I was quite impressed with the deli, and the hamburger, deli turkey and store made potato salad I bought was excellent! And the produce looked very fresh as well. One negative, however... I am 66 years old and often have a need for a rest room, due to a medical condition. When I inquired where it was the young cashier told me, politely, "It's not open to the public at this time." I know. Coronavirus. Pandemic. Gotta be careful. But come on... would it be better to soil myself in the middle of the store? ...So I had no choice but to leave with only half the items I needed. Luckly, I go to that branch often and they know me so I didn't need my ID to take some cash out. I went back to the store to pay for the groceries and when they run them up, I was $7.00 short. The young gentleman at the register took out his wallet and pulled out the $7.00 to pay the balance. I told I could just put a couple things back but he insisted so I let him. When I go back tomorrow, I am dropping off an envelope for him with a thank you note and the money to pay him back. This was completely unexpected so I felt I wanted to acknowledge his thoughtfulness. Thank you.

An automatic answer is that phone orders take 45 minutes. In person orders average 30 - 40 minutes. On top of it they are miserable. More than once I have seen customers complain. Nothing changes.

I asked the nice cashier about it and she confided it's wisest for her not to comment on masks given some people who come would not take it well--and I knew precisely what she meant. Some pretty motley looking folks seem to frequent Jake's. A red-faced swaggery customer behind me--not wearing a mask--overheard me ask about masks in the store, and he starting taunting me for the type of mask I was wearing. I decided I didn't want to be anywhere near someone like that, or be in that store, so I left. Other than this clear problem with masks and sometimes quite seedy looking people working in the store (not the female cashiers who are nice and seem pretty normal) and sometimes pretty creepy looking folks hanging around the parking lot, Jake's has really good coffee, an interesting and wide variety of foods, and their homemade sandwiches tend to be delicious. You can also get Vermont made ice cream and home-baked dog biscuits, and other assorted things. When I got back to my parents' house I mentioned what happened.
