This review is based on my experience with Solcana both before, during, and after the state-wide…read moreCOVID shutdown. I'll leave the obligatory note that COVID is still a real threat to everyone's health, and I am glad Solcana is one of the businesses in Minneapolis that is truly taking it seriously. I've been a member of Solcana for nearly a year, and before COVID, the gym itself operated much like many crossfit gyms, with lots of classes, good equipment, and a friendly atmosphere. There has always been a strong focus here on equity and equality (at least as long as we have been members), and that's one of the main reasons why we chose to join. That focus has only become stronger over the past year, and I will touch on it a bit later. When COVID came around, Solcana, like all other gyms, shut down. I have to hand it to them though, they really tried hard to keep delivering a quality product to members, mostly through online classes. After the state started allowing gyms to open up on a limited basis, outdoor barbell classes began again. I've observed quite a few post-covid outdoor classes run by other gyms (whether out on a bike ride or in the park by my house), and many of them have seemed to completely ignore social distancing guidelines. Solcana has been completely different; all of the outdoor classes have felt really safe, with specific areas marked out for every athlete, small class sizes, and strict cleaning practices. This week, we were allowed to go back inside. However, that didn't mean Solcana relaxed their commitment to safety...if anything, they strengthened it. Indoor classes are even smaller, the distance between athletes has grown, masks are mandatory all of the time, and they are making sure everything is cleaned between classes (and there's at least an hour between classes). There are also still outdoor classes, depending on what type of workout you want and how safe you feel indoors. Even with all the new safety practices, the programming has been great, and we feel like we are getting a lot out of our membership, despite not being able to go as much as we were able to before (due to smaller class sizes and fewer classes, there is now a limit on classes per month, but that's completely understandable). Back to social justice...in the wake of the tragedy surrounding George Floyd, Solcana made an even stronger commitment to promoting equity and equality for all, and that's included doing even more with the BLM movement. The gym as de-affiliated from crossfit because of their comments/positions following the tragedy, but aside from not using that name any more (or giving them any money), the programming is pretty much exactly what you would expect from that type of gym. You will also find that this gym is extremely welcoming of all athletes, no matter who you are, what you look like, or how you identify, a trait not all CF gyms share. All in all, this is a wonderful, welcoming fitness community that promotes social justice AND takes COVID very seriously. The owner herself told me that she wants to be the safest gym in the Twin Cities, and so far, it seems they are succeeding.

I love it and I could go on and on about Hotworx! Hotworx is very different from every other gym because all of the workouts are in saunas. It's intensely hot and you're supposed to work out! I do it five times a week, so I assure you, it can be done. Because the sessions are in saunas set to around 125F, they are shorter than they would be otherwise. It really is more workout in less time. Each sauna has a video screen with virtual instructors leading you through the session. Some of them are isometric workouts like yoga & pilates, and some of them have actual cardio equipment like bike machines. There is also a traditional weight-training room with plenty of gear (that area is room-temperature, thank goodness). The owners and the staff understand that it's a new experience for most people, so they''re available to answer questions and it's easy to arrange a free workout to see what it's about. I definitely recommend giving it a try! It's a lot cheaper than the big premium gyms and it definitely works. Despite whoat a heavy workout it can be, this is the only gym routine I've ever stuck with. I never make excuses not to come in because I genuinely want to come in.

My happy place! I…read morejoined CrossFit Slipstream after a sports related injury and 25lb weight gain. I was not happy with myself and needed a positive change. Both Susan and John are so friendly and welcoming, they have never failed to greet anyone that walks in the door with a huge smile and a cheerful hello. Super positive atmosphere and Coach John is extremely knowledgeable, conscientious and supportive! This box is multi-dimensional, it's not just a workout, it's a total body transformation! John and Susan partner with other organizations to offer nutritional seminars, functional movement clinics and running clinics, just to name a few. Shortly after joining, I participated in a nutritional wellness program, Nourish RX, offered by Grand Health Chiropractic and Wellness Center in partnership with CrossFit Slipstream. So, not only was I getting a monster workout but also learning to properly fuel my body. In a little over 4 months, I have lost over 20 lbs and feel like a new person. I sleep better, look better and most importantly, feel better - physically and mentally. I leave CrossFit Slipstream with a smile every time and cannot wait to go back for more! Come join in the fun, you won't regret it!

Here's why: -Coach John set me up for success. He pushed me to work hard, but never asked me to do anything dangerous or inappropriate for my skill level. His expertise seems to be a bottomless pit. I trust him to communicate with clarity and respect. -On Ramp was good value for my money. The price seemed steep at first, but the amount of quality personalized instruction I got was worth way more than I paid. Had I spent the same amount on a personal trainer at my neighborhood gym, it would have been far less instruction time. -They welcomed me like a friend. The staff takes a personal interest in all members and guests. They introduce members to each other. They ask for feedback. Nobody is just a customer. -The crowd is genuinely supportive and unpretentious. You will not find any walking CrossFit stereotypes here. No preening, judgmental, meatheaded cartoons either. -I am definitely getting stronger. And yes, I know it is not unusual to get good results when you change things up and get some coaching, regardless of your fitness program. But why not do this in a reliably positive environment if you can? -The women's locker room is terrific. Spotlessly clean, minimalist and airy, lighting good enough for subtle makeup application...this makes it so much better than many cluttered and so-called luxurious locker rooms I have used. For serious, come give CrossFit Slipstream a try. It's likely you will know if it is right for you before your introductory session is over, and you will get a safe workout customized to your fitness and skill level.

Like many people, I had put on more than a few extra pounds and was pretty unhappy with how I looked and felt. Before coming to Basecamp fitness I had pretty much no experience with group fitness classes, strength training, and was a novice at anything and everything. I didn't even know how to do a burpee! The Basecamp instructors including Zak, helped create a safe, judgment free zone, that I wasn't expecting, while teaching me proper form and technique. These 35 minute classes, with a 10 minute core block are fast paced, fun, and are over before you know it! My favorite days are lower body day (Tuesday/Friday) and full body day (Wednesday/Saturday). More than 2 years later, and over 400 classes, I couldn't be happier with my progress. A huge thank you to the Basecamp instructors, front desk, and manager for your continuous help and support. I couldn't have done this without you. I'm proud to be a part of the Basecamp community! Tips for newcomers- Stick with it! If you need help, just ask! The workouts always left me feeling a bit sore so I knew it was definitely effective and working. I don't know why they keep hyping the 35 min workout, because that is the main workout but then there is another 10ish mins of abs at the end so the workout is really 45 mins. The instructors were great! The music was always off the charts! I had a absolute blast. They even give out validated parking which is amazing and such a great perk that they really need to hype up to perspectives. The reason I didn't join is the cost is so much higher than other gyms/boutique gyms that they priced themselves out I just could not bring myself to pull the trigger, if it was a little more reasonable, I would definitely find myself going for it but it is incredibly high that they priced themselves out of my consideration, which is a bummer because I really enjoyed it.
