I was a member of CrossFit Shatter in 2024. There are two bathrooms inside the facility. One is intended for women, and the other for men. Whomever is using it, male or female, standard protocol is to lock the doors when in use at a public facility. Let me take you on a story which includes a gym member named "Creeper" by other gym goers and a management who has failed to protect their female customer base. This story will leave you disappointed whether you have a daughter, sister, wife, or mother. Often times woman battle to be heard or taken seriously when they voice up. They are not believed, or their complaints are viewed as "just complaining", or "they take things too personally." I am voicing up about this to protect the next woman-these predators start out as exposing themselves, and then evolve into physically touching. I attend an evening gym session at Crossfit Shatter. Before the actual group workout, I decide to use the restroom. Upon arriving, the women's restroom door was unlocked and I entered. I observed a young male squatting on top of the toilet with no pants on, exposing his genitals and conveniently facing the door-as if waiting for someone to enter. It was clear he was an "exhibitionist", and waiting for his next female victim. The members were on to something. This was the person they labeled "Creeper". After leaving the facility and calling the location's manager, it was clear he did not deem this situation as alarming. He questioned whether it was even a crime and relayed he cared about the gym's reputation. Most concerning is being told this individual was kicked out from his previous gym. When I realized nothing was going to be done to address this issue, and protect other female members, I asked for my membership to be revoked. It was granted without penalty. I asked other female gym members if they experienced anything with "Creeper". Two of them stated yes. During those incidents he was in the bathroom with the light off, door slightly ajar and he had no shirt on. As if he was testing the waters. Placing a label "Women", "Men" above the bathroom doors does not solve the problem. The bigger issue here is not respecting women and not stopping the victimization. read more

I've put off writing a review for too long... I think one reason why is because I have so many feelings about this place... Crossfit Shatter has been the catalyst for one of the most amazing life changes I've ever committed to - making myself and my health a priority in a way that honors health, fitness, and community above just a number on the scale. I started attending Crossfit Shatter last fall, but I made a commitment to regular attendance in January (I can confirm, you get out of crossfit what you put into it). I am so much stronger, healthier, and happier than I was just one year ago. I look forward to going to the gym every time I go and that can be attributed to the great people who teach and attend classes at Shatter. Shane and Lucille have built a gym and a community that is unlike any other. I love going to class. I always sweat, am challenged to improve and constantly amaze myself. I'm doing things I never thought possible. Shatter is now not just "the gym" - it is the place I go to work out aggression after a tough day at the office, it is a place I go to see friends, and it is a place I feel powerful and optimistic about my health and my future. People reading this may think I don't have anything to compare Shatter to, which would be incorrect. I've visited 3 other gyms and, yes, overall crossfit consistently delivers on community, training and support. However, Shatter takes that community and combines it with outstanding technical training, forward thinking programming taking into account athlete weaknesses and strengths, and supportive tight-knit community combined with humor, making Shatter truly something special. Crossfit is difficult no matter what gym you belong to. Stick with it. The way you will grow, learn and develop (at any age or skill level) to become an athelete will amaze you. CrossFit Shatter is now my 58th CrossFit gym (or box for those who are familiar with the lingo) and let me know it's one of my favorites. First of all the trainers are great. They give correction and are enthusiastic without being pushy or in your face. The community is embracing and welcoming. The gym is not even a year old so the equipment is great, lots of space to work out and not feel cramped even when the classes are pretty packed, and they have a separate room for mobility/strength so if you come early or want to stay a little later, you can have your own little private gym to work on stretching or extra credit. Shane, the owner, is still constantly making things better, I hear talk of his mom wanting to put in a little kitchen for making shakes and paleo treats, a CrossFit kids program is in the works, great stuff for one of Albany's newest boxes. I can't wait to come back and train here again (I was only visiting for a week) but enjoyed every WOD with these guys. Keep up the great work! read more

Shatter is now the fourth CrossFit in which I've been a member, and though I haven't been going there long enough to say it's my favorite (yet), it reminds me SO MUCH of my favorite one, which is Railroad CrossFit in Hudson. It's definitely a small place in an obscure location. Sometimes it seems too small, but if the class is large, Shane, the owner and head coach, comes up with a way to make things comfortable for everyone. Speaking of Shane, he's great. He has SO MUCH energy and, simply put, wants everyone to be their best and to get strong and to have fun. I joined Shatter when I was recovering from a back injury, and still every time I'm there, he asks me how my back is feeling, and he puts so much effort in to make sure I don't reinjure myself. He also does his own progamming, which I greatly appreciate, I think it's fun. The other coaches at Shatter are also great. They all have different styles of coaching, but they're all very effective and just want people to be healthy and strong, and they're good people too! Gotta love that! The community feel at Shatter is great, too, people are friendly and encouraging. I haven't looked into all of the CrossFits in the area, but I do know that the prices at Shatter are very fair (as far as CrossFit is concerned anyway) and I think they're the cheapest in the area. And there are different options - you can choose a membership that's three times a week, four times a week, or unlimited. Definitely worth the money, in my opinion. Bonus points because it's dog friendly! Somehow seeing a dog during a crappy WOD makes the WOD less shitty :) read more

I have been very actively working out, lifting weights, and doing different forms of cardio for a few years, and had the itch to get into CrossFit for a while. To be honest, what initially drew me to check out Shatter was a living social deal they had at the time for the 101 course plus 1 month of unlimited training. They also are very competitively priced compared to most other area boxes. CrossFit in general is not cheap..but they also have several options in terms of monthly pricing so that's awesome as well. As I mentioned, I have been working out on my own for a while, but the 101 courses really helped me better understand some of the Olympic lifts I was inexperienced in (clean, snatch, jerk, etc.). Coach Lucille was super accommodating to everyone's schedules, since this course happened to be around the holidays. She and the rest of the coaching staff and members were also very welcoming, which is important, since trying something new can be intimidating to anyone. After completing the 101 course, we were thrown right into the workouts, which are all scaled to your abilities. There are different levels in terms of weights, box jump height, pull ups, etc., so there is never an instance where you are standing around doing nothing. Every workout is comprised of a dynamic warmup of some sort, strength training, and a WOD (workout of the day). The strength differs each day, could be trying to find your 1RM back squat, or doing 70% of your push press for maximum effort (until failure). The owner and head coach Shane is very knowledgeable and encouraging, and genuinely wants to see his members succeed. He is able to see how difficult it is for you to do 3 reps of a particular lift, and can pretty accurately tell you what your 1 RM will be. After every single workout, you can find pretty much everyone sprawled out on the floor, or curled up in the fetal position (jk jk), but the workouts definitely kick your ass, in a good way! Overall, my experience has been nothing short of amazing. I genuinely look forward to each and every workout, and have already seen major improvements in form, weight, and endurance in a short time frame. read more

I can't say enough great things about the people here, the programming and the coaches. Shane and Lucille are constantly looking for ways to improve the atmosphere/space and they are great people to get to know. I was never considered an "athlete" in school, but now I'm lifting weights I never imagined I could lift at 17 years old. Crossfit Shatter has not only made me stronger, but made me more confident. The coaches here have taught me to take pride in what I can do and to not dwell on what I cannot. If you're on the fence about joining, I strongly suggest you do, you won't regret it. read more

I'm visiting from crossfit NYC and was extremely happy to dropped into Crossfit Shatter. The gym is 5,400SF which is huge and has all the toys and equipment like ropes, rings, rig, etc. they also hold strongman workouts like tire flips, stones, sleds, etc. the floor is well rubber padded and a lot of bars, boxes, to go around for their classes. On the hot day I dropped in, they opened the large doors letting an entire side of the gym open for the breeze- which was awesome. Shane is the owner and was super cool to talk with. He's got a gritty coach voice and built like a tank so he definitely knows what he's doing. Several gym regulars attended and were so friendly to welcome new visitors. Shane is also the only gym partnering with a local food cafe for discounts as this is the regionals competition weekend. His gym also offers BBQ cookouts after the weekend classes which is the coolest way to build community. My favorite part of this WOD was Shane encouraging us to go heavy with form, and feel free to drop the weight from the top. That is the most satisfying feeling to drop it like a Boss! read more

Amazing place and people. Awesome crossfit experience! My husband and I dropped in at crossfit shatter for the whole weekend and we had the best experience ever! Here are some of the highlights of this gym - 1. People here are super friendly - we feel so welcomed right after we stepped into the gym. Everyone here is very bubbly and energetic. They push you and cheers you up during the workout. 2. Shane, the head instructor, is super professional and personal at the same time. He observes carefully during the class and made sure people workout safely and push them harder. 3. I've been working out here on a weekly basis since Nov '15 and it's been the first and only place to keep me excited about fitness for this long, consistently. I was in Albany for a few days and dropped into CrossFit Shatter for two noon sessions. Lance (#2) the noontime coach was awesome and helped me with form points throughout, even though I was not a regular. Great coach. Everyone was very welcoming and the WODs were awesome. The box itself has just the right amount of grit, sweat, and good vibes to inspire and get anyone motivated. I joined CrossFit to take advantage of the living social deal which was two months of CrossFit at a discount. I did six classes of the 101 training, which instructed you on all of the CrossFit exercises such as 5 different cleans, snatch, squats, deadlifts, box jumps, pull ups, push-ups etc. I worked out for years as an avid swimmer, golfer and tennis player. My training consisted of mostly cardio. I rarely lifted weights. This is been an challenge for me as I've had to learn basically everything from scratch. I'm going to the gym 4 times a week, learning proper form and getting stronger and leaner. Shane the owner and head coach is amazing! He is welcoming, motivating and sincere. Fantastic facility. All of the coaches are incredibly helpful, family type atmosphere. The athletes are a wide range and you can always find someone similar to your skill level to work with. Do you have reservations about joining CrossFit? Are you intimidated by the rumors of a cult-like atmosphere? This may be the case at other gyms, but not CrossFit Shatter, and if it is a cult (let's face it, it is kind of a cult), it is a cult you want to join. I have been doing CrossFit for over two years and have been a member at Shatter for about a year, and I feel a void in my life on the days that I cannot make it into the gym (and I used to DREAD working out before Shatter!) The classes not only teach you what you need to know, but everyone's positive attitude helps you feel at ease. The community is tremendous as Shatter's members come from all walks of life. Everyone is very friendly and no one judges based on what level you may be starting, as everyone was once in your position. The trainers and the owner, Shane, are exceptionally welcoming and enthusiastic (which is not always the case with some CrossFit gyms/boxes) and always make sure you are nailing technique before you embark on a new activity. You will never be forced to do something of which you are not physically capable, but they will push you to your limits to prove that you are capable of more than you realize. You will do things you have never done before, and you will not find a better workout anywhere else. If you stick with it, you will love the results. read more
