Strangely, and unexpectedly, the service here is amazing! I…read moresay that because at most normal hardware outlets (read 'B&Q') you are served by people who seem quite inept (sure there are many that are not). Always with a smile, always with a view to actually helping you. The people are knowledgeable and will even point you toward cheaper alternatives that will do the job you have in hand just as well as the product you initially came in for. Therein lies the best part of interacting with the staff here: they want to understand the job you are doing first, and then they will sort you out with the right product. I've bought a range of fence panels, treated wood for external construction, screws and bolts of different types and even had these delivered to my home address. Great quality and service from my arrival to product delivery. I happily travel that little extra distance to go here and get my stuff.

As a family we have changed most of our everyday use products to eco-friendly which is kinder to the Planet and also to our own skin and bodies. My favourite products are the washing up liquid which lasts ages and is so kind to the hands as well as the wildlife and environment, the lavender and geranium handwash which again lasts ages and smells gorgeous. We also use the aloe vera shampoo and conditioner and the luxury sampoo and conditioner for damaged hair, the aleppo soap which floats in the bath, lasts absolutely ages and is very gentle so idea for people with skin complaints, the aloe vera soap, the aloe vera health drink we swear by now, the bin liners and other bags are all d2w which means unlike other biodegradable bags they don;t need exact conditions of light and heat to start the process but will biodegrade in approx 18 months. I could carry on listing lots of products i have tried and use but this is just a taster.

Yes, I felt like a bit of an outsider walking in, dodging the palettes of timber and pipe and bags of cement. For one thing, I didn't know what half the stuff Wickes sells is - bathroom fittings, kitchen wotsits, flooring... But anyway, it was easy to see where all that stuff was, so the signage is good. But five stars go to the man who told me very helpfully about how to go about stripping and wallpapering a room. 3 hours later, with 3 walls out of 4 done completely in record time, it was clear his advice was good. He even told me not to buy some things I wouldn't use, which is very generous since presumably, Wickes wants to sell them to me regardless. They have a new range of paint out - very nice it is too, and cheaper than Dulux - which for me actually meant I could get a load of their old paint on 70% off. Bonus! Parking's easy even on a Saturday afternoon, but they lose a star because of the debacle at the tills. The tills broke - fair enough, annoying but not their fault - but the crazy woman who apparently worked there stomping around screaming about it didn't make me feel any better about being in a building supplies store on a Saturday afternoon. Although it does have the bonus that I eventually looked forward to stripping wallpaper after 15 minutes in a queue to pay....

The shop is crowded with loads of items, often stacked on each other, but somehow it doesn't feel overwhelming. Instead you feel like you are searching through found treasures. They carry everything from tables, to ornate chests to tableware and baby gifts. The staff are very helpful, but not pushy at all. I purchased a console table on Saturday afternoon and they delivered it 25 hours later on a Sunday for free! Plus, they have a nice collection of globes. And really, who doesn't love a globe?
Disastrous buying experience from Taftan's Wandsworth Bridge Road branch. Would recommend staying…read moreclear of Taftan and the new brand they said they are launching called 'the old boot company' or something similar. The sofa was bought off shop floor (from the new 'the old boot company' product range apparently) with a small discount given. I inspected the sofa carefully and took pictures before purchase to ensure I was comfortable with the quality. The sofa was mostly fine (i.e. no scuffing / tears and the only marks visible were natural hide marks) but the leather dying needed to be touched up in several areas and the sofa needed to be vacuumed under the seats. The shop keeper agreed to have these things done before delivery but both items were still outsanding upon delivery. Now to the delivery. I was appalled that such an expensive item (£2,100 for a 4 seater sofa) was delivered without plastic / bubble wrap and 2 people walked the sofa up 6 flights of stairs in a London apartment building. They didn't even ask or tell me that delivery would be an issue and cause damage as I could have at that point declined delivery. The sofa was damaged materially during delivery - visible scuffing in many places, broken leg, lots of small scratches / marks and discolouration on one arm, a small tear in leather on the side of the sofa which I think could easily rip open further over time. In any case, no longer the look of a 'new' expensive sofa and a reduced shelf life. Initially Taftan agreed to fix it and make it perfect ("it was a really difficult delivery but we will make sure you end up with a perfect sofa" were their exact words) - nothing of the sort was done. The leg broken during delivery was hammered back in however damage to the leather (which is what I paid so much for) was not fixed. Some 'touching up' was done by the shop keeper himself even though I was told the touching up related to delivery damage and also the touching up initially agreed on purchase would be done by their professional leather 'finisher'. The shop keeper used what appeared to be a black texta / marker pen to paint over problem areas and much of that colour has since evaporated. The leather torn during delivery was not fixed. I asked Taftan that I would like all the damage that was caused during delivery written specifically into my warranty such that for example if the small tear soon becomes a large tear, it is covered etc. They agreed to do this over phone / text messages but I have not received a revised warranty. Taftan has not returned any calls since I started asking for a return / refund due to inadequate resolution of damage caused during delivery. After making me wait for weeks, they have recently sent text messages denying that any damage was done at all. They are now suggesting that the damage was already there when I purchased the sofa and I somehow missed all of it. At the time of buying I was told the product was 'as new' and had only been in the shop for 2 weeks. Taftan by text messages has also threatened to pursue legal action against me if I take any of the steps I told them I planned to take if nothing was done to fix the damage - i.e. write reviews, contact trade services and my credit card company to seek resolution and refund. These are my rights as a consumer.

Redmount was recommended to me by a friend who called in one of their plumbers to fix the problem…read moreand overall was content with the result. Unfortunately, my experience was far from 'fast' and efficient. I called in a plumber to sort out the leak under my sink. Unfortunately, it was out of his capabilities as the leak was inside the building wall. I have asked the plumber, named Meguid, to have a look at the shower head that also has a leakage issue. Meguid did not have the parts with him but tightened the existing fitting and secured it with a tape, and offered to come back with necessary parts if it continues to leak. The leak indeed occurred again, so I tried calling Meguid to get him to come back with the necessary parts. To sum it up, I had to chase him by calling twice a week over a period of 5 weeks trying to arrange for him to come back. On various occasions he answered my calls, every time coming up with excuses and promising to call back. Never happened! So I gave up on waiting, and called RedMound and complained. They took 2 weeks to investigate and their solution was to call another plumber, pay full call charge again plus the charge for the parts. I wasted 7 weeks waiting for them to sort out what is a relatively simple issue and they do not feel responsible for the wrong doing and attitudes of their plumbers.

So going out into the world of DIY shops and at first using a lot of the big hardware chains and pound shops too I saw a range of prices from quite high (several pounds for a simple screwdriver) to low priced but terribly built items (screwdriver that barely holds it's shape and is thus useless). This experience left me wanting a more personal experience, one where I can tell someone what I need to do and they can use their expertise to help me get just what I need and at a reasonable price. I found that experience at Johnny's DIY. I have had much more DIY success since buying from them because they actually know what i need the tools for and give me honest advice to help me. I cannot suggest strongly enough that you visit Johnny's DIY for your next home improvement project.

Every time I've gone into the store the sales people act as if I'm bothering them, rather than a customer. If I ask a question they act as if answering is a massive inconvenience. They always seem to have brooms and stuff like that, but never things I actually need. So, as far as hardware stores go, this one is seriously lacking. But if you need dirt for potting plants or things to sweep the dirt up, I'm sure they'll have it.
