Usually BW properties are pretty predictable but every now and then you run into a motel like this one that really isn't very good. It's an old building with paper thin walls and ceilings so you can forget about getting a decent night's sleep here. And you definitely don't want to be on the first floor. The people upstairs had several poorly mannered children who jumped up and down non-stop for several hours....and then were up at 05:00 stomping around. The wifi didn't work and they weren't especially engaged or interested in helping to get it working. I wasted 45 minutes of my life that I'll never get back standing in the lobby "waiting for my turn" in this woefully inadequately staffed business. I finally gave up. B'fast was pretty bad. Scrambled eggs and bacon but the bins were already empty by 6:45 so all we got was toast and coffee. BW has a policy of upgrading diamond select customers and I was told that the hotel was only half occupied. The room we were given was pretty bad so clearly not an upgraded room. The Missus thought that being an old motel maybe all the rooms there were as crappy as the one we were given. I guess we will have to start doing more due diligence and start checking Yelp reviews before booking ..... BW is usually ok and sometimes they are outstanding. But this place...... not bad enough for a one star review but bad enough where we will never be returning.

Had a small kitchenette and Kerig (much appreciated). Window overlooking the creek and as temp was cool enough we left it open all night to listen to the creek. Rochelle was so pleasant to deal with, her kids help out, there is a little pool that I didn't have time to use, the room was clean and spacious and they are pet friendly. Toilets were small and low to the floor, not ideal if you're over 6 feet tall. At least got our squats in! Bed was hard and uncomfortable. She then patiently showed her how to handle our paperwork for a later check in. Good instructor. We had arrived several hours early so our room was not yet ready. Since we were on a 7 week, around the country, motorcycle trip, our bikes were loaded up. We asked if we could have our bags in a secured. She had us load up a cart and placed our luggage in her office. When we returned several hours later, we were already checked in and the luggage cart was already in our room. Definitely above and beyond service. The hotel itself could use a little updating but was very clean and neat. We are booked here for 4 days and are comfortable with the knowledge that the stay will be a pleasant one.

We booked a room for our anniversary through a reservations service ( to be reviewed shortly). I…read morespecifically requested the Potato Creek Suite since it was our 30th anniversary and we were looking for a special experience. We were assured that we had that suite. When we arrived we discovered that the service had mis-booked our request and the lodge would not honor that room . Instead, they put us in one of their standard rooms. Since this was not satisfactory, we requested a refund. The lodge informed us that there was nothing that they could do and that we needed to reach out to the reservations service. We did this and they agreed to refund the money and sent us an email to that effect. We shared that email with the person working the desk and he agreed, cancelled our reservation, and returned our pet deposit. We found other accommodations. Today, two days later, we received an email from the reservation's service stating that the lodge had decided not to cancel this reservation so they were required to send the money to the lodge and could not credit my card. As a result, the Spearfish Canyon Lodge received $519.57 of my money after they had cancelled our reservation and we had left the hotel. My suggestion is that no one should book either this hotel. They will gladly send you sway and then later inform you that they intend to keep your fees if I could have, I would give them zero stars but, unfortunately, one is the least that I could do.

The coffee servers were too small, as our server could not keep up with the demand, even with six pots in rotation. The service starts a bit late (6:30) and was well maintained for the time we were there. Parking is plentiful, and the Deadwood Trolly stops at the door!
