked if they would be able to see me that same day and they had an opening within that hour. I headed over and was greeted by Chris - he was super friendly and easy to talk to. I told him my situation, basically I had gotten my hair colored and needed a haircut but wanted to keep some length. There was a lot of breakage as well. He took into account all of my needs and put his 2 cents in. I was extremely nervous but he made me feel so comfortable. Ive got a crush on crush. I needed to find a place to cut my 6 year old daughters hair last minute as she decided she needed a "new look" before our weekend away. I have taken her to the kiddie salons in the past, and found that the quality of the cut is always lacking. I took to yelp and saw that Crush was close by and I booked an appointment for the same evening (super easy!). We felt super welcomed as we came in, and my daughter loved the lollipops readily available. We told Chris what she wanted (cutting about 6-7 inches off) and we were off to the shampoo chair. Everyone was so sweet, and I legit felt like I was among friends...very warm atmosphere. They were amazing with my little girl - even more engaging than some children's hair cut spots that are not too far from this salon *wink*. My girl and I are so happy with the outcome, super clean cut. I dropped her off at school and watched her rip her hat off and show her friends her new cut before even sitting down at the table. That and the smile on her face itself is worth more than 5 stars. Ive already told my mother this should be her next hair cut spot and going to be booking my appointment ASAP. Ok, so this place is freakin awesome! I would so use another favorite F word of mine but let's keep it subtle. Chris and his team are amazing. I went in there with extremely long hair and came out with extremely short hair. I've been wanting to cut my long locks for a while but have been pretty hesitant because of bad cuts before. I have thick curly Latina hair and when I told chris I wanted to cut it short he sat me in a seat a legit just cut it off! My heart almost came out my a**! In a matter of seconds my long hair was on the floor (cue the violins and cries of sweet baby Jesus now)!! After possibly the best wash of my life chris went to town on my hair again! I've been going to Chris since he opened. He is the first person (besides my aunt) to ever touch my hair in 25 years! I was a Groupon hair junkie and thanks to Crush Studio, I don't think I want to do that anymore. I messaged a handful of hair salons in the Astoria area hoping to find a local place that I could go to every three months for a healthy trim. I wanted a haircut, deep condition, style and blow dry and I didn't want to break the bank to do so. I received some responses that informed me that what I wanted could be done (Great.) but I never got the vibe from any of them that they really wanted to do my hair and/or they were passionate about his/her business. When I got a message from Chris, it was a totally different ball game. In his message back, he said, "I'd love for the opportunity to do your hair... I would charge $60 for everything." True to his word, I showed up the next day, met Chris and instantly you could tell that the man loves what he does and is constantly striving to please the client. There is simply something to be said about developing a relationship with your clients and building your clientele in a great community and although Crush Studio has only been around for a year and a half or so, he is doing just that. I started coming here in February 2016 when I was in town visiting. I love what Chris has done with my hair. My hair is naturally curly and I've always struggled with finding someone who could cut my hair so that it looks nice when I wear it either curly or straight. I always get a cut with layers, and most often a Keratin treatment. Every time I leave, I'm so happy with how my hair looks. I live in Miami now, and even though it would be easier to find someone here, I'd rather make an appointment at Crush Studio with Chris during my trips back to NYC every few months. I almost never write reviews, and I've always treated getting a haircut like going to the dentist (i.e. put off making an appointment, say very little, count the minutes til it's over, let the pain set in later). My experience last night at Crush Studio not only felt worth a review-- it made me think differently about getting my hair cut. -I messaged Chris B. at about 5 pm. He responded within minutes and I was able to come in at 7:30 the same night. -When I walked in the door, he was finishing up with someone else. Rather than ignoring me until the start of my appointment, he welcomed me, offered me a drink, and caught me up to speed so I could join the conversation. -No judgment. No comments on how damaged my hair was. No sales pitches on what expensive products I should be using. In this case, not only does it REFLECT - but it RADIATES and SHINES on every level; and when you talk to and meet Chris (the owner of Crush Studio) - you'll see for yourself. Crush Studio is a new Astoria salon, and will certainly become the "go-to" place for anyone who values amazing personal service, affordability, and superb quality care for their hair. From my very first interaction with Chris over the phone, I immediately felt like I was talking to an old friend - and this was within the first 30 seconds of the conversation. 15 minutes into the phone conversation, and after a few good laughs and talking about hair, pricing, and other random things about Manhattan and Astoria - I realized....oh yea...I called to make an appointment. And am I ever glad that I did. Fast forward to a week later, I walked into the salon with my mom (who was getting a blow-out and a color consultation) - and upon entering the warm, inviting, and quaint space - we were greeted by Chris and his genuine smile - and immediately felt like we were at home and with someone who would take excellent care of us. And care he did, and then some. I've been to many a color consultations with my mom, and for myself - and I NEVER felt the comfort, genuine concern, and interest from any stylist - as I did from Chris. My mom and I explained to Chris what color she currently had in her hair - and what she wanted to change and achieve with the new color. Chris discussed the details and plans of what he could and could not do - for almost 20 minutes. Going over and over again the options, the limits, and how to maintain the integrity of the hair - while achieving what my mom wanted. Reassuring my mom that he would do the best he could to get her where she wants to be, but also being realistic that some things are not always possible (especially when dealing with already colored hair). We understood that and then he proceeded to wash my mom's hair and do the blow-out. Did I mention that mom is all about the BLOW-OUT? and wants VOLUME TO THE SKY (even though she has fine hair). How does one achieve that without torturing hair? Well, Chris used the proper Shampoo and Conditioner, a great volumizing mousse, a root lifer, and blew out her hair in a method that I've never seen before - and did it with such ease, while peppering everything with his humor, warmth, and genuine interest in making sure that my mom's hair looked perfect and to her liking. I felt like he was treating my mom, as if it were his mom - and that's exactly how my mom felt as well. The end result - hair that was absolutely volumized and styled to perfection! My mom who ALWAYS touches her hair, or has to fix something after it is done - didn't touch her hair at all; because she didn't need to. It was perfect and to her liking. Phase 1 was complete - and I proceeded to make an appointment for my mom's color and my first hair cut with Chris two weeks later. Well the two weeks later, was this past weekend - and once again Chris was AMAZING and sat through a full color consultation again with my mom (to make sure that she didn't change her mind about something) and to also discuss some other options with the color, as well. The process was seamless and the end result was exactly what my mom was looking for and wanted. A brighter, lighter and fresh perspective on the color she previously had. And once again - the whole process from color, to wash, to condition, and blow-out - was PERFECTION! She didn't touch her hair at the end of this blow-out either - 2 times in a row? That has NEVER happened!! And now onto my hair consultation about the cut and style that I was looking for. I wanted a shorter, more tapered, and more detailed version of the style I currently had. Chris talked about what he could do, and looked over my hair in detail - and proceeded to give me the most precise cut I've ever gotten. Watching out for the all the things that I told him my hair does when it is too short, or too long, or somewhere in between. I have a lot of hair, and fairly thick, and straight, but it has it's issues and limits - and Chris knew exactly how to cut it, so that it blended properly everywhere - and then blow dried and styled it perfectly - while adding in some product (it didn't need product because it was cut properly and precise, but styling product always adds that OOMPH I like) - and then I finished it off with a touch of hairspray (because how else would it hold in the heat and humidity). Two days later and after washing my hair - does it need product to be styled properly? No, it doesn't, because it's cut perfectly. Do I put product in it because I want that extra shine and OOMPH to it? OF COURSE!! A "THANK YOU" isn't enough to express how great you made my mom and I feel in both visits to your salon!
