Not only is the fish extraordinarily fresh the unique way that they put together their marquee and Tecca Maki as well as the net Garre and other specialties was quite impressive. I would highly recommend sushi aficionados to put this on the "must-visit list".... Grab yourself a gin drink (or wine if you are so inclined) but make sure to consume some of the bait.

October 14, 2023. Saturday. Lunch…read more I told my wife, we had to eat sushi in Porto. They are so close to the ocean, I was convinced it would be much fresher than anything we'd eaten in the deserts of New Mexico. On our tour of the Sandeman port wine cellars, we ran into a group that highly recommended Kanpai from a prior visit. Kanpai has a wonderful view of the Douro River. It was a 20-minute Uber ride from Sandeman. We ordered 2 porto tonicas (13 euros each), which came in generous glasses and tasted super refreshing. We ordered two of the salmon and shrimp Furai (6.90 euros each) and the sakura sashimi, a combination of 20 slices for 21 euros. The Furai Temaki wraps tasted delicious and they were generous with the salmon. Sashimi slices were large and thick, but they weren't as fresh as I expected. Service was fast, at least the wraps and drinks came out fast. Sashimi took about 15 minutes, but that's expected if they aren't pre-cut slices, which they should never be. A great view of the river, fast service, good prices, but I am subtracting one star because the sashimi didn't taste super fresh. Maybe just visited here on an off day?

We were led into a circular room and were served sparkling wine, gratis. We were informed that the building was the former residence of an Ambassador, back in the day. What captures the eye are the bas-relief on the walls and ceiling. Awesome art. After we finished our wine, we were led upstairs to the dining rooms. Again, the art was breathtaking. Then came the food. My wife, the sushi expert ordered her dish and promptly said it was the best sushi she ever had (and she's eaten a lot of it). I ordered a tuna steak and it was delicious. The service was friendly and informed. The wine was clearly from a well/stocked cellar. Without a second thought, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves seafood.
