Back in 2019 I walked into CrossFit Santa Barbara and been there ever since. The head coach at the time welcomed me in and I started my CrossFit experience. Since then the gym has gone through several moves and an ownership change but I've stuck with them. Why do you ask? The current owners, much like the past, and coaching staff have put an emphasis on developing proficient technique in all areas of CrossFit programming to ensure the best experience for each member. In every class each member gets attention needed even in group settings. CFSB also offers a Sunday skills class so members can work on specific skills needed to progress in the level of CrossFit they choose to pursue. Personally, CFSB has helped me develop into a better athlete and helped prepare me to compete in Spartan Races throughout the last couple of years. This includes the 2021 Spartan Stadium Series. If you're new to CrossFit, CFSB offers a foundations training program to get you versed and familiar with the movements. If you've had CrossFit experience you can jump right in to classes. Not only does CFSB look to help the members in their pursuit of fitness but are involved in the local community with charity fundraising events. CrossFit Santa Barbara is by far the best facility I have trained at, from the coaching staff to the community of members and atmosphere this place is top notch. This box has produced a games athlete, regional athlete as well as athletes that compete in local events. Many members also use the CFSB programming for general fitness as well. The disclaimer to all of this is that since starting up at CFSB, I have also gone and taken my L-1 and become a coach as well and continued my growth as a strength coach. That being said, I guarantee the owners and staff will do our best to give you the best CrossFit experience you can have each and everyday. Fun programming with an interval workout followed by a nice shoulder pump session with a new movement I had never used before. Beautiful views of the mountains and a really great experience. I've only been to CFSB two times while on a weekend trip and I'll go back next time I need a workout and I'm up that way. The gym is outside. That's pretty awesome. Granted, the two times I've worked out here, the weather has been perfect. This last weekend, our warmup jog took us down by the ocean and then I did kettlebell swings while looking at the mountains. Yeah, that's pretty sweet. I haven't really needed much instruction/coaching for the bodyweight movements that CFSB (and most other CF boxes do for free workouts) but the coaches seem to know what they're talking about. They give constructive criticism to those that need it and are quite helpful. The others in the class are helpful and supportive. I like CFSB and will be visiting them when I'm up in Santa Barbara. When I first moved to SB, I was on a mission to discover as many workouts and free trials as possible which is how I stumbled upon CF. Every sat they do a free trial class (for the first 3 classes) and I was hooked! Basically, for 20 minutes, you try to kill yourself (in a good way!). The workouts are always intense, fun, and SUPER strength building. I think my favorite aspect is that everyone is super motivating. Not only is Tyler super helpful in showing you how to properly do the movements, but he and everyone else encourages each-other. People who I had never met were yelling "Good job Stacy - Keep it up!". CF always pushes me to a new limit and keeps me sore for days. Love it. read more

I've been a member of the CrossFit community since 2012 and in the past few months have had the privilege to travel and drop in at various boxes along the way. I felt the need to leave a review for CrossFit Santa Barbara...so hopefully that tells you something! I was fortunate enough to work out with Coach Casey and other SB members and it was probably one of my favorite drop-in visits. Coach Casey was very attentive to every single member and visitor (I wasn't the only one!) during skill work, while addressing the different levels that we were all at. It was impressive how detailed he was and his comments were very much appreciated. Everyone was friendly, welcoming and the box generally just had an awesome vibe. Every box is a little different and may not appeal to a certain population. I, for one, would love to come back and visit here. P.S. I'm so stoked to have met Tyler and finally learned what crossfit is all about firsthand. If you know about, do, or have talked fitness minded folk who do not do crossfit, you're likely to hear all kinds of different perspectives - positive, negative, complete shite or otherwise. From my perspective, it's this type of workout that requires you to stay sharp mentally and physically for duration of the work out. I haven't done any other workout that's increased my strength and balance across a wider range of motion as quickly as Crossfit SB has. I also really appreciate the fact that I wasn't even allowed to participate in regular classes until I had completed a number of personal training sessions where the emphasis was on doing everything you can to achieve perfect form and technique in your movements. And even if you have trouble with a given motion or workout, there is always a modification that can be made. This should be the approach for ANY new form of exercise. There is a high level of motivation but an even higher level of emphasis on not getting lazy with your form during the intense workouts. I love the format of a warm-up, a lifting skill and then the WOD. The result is likely the most efficient way to get as complete an intense, full-body workout as you do with Crossfit SB. And like anything in life, your results are ultimately up to you, but this crew is there to make sure you have the information and support you need to get there. So get there. read more

We got a chance to drop in on CFSB during our vacation. My wife and I new to CF but our travel mates own an affiliate. CFSB had plenty of equipment, and facility is unassuming and rugged. We did our WOD under the sky, and it is a perfect atmosphere for working out. The coach took plenty of time to make sure I had the technique and correct form on ALL moves. .. being a stranger in a gym is tough and he made us feel instantly welcome. The other CF'ers at the gym were easy going and welcoming.. I'll be back the next time we go to SB. I'd suggest this box for anyone thinking about trying CF but might be nervous about being new to a gym. read more

I was lucky enough to spend four weeks in Santa Barbara this summer, and I used my vacation time to start getting into shape. I looked at a lot of different programs, but when I met Tyler at CrossFit Santa Barbara I knew this was the place for me. Tyler is an amazing individual and a great coach. Dropped in for a week, my first day was on a (Saturday) when I came in was meet with friendly staff. Everyone introducing themselves to me, making me feel as if I was at my regular gym. During the classes the coaches will stop you if they see you doing any movements wrong, adjust your posture to insure you will not hurt yourself. I would recommend anyone that wants a good workout with friendly people through out the gym to stop in, and I promise you will continue going as I did. read more

I've been Crossfitting for 2.5 years, and I travel a lot, so I have dropped into many different Crossfit boxes. Crossfit Santa Barbara was easily one of the nicest boxes I've visited. They've just relocated to a new location, and it's such a great space! As of right now, they're still putting in some finishing touches, but the equipment is all brand new! We were rowing on brand new Concept rowers, lifting with all new Rogue barbells and plates, squatting from new squat racks near their new rig. Seriously, it was nice. And the coaching was PHENOMENAL! Janyce was clearly very experienced and knowledgeable. She really emphasized proper form and lifting technique and gave great cues to help us tweak our lifts. Great programming, great workouts, awesome experience. This will for sure be our go to when we're in the area! read more

Tyler, Jeff, and the team at CrossFit in Santa Barbara are the best fitness professionals I've ever worked with. A Spectrum Fitness member for years, my endless hours on the elliptical machine did little to tone my body and I hated the gym because it was so boring. I was encouraged by a friend from work to attend a trial workout at CrossFit and I signed up for a punchcard as soon as I could -- I love the short, high-intensity format, the camaraderie and competition between members, and especially the attitude/personality of the CrossFit trainers -- highly disciplined, big muscled, fitness "meatheads" who don't take themselves too seriously and make you laugh (and maybe puke) during the hardest 20 minutes of your gym career. read more

My husband and I moved to SB seven months ago and after checking out all of the boxes in town, decided CFSB was the one for us. The coaches and members were so friendly and welcoming. The space is awesome (which is hard to find in a town with very limited and expensive real estate) and the equipment is all brand new. The pricing is fair and the programming has been great. CrossFit Santa Barbara is the best workout deal in SB. It's way cheaper than a personal trainer, and the results are just as good, if not better. I've tried every gym in SB and every workout plan you can think of, and CrossFit SB is the only one that I've been able to stick to for more than a couple of weeks. That not only says a lot about the program and the trainers (Tyler, Madeline, and Jeff are great), but of the other cross-fitters as well. Going to CrossFit SB is my favorite part of the day. Not only do I get a great workout, but I get to hang with really cool people who motivate and push me to be my best. There are many reasons why locals and visitors alike are leaving high marks and rave reviews for CrossFit Santa Barbara. I'll start with 3: Coaches Janyce, Casey, and Naomi (aka Coach Ninja). I'm sure the other coaches here are just as stellar (I think you kind of have to be to coach here), but these are the 3 I've worked with and they are amazing. They are extremely knowledgable and passionate. They truly want the best for their athletes and emphasize proper form above all else. And the box, fuhgetaboutit! The box is amazing! The equipment is new, the space is clean with a no-frills-get-after-it feel, and the Friday evening post-workout beers are cold. I could go on, I really could. I've been to many boxes over the years and I must say this is the best. They perfectly marry strength training and traditional crossfit training, which I found lacking at most other crossfit gyms. In a few short months their unique and purposeful programming has helped me make gains that were only possible at other boxes if I did weight training on the outside. Love all the coaches; most of their training tips can't be found online so really appreciate their insights. Love that they make available numerous classes for kids that run concurrently with the adult classes so I can be working out while the kids get their fitness on too. Also thank you coach Naomi for going out of your way to make a eight hour round trip journey to coach my kids at their first powerlifting meet down in San Diego; that sort of support from a crossfit box is priceless! read more

Very friendly people without big gym egos. The workouts are intense but totally scaled to your fitness level. They also have multiple payment options. I have worked out at every major gym in Santa Barbara and this place has given me the best workout and in turn the best results. Although it's more money than big gyms you get a lot of hands on training that would cost a lot in other gyms. read more

We stopped here on our way down the coast when we went to 5 CrossFits in one week! Must say, this was my fav! There was a great community feeling about this place; so many of the people had been at this gym for so long and you could tell they really loved this box! The free wod on Saturday morning was really cool, and I loved how they created a partner wod on the spot to pair all the newbies with someone who had been crossfitting for a longer period. I've been doing Crossfit for about four or five months, and it is by far the best workout I've ever done. I started working out there in preparation for fire academy, and it has definitely paid off. It's helped me to gain the strength and intensity I need to get up that drill tower in full turnouts. More than that, the people there are rad. I joined CrossFit Santa Barbara after several months of listening to my boyfriend try to convince me that I would really like it. I watched the videos and was immediately intimidated! Once I actually got the courage to attend a class I was hooked. The coaches helped me modify exercises that I couldn't do and worked very closely with me on learning the movements. I started out not being able to do more than three or four push-ups and not even one pull-up, now I can do workouts that require 50+ reps of each. This review will be solely on my opinion of the box itself and not of crossfit in general since obviously if you attend you're already sold on crossfit. The box itself is small and I think it may be limited to outdoor workouts, but the weather is great so I'm not complaining. I attended several classes here while working away from home. Very easy going only requested you give them some notice ahead of time to see if they have room. The coaches and athletes were very accepting and polite probably more so than my home box dare I say. I also appreciate what seems to be their custom programming. I am used to just performing "main site wods" so being able to come here and work a strength/skill portion as well as a metcon each workout was great. Had a great time and would recommend them to anyone. read more

I've been coming to CFSB for a little over two years now and I've loved every single day of it. The coaching staff is great, about 95% of the equipment is brand spanking new (barbells, rowers, weights, assault bikes, wall balls, etc.), and the community is awesome. The workouts keep you on your toes, and just when you think you've mastered something, the coaches hit you with a WOD that comes in and kicks your butt and puts you back in your place humbly. And that's what I love about crossfit. I'm constantly being challenged by the workouts and there's a positive sense of competition between all the members. Everyone pushes everyone else to do their absolute best, while still having a good time, not taking life or the workouts too too seriously. 10/10. I would recommend this BOX to anyone looking to start with crossfit, if you've been crossfitting for a while and are looking to keep making gains in SB, or if you're dropping in from out of town. And there's also the free community class on Saturday too. All in all, a great experience communally and physically read more

I have actually been a member at over 4 crossfit gyms in the last 4 years. Some great, some more mediocre - but all awesome in their own way. Crossfit Santa Barbara is one of the great ones. It has the laid back feel that won't make you feel guilty if you can't go 5 days a week - especially because its more affordable than any crossfit I've attended - but it has that competitive vibe that will drive you to crush yourself when you are there. Hands down the best facility I've ever used. A real emphasis on the fast and intense work outs. Tyler does a terrific job making you feel at home, and some of my best friends in Santa Barbara have come from the program. If you've come from another town and are used to crossfit - you owe it to yourself to try this gym. read more
