We stopped off at the Crown Inn yesterday for a Sunday roast. At 1pm the restaurant was fairly empty. Not a good sign, but as there were signs sayng it was under new management we thought that maybe it hadn't got going yet. There were only a few choices on the menu, but we took this as a good sign and were hopeful it meant they were aiming for quality and sticking to a few freshly prepared dishes rather than churning out tons of processed meals. We both chose the roast beef dinner pretty expensive at £9.75, but we naively thought this must mean it was really good.
We started getting worred when we were asked if we wanted mustard and horseradish (we did) and were brought over some sachets of sauce and a salt and pepper in the plastic packaging like you get it in the supermarket. 1 out of 10 for presentation! The food arrived, and the beef and gravy were lovely. The veg however consisted of frozen peas and frozen baby carrots, and some mushrooms swimming in olive oil. The potatoes were diced new potatoes, and tasted of nothing but olive oil. The portion size was a bit on the small side. they hadn't skimpted on the meat, but we'd have like more veg (and some fresh veg too). With a roast dinner I don't expect mushrooms, I'd like cabbage and maybe some parsnips. I also expect proper roast potatoes or even some mash. It seemed to us that the chef wasn't sure if he was cooking a roast dinner or a steak dinner.
Most disappointing. We were both still hungry, but as we'd already spent £22 on a most unsatistfactory meal we were loathe to spend another £4 each for a dessert, so we went elsewhere to have a coffee and cake instead.
We won't be going back. read more
