The food was good (though the salad husband got was a bit on the small side - when they said starter portion, they really meant it). The pub wasn't busy, but the atmosphere is good - wood floors, old style decor, comfortable chairs along with some stools and pews - and some odd pews that are also stools. The chap behind the bar was very friendly, even noting that we were on a time limit and moving accordingly. The place was spotless (I noted extremely clean windows) and the toilets clean and comfortable. I was especially amused by the little sign asking 'are you sitting comfortably' and then suggesting you apply for a job. They have a number of special offers. There is a garden and terrace outside, though it was too cold for us to sit there. The view over the canal was very pleasant. Beer and food are reasonably priced - the beer we had was £2.75 a pint, and the food priced between £5.00 for starter portions and £10 - £12. There is also an extensive wine list. There is a large car park. This is a good pub - shame I don't live close enough to visit more often.

Five stars to this lush place. Arrived here on a Sunday afternoon for a friends birthday…read morecelebration where we had a table booked in the restaurant. We arrived early and as the sun was shining we decided to have a few pre lunch drinks out on the decking. A great opportunity to soak up the October sunshine :) A waiter came out to tell us our table was ready but didn't rush us at all. We were seated at a table at the back of the restaurant, which meant we had a good view of the restaurant. Our Irish waiter looked after us brilliantly ensuring we had everything we needed and offering us more drinks. We all decided to order starters - I had the venison which was delightful. Considering I never had it before I loved it. I then settled on a vegetarian dish of feta cheese, spinach and butternut squash cannelloni. It arriving steaming hot with slices of garlic bread. Very tasty and cheesy! The other parties in the group ordered roast for two - a huge wooden board arrived with meat, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, vegetables, crackling and gravy. There was compliments to the chef all round for those! We then moved to the bar area after settling the bill to continue with the drinking and had dessert. My white chocolate bread and butter pudding was was divine and very filling. The staff are a credit to this restaurant and bar really making sure they look after their customers. The decor is warm, cosy and modern too. They also have a beer garden too which is lovely on a Summers day.

The Ales are - well - if you are german - and from Bavaria / Franconia the beer is the only point you can criticise here (no foam and too warm... but hey). It was Winter - so we didn't have the idea to look behind the house where I recognised later that there must be something like a small beer garden. Anyhow. The Cape of Good Hope is the place I want to be again. Waiters/Waitress - friendly and nice - even to a hun. Food - great dishes. After a long train ride from London my party of 4 was absolutely starving! So starving that we…read morecouldn't help, but attack the bread the waitress brought to our table as soon as we were seated at Rose and Crown. Boy, that was good bread. For my meal I ordered the goat cheese sandwich, which came with a tomato, red pepper, and parsnip soup. The soup did the trick of warming me up right away! The goat cheese sandwich was just OK. I never thought I'd say this since I absolutely love goat cheese, but they overdid it on the cheese a bit. I think they used 10 goats to make this one sandwich. Someone else at the table was smart enough to order a side of fries (umm, I mean chips) so I put my sandwich aside and ate those instead. Others at the table munched on ravioli, ceasar salad, and mushroom risotto. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. I also liked that their coffee came with lots of sugar cubes (I ate 3 just on their own!) and smarties (one of my favorite candies). They may not know how to make a goat cheese sandwich at Rose & Crown, but they sure know how to serve a good cup of coffee!

Reasonable local ale for just £4.10 each. Shared the £7.50 Camembert with croute toast as an appetizer. It didn't last very long. Loved the Deli Plates tapas-style tasting menu concept. If I ever open a restaurant, I'm totally ripping off that idea! Loved the Poached Salmon with arugula and the Smoked Mackerel Pate. Nice ales and reasonable wine prices. Very pleasant and personable table service.

The unassuming sign outside this pub says it all: "Home of…read morethe Pies" and "Pub/dining canalside gardens" We were lucky to find a table for 4 without a reservation on this Saturday afternoon, and despite the many other alternatives on the menu, we all ordered pies--2 vegetarian (wild mushroom, asparagus and shallot), and 2 steak and kidney. There was another good looking vegetarian pie option too (goat cheese and sweet potato), and plenty of other meat choices including venison as well as the usual non-pie pub offerings. We were all pleased with our choices, which came with gravy, thick hand cut fries and steamed mixed veg. The atmosphere is lovely with three intimate rooms, each with a fireplace and bar, but I'd almost say the highlight is the fact that you can leave your car in the parking lot and walk along the canal for miles if you desire. More sedentary folks could sit by the canal in the beer garden while their kids play in the attached playground, so there's something for everyone!

I had a chicken tikka salad sandwich and some breaded mushrooms. The sandwich ended up being tiny pieces of seasoned chicken on a piece of lettuce between two of the thickest pieces of bread - 2X Texas Toast size. It was not a chicken salad at all as advertised. It was very dry. As for everybody else's meals it was a consensus of MEH.... Average. The service brought it down another notch. We actually thought we could dine and dash but we really really could have dined and strolled. (Of course we did not!). Once our food arrived we were never checked on again. We had to get up and ask for our bill and then get up and pay. We will definitely not make the drive out to the Fleur de Lys again.
