GymBowie is tucked away close to residential neighborhoods in the Montrose area. It just opened in December and specializes in CrossFit, which is a strength and training program that is all the rage these days. The website is clean, well-designed, up-to-date, and very informative. The Facebook page provides statuses on weekly free introduction and yoga classes. I attended a free intro CrossFit class on a rainy Saturday morning. Bowie was very cheerful and made sure to introduce himself to all the newcomers. His positive energy was infectious and made me enthusiastic to start the workout. The gym is a "box" type building with one room containing all the equipment and space for the workouts. You go through the CrossFit workout sets in the group, and it's very encouraging to go through it together. Because, trust me, with these intensive workouts, you're gonna need all the encouragement you can get! Fortunately, as I lay dying in a the middle of a set of pushups, Bowie remembered my name and (again, cheerfully!) pushed me to keep going. I like that even though the exercises are tough, Bowie never resorts to the "bootcamp style" of yelling putdowns or using negative reinforcement. He plays a varied set of music from his iPhone throughout the hourlong workout. I definitely laughed at the (somewhat joking) "LIGHT WEIGHT!" yells around the room. I didn't feel like anyone was judging me based on my fitness level or anything else. After the free introductory class, there is usually a complimentary (optional) yoga class with a Big Yoga instructor. It feels great to wind down with some stretching with phenomenal yoga teachers. The gym itself is clean and down-to-earth. Ample water and towels are available! I like that they cap their class sizes to promote safety and higher level of personal coaching attention. If I start working closer to Montrose again, I would definitely consider coming here regularly... and, Roots Juice is just 3 minutes away for an after-workout smoothie! read more

CrossFit Live Oak - Post WOD vibes! - Interval Training Gyms Near Me - Houston, Texas

I bought a living social deal for this gym -- 3 months of unlimited classes for $100. Sounds awesome, right? Well, unfortunately, I was never able to get ahold of someone. I tried for days to get in contact with someone about starting my classes! I was very excited about this deal and about a new gym! I called the number on my deal, I called the number on their website, I emailed the email that was on the website, I filled out their online form so I could be contacted and received an automatic response (good try, guys), and I face booked them. All those contacts and 0 response from them. If you are contemplating buying this deal on living social or YELP, DO NOT BUY IT. I've put in a refund request for living social but I don't think you can do that on yelp. The 10 5-star reviews make me contemplate if they are legit or not. I'm sure they are and hopefully someone is dropping the ball at the gym. Otherwise, this seems to be a MAJOR SCAM. read more

I did a drop in today at GymBowie and it was great. I went to the noon class and there were 4 other members there for the session. I have been doing Cross Fit for just over a year now in Denver, Co at Project Rise (which has great members and are very welcoming and friendly). Some boxes are a little intimidating from what I hear but I have yet to experience that (but again I am still new to Cross Fit). I found GymBowie to be very welcoming as well. Bowie was super nice and I would definitely recommend his gym to go to even if you are a beginner as Bowie seems to have a great not threatening way of coaching. I did like that the gym was super clean and I like that they encourage everyone to wipe down everything after you finish with disinfecting wipes provided by the gym. Lastly, if you are doing a drop in, I LOVE how you can buy a T-shirt in lieu of paying the drop in fee (for the first visit). Check it out, its clean, professional and Bowie is a great Cross Fit coach! read more

This is by far the best crossfit gym I have been to. The facilities are clean and the classes are small. Definitely not the rat race in an old abandoned wearhouse that Crossfitters are so accustomed. In the heart of Montrose is the green building that looks like a weird auto garage with astroturf outside. Inside is an well decorated (and air conditioned) workout facility that appears to add new gadgets on a monthly basis. There are tv monitors and other bits a technology to make the experience more enjoyable. Running the classes are the power couple (pun intended) of Bowie and Emily. They're both very fit, and for somebody that considers himself the anti gym-rat, they never fail to make you feel at home and encouraged. Bowie has an incredible ability to push the die-hards but make newcomers feel welcome. Motivation through encouragement is the path to repeat business, and Bowie has this nailed. Emily is no different, but I've found that girls have a different way of encouraging (by guys wanting to impress them!). My wife has been doing personal training with Emily for a few months now and love it so much that she drives all the way across town. Whatever your desires are, personal training, team atmoshere cross-fit, or smaller groups, This is the place to go... read more

I'm moving within Houston from an apartment with a gym to a townhouse, and was looking for a new gym that offered group classes that would push me a more than my typical lifting routine. I went in today to check out the facility, and was greeted by Bowie who showed me around and explained what his gym was about. I had never done crossfit, but he said they had a class that was about to start and he invited me to join. I jumped in and we started with a row machine / box jump warmup, moved into a circuit of 400m run / snatch / and box jumps, and finished up with some abs. All in all it was a great experience and workout. The whole group was physically pushed, but not at the expense of proper form which was clearly explained and consistently reinforced throughout the workout. I was sold after day one and signed up for the gym, which offers unlimited access to various classes 7 days a week. You also have access to their app which you track each workout on and map your progress, as well as the option to track your nutritional intake which they offer consultation on. I'm looking forward to becoming a part of the team here! read more

Since visiting the Washington Gym, I took my business to Gym Bowie where rates are affordable and people are wonderful (and even this is an understatement). This gym deserves 10 stars for the simple fact that it is the best customer service experience I have ever had (on par with Nordstrom's, REI level). I joined about two months ago, and I am very happy with the results I have accomplished thus far. Bowie and his team know every person who joins their gym and make an effort to be genuinely interested in your goals. The facility is air conditioned and super convenient to those that live in the midtown/montrose area. During the week, I attend femme fit classes (scaled down crossfit workouts without olympic lifts) and on weekends, the crossfit classes. At ~90$ a month I get 3 classes and free yoga per week....when you do the math it comes out to be around $8/class per month. The instructors are very motivating and encourage you to finish the W.O.Ds in an efficient and safe manner. They are also well-versed in health and nutrition and want you to accomplish your goals. I feel the euphoric high from all the endorphins after a crossfit workout, and I have noticed in a short two months that I am becoming stronger and more fit. They also have a smoothie bar with fresh fruit/frozen frui/ protein powder for their clients to use and organized happy hours for those who are interested in bonding with their gym mates. In addition, after I joined they gave me a goody bag with a tshirt and protein powder to jumpstart healthy habits in a team culture. Gym bowie exceeds all of my expectations and I am so happy I stumbled into this place. read more

In Houston for 4 days for a conference and set up a week pass at Live Oak. I contacted three other gyms in the area and this was the only place that responded. Great gym and great staff. Excellent programming and friendly members. They made me feel welcome and helped fix my T2B a little. By the way....best bathrooms I have ever seen at a Crossfit box. read more

I've been to many gyms, had several personal trainers, checked out several crossfit gyms, and this is the best one I've been to. The classes are small, the equipment is tops and the facility is air conditioned enough to enjoy tough workouts even in the middle of summer. The coaches here are excellent, they are encouraging and positive and they pay close attention to everyone's form and technique. I've made big gains in strength and speed since I started. Highly recommend this place! read more

I'm a very very lazy person who hates doing exercises or go for running.. I always gave excuses to skip doing any exercise or go to a gym. But when I was in a situation where I had to change myself and I was looking around to join a decent crossfit gym I came across many many places where they offered many various deals/classes but when I started visiting each crossfit and trying out the classes to see where I am a best fit I have to say gymbowie was the best. I had my first free session with Alex and she took real good care of me. After my first class I decided never ever to quit crossfit as long as I'm in Houston and can keep visiting gymbowie. Carley took my one on one training as I'm a newbie at crossfit and I have never ever felt so encouraged and motivated. I took their 2x per week and honestly I look forward to go to the workouts everyday. Even though I live 25 miles away from the gym I still drive through 1 hour of traffic everyday just to get that 1 hour of excellent motivation and encouragement while I workout and the best part of gymbowie is that they scale the workouts according to your capacity and also they have an awesome app where you can reserve or cancel your workout and also look at the board to check that day's workout. They have an amazing board where they keep track of each and every member and their workouts of that day you have done and they push you gently to move up your game. I can keep going on and on about how great this place is or how great Carley and Bowie are but the best part can only be experienced by visiting the gym and trying their workouts. P.S : I forgot to tell you that this awesome place have the best restroom with a shower and TOWELS and also they are air conditioned. Of course they have water and also a smoothie bar if you like smoothies while you workout ..What else do I want when I go to workout ??? read more

Great Crossfit Box! I echo all the other reviews. Great, clean facility and the members give you a true sense of community as they make up all walks of life. Bowie, the owner and head trainer is amazing along with the other coaches. The classes are kept small to allow these coaches to ensure that proper movements are being done to prevent injury. I've been to a few other crossfit gyms in Houston and they lack in this area severely. There's also a juice and coffee bar on site for you to personally make your pre or post workout shake or grab a cup of coffee before running into the office. There is also a basket full of free fruit (yes free). Upon signing up, you also get access to an app that allows you to track your progress, sign in for classes before-hand and see the WOD (workout of the day), and even make payments. Ladies, one of the things I always check for at gyms is the bathroom! It is clean and they even provide you with hair tie-backs, bobby pins and makeup remover in the event you forgot to pack on your way running out of the house. Outside of the "regular" CrossFit classes, there is also an all-female FemmeFit class. This class does not use the bulky equipment common with the traditional CrossFit workouts, but your butt will still be well whipped - trust me! read more

Wow. What a treat. Gym Bowie is the nicest Cross Fit Gyms I have ever seen. We have seen new gyms pop up across Houston looking and smelling like an old Rocky movie....Don't get me wrong, you are going to sweat like a maniac and will feel as much burn as you can stand.....but this place is a class act. Clean, professional, first class.....if you are looking for a place to learn how to get fit, do yourself a favor and give them a call. Take a couple one-on-one sessions to get the swing of it. You'll be glad you did. This is a great place to get fit! read more

This is a great crossfit gym, the trainers are super friendly and have a very deep knowledge of crossfit and its fundamental movements. Bowie and his staff are great at motivating and pushing people to strive for more and they do it in a very comfortable and respectable way. Asides from the great coaches the facility is top notch, you have state of the art crossfit equipment as well as showers, towels, fans, etc.....basically this is a luxurious gym that is very affordably priced!!! read more

After moving to Houston for the summer, I needed to find a new crossfit gym to workout at. I tried a few others in the midtown area but had little success finding a gym that felt both professional and friendly. Gymbowie met and exceeded both of my criterion, making my experience a very positive one. Although the monthly fees are a bit higher than what I was accustomed to, the amazing culture at Gymbowie motivated me to spend the extra cash and get the unlimited membership (~$200/mo). Additionally, the coaches are extremely helpful and willing to spend the extra time with people to ensure proper form is being used. This is another critical component, necessary for a quality gym. If people don't use the proper form when lifting or when doing dynamic movements, serious injuries can follow. There were numerous occasions when the coaches took time out of their own workouts (the coaches will often join in on the workouts - pretty awesome!) to help improve my form. I would absolutely recommend this gym to anyone even remotely interested in crossfit, from the novice to the expert. There are people of all ages and experience ranges who workout at Gymbowie, making the classes competitive and constructively challenging at all levels. read more

I've trained with Bowie over the years and am blown away by the Gym! It's amazing and I can attest to his personal athletic prowess and commitment to education. This is the real deal folks, an aesthetically pleasing place that provides that extra spark to get you up out of bed. Seriously, the facility is perfect for group fitness and resounds with character (and a healthy dose of luxury). Come and check it out today!!! read more

The moment you walk into this CF box, the staff and members immediately welcome you in to their family and you feel a part of the community. The coaching - from Bowie, to Amy, to Alex - is fantastic and their tips and pointers are very helpful (even for drop-ins like myself). The wods are challenging and fun, and the space itself is what a CF box should be. This is a must visit for any CF'ers visiting the area. Can't wait to get back soon. read more

I came to Gym Bowie from other Houston area crossfit gyms and Gym Bowie is, by far, above the others that I have experienced. Great feeling atmosphere with all the amenities of a regular gym. Crossfit without the warehouse feel. read more

Great gym. Good folks. Bowie is energetic and passionate about health and fitness. Go check it out, you'll be glad that you did.

Great facility. Impeccably clean and good class sizes. Will definitely be dropping in again when we're back in town.

Gym Bowie is a gem in a cool part of Montrose. The facilities are top notch - both the equipment and also the 'extras' - nice bathrooms including showers, a range of healthy or energy food/drink etc, and a/c, and the coaches are totally awesome. Every one of the four coaches are well trained, caring people who are both nice people and also fantastic at what they do, they really know their stuff. They all have their own way of doing things but communicate between them well enough which is good because if you're struggling with a movement by the time you hear four ways to describe the same movement, something will click. They all care about helping you improve or reach your goals. If you have something you need help with or wish to discuss achieving a certain goal - tell them after class and they'll hang out and talk to you to help you figure out how to tackle it. I have worked out at nice gyms in Houston, different cities in the US and overseas and the quality of staff and space at GymBowie is up there with the best of the best. read more

I dropped in since visiting family for the weekend. Beautiful and clean space. Bowie is personable and offers helpful tips all the time to improve your technique and performance. And it was nice to have accessory work after the traditional WOD. I would definitely return. read more

I had a wonderful experience at GymBowie. While passing through Houston I got a great workout on a Saturday morning. From the moment I walked in everyone was very inviting and accepting. The gym is extremely clean and the equipment I believe is well cared for and I believe fairly new. Bowie is an excellent coach and I imagine that extends to the rest of his staff. He was very informative and hands on from the warmup to the post workout stretches. During the workout he offered well placed advice and technique critique while not being over-bearing. The workout itself can vary, but that Saturday workout was great for all levels of individuals. It feels as if they put technique and form above amount of weight and intensity, which I believe is very important with this type of lifting. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone. read more

I wouldn't drop into any other CrossFit gym in Houston!!! Since I don't visit Houston very often (sorry Mom) I have only had the opportunity to workout at GymBowie once. I had such a fantastic experience, that it was enough to convince me that every weekend from here on out that I'm in town, you can find me getting my fitness on at GymBowie! The gym is super clean and the people are amazing. The equipment is all top of the line, and the atmosphere is really positive. I even PR'd my power clean, which to me, says a lot considering it was my first time at GymBowie! I have known Emily since college (Hook 'Em!) - she rocks!!! I've known Bowie my whole life, and he has always been the picture of athleticism and fitness in my mind. If you are looking to get in shape and have fun doing it, give this amazing gym a try! You will not be disappointed! read more
