No treadmills, no fancy machines, no salesmen.. I mean "personal trainers." Basically, the way a fitness facility should be. If you're reading this, I'm sure you have a general idea of what Crossfit is at this point. So we don't need to go in to that detail. I'm sure you've also read all the horror stories online or from some know-it-all's blog about how terrible Crossfit is and how it promotes using poor form to get maximum reps and the fastest time. Turns out, Crossfit gyms can vary widely, and every gym (or Box, in Crossfit lingo) and all are run differently. This is the only of the half dozen or so Crossfit gyms I've been to that runs in an open-gym format. Most have a specific start time where everyone comes in, warms up, and starts the workout (or WOD, in that same Crossfit lingo) at the same time. The problem I've always had with that is that 1. I can't always make it exactly at that start time, and end up missing out, and 2. It spreads the trainers (or coaches... lingo) thin, making it harder for them to keep you doing things the correct way (which can be tough once you start getting fatigued). Having an attentive coach there to encourage you and work on your form in real time is priceless. The people who workout here are a great bunch, and have been welcome of me, despite my social awkwardness, and every other person whom I've seen come in, regardless of age, body type, or anything else. Unlike other gyms, both Crossfit and traditional, that I've been to, I've not witnessed nor experienced any negativity or judgment amongst the crowd. I truly positive environment all around. The facility is top notch, and definitely the best Crossfit facility I've worked out in.

Since then, they have followed him up to his new gym! I swung by a couple of Saturdays ago and did a 30 min workout here with the guys. I didn't know what to expect, especially since I have never been to a crossfit gym before. Our workout that morning was more conditioning exercises and I actually enjoyed it! We did the 9 AM workout with Coach Anna. I struggled with push presses and Joel and Anna were there to walk me through the movements when my form was not correct. Thank you! Cody was sore the following days and could barely lift his arms. I was decently sore as well. Meaning it was a great workout and it was only 30 min! It is a great space, very clean, and the coaches are very enthusiastic for you to be there! I'll definitely go by again when I am around on the weekends more!

Case in point, on day one the owner diagnose an issue that I was having with my form for one of the Olympic, weightlifting movements, which another gym in the areas coaches hadn't noticed for seven months, and had led to an injury. Day one Joe diagnosed the problem and it was fixed without me even asking! There are two sides of the gym, dedicated for electric weightlifting on one side, and the other side, high intensity, interval training. This shit is easily accessible, clean, and has easy parking. It is not a globo gym, nor is it simply an iron fitness. There is space for what you need if it's a casino workout, or you're dropping in for open gym or individual weightlifting session. Coaches run classes on time, one hour, which is not the experience that I have had other community style gyms in the past in the area. American flag over the door, attentive coaches and community, never asking for reviews online (a great plus!), accessible in ten minutes or less from JBLM, Lakewood, all the way up to Ruston. I live in Arizona but spend about 3 months out of the year in Lake Stevens. Every time I walk in the door I'm greeted with genuine smiles, happy to welcome me back (from both the staff and the members) My favorite thing about the Loop is the excellent coaching and explanation before a workout begins. They breakdown the moves we'll be doing so even a beginner can grasp the concept and not feel overwhelmed or discouraged because they don't fluently speak CrossFit. The workouts are designed to leave you feeling challenged and accomplished with both strength and cardio elements built in. I leave feeling strong and energized. If you're on the fence about visiting, don't be. Take the plunge, you won't regret it and you're guaranteed to leave better than you arrived.

My first encounter with SSP was a Saturday morning Metabolic Conditioning class. For someone who doesn't really know her way around weights & equipment and was def more out of shape than the other folks there, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Everyone was SO friendly and made me feel like I was joining a community as soon as I walked through the door. Throughout the entire hour, Ro led our class of about 10-15 people through a series of high-intensity interval training workouts and made sure we were all appropriately pushed to our limits. Every exercise was super form-focused and accessible to different skill levels and abilities. I may have felt like I needed to vom and/or pass out a couple of times but, more than anything, I was v proud of myself for challenging my body. Since that class, I have returned and worked out with a number of the other trainers (Meg, Ana, and Jay) who are all equally attentive, encouraging, and just the best. The exercises they prepare are always tough, fun, and never the same. I never thought I'd be one to use kettlebells, TRX, and battle ropes but here I am, getting a little stronger every time I go to SSP. I often think about how miserable I was with my virtually nonexistent exercise routine about a year ago and am so glad that I found this gym. SSP is helping me love and prioritize my fitness again and I couldn't be more grateful!
