I've done some…read morechurch-shopping since I've relocated to Staten Island, and I haven't found any house of worship which even vaguely resembles First Bible. This is-per the name-a Bible-believing, Reformed, sola scriptura, sola fide, non-denominational church where Jesus and his word comes first. Even though this is not what I would describe as a "seeker sensitive" church, people who aren't believers will be welcomed and treated with dignity and warmth. Those who are believers will be welcomed as brethren. But no one will be coddled. Pastor Veach, Pastor Dean, and all of the elders at First Bible are performing a much-needed ministry. They are an integral part of the Staten Island community-through Operation Jerusalem and ministries to local nursing homes-and the wider global community, from Haiti, to Poland, to France and the Philippines and beyond. I've been at services where newborn believers from China have given their testimony. First Bible really is a light unto the world. I'd encourage anyone who lives in Staten Island, or New York City, to see the good works they are doing for yourself.

No additions or subtractions, just the words from your Bible. I personally found the format of the mass to be very…read moresimilar to a Catholic mass with a major exception - During the peace offering, everyone walks around the church to offer each other peace. The priests actually come down from the alter and go row by row to offer peace to everyone and greet everyone. I never experienced this until I came to this church. A very family-oriented church and they offer Sunday school for the kids while the parents attend mass. They also have a coffee hour after mass so you can mingle with other parishoners and I loved how nobody pressures you to join the church. It was a great opportunity to meet new people.

I was 6 years old. Just a small synopsis; I am trying to find once again; the names of the nuns who took great care of me, even to the extent of combing my hair, helping me with my galoshes and all things I needed to feel welcome away from home. I do remember sister Miriam Louise. She was the schools principal. Also, I was taught to put out the candles in the smaller Church. Our class attended the Sunday mass as a group. Nuns took attendance. I became an alter boy. Dominus Vobiscum. I felt both needed and wanted. Allow me to brag a tiny bit. I was " head of my class for the 7 and one half years. David Cassato is the Head Pastor and he is as good as it gets when it comes to priests. Msgr. brought the church out of near despair in 2002. In church there is Italian mass said downstairs and English and Spanish masses upstairs. Msgr. Cassato gives the most Amazing sermons and I have always looked to them. They have A beautiful choir and the music it beautiful. My children have always gone to Roman Catholic school but they have made there sacraments at St. Athanasius. The church is so clean and the staff are kind and knowledgeable. All are Welcome and children are always able to Alter serve. At Easter the children can bring their Easter baskets to get blessed.
