I started workin' on my fitness about 6 years before finding farmhouse. Distance running, spin classes (I even taught them), boot camp classes, pretending I knew what I was doing with weights at a big gym... I was doing fine, but had been craving a new challenge for a while. I had driven by Farmhouse many times and decided to finally give them a call. I have now been a member for a year and have done things I never thought possible. Every class kicks my ass and I love it. The coaches here are amazing and my new buddies at the gym are always there to cheer me on when I struggle. When I miss a class from my regular routine, I'm bummed. You will learn SO MUCH and be pushed to your limits here, and you will feel SO good after. Again, the coaches are amazing. They will constantly be watching and working with you to keep you in the correct form as you learn new movements and increase your weights. All workouts are adaptable - all have been written at this time for in-person or at-home workouts. Most coaches have backgrounds in chiropractic health and focus on making sure everyone feels their best. Lance, General Manager, programs week by week and monitors members to see how everyone is feeling. Most gyms 'buy' their programming from somewhere. Once it ended ended, I just collapsed onto the floor. I was nearly out of breath, sweaty as f***, and my lower back and shoulders felt like sushi chef deep tissue rubbed them with wasabi. Holy crap. This workout totally sucked, but..... but..... I. CAN'T. GET. ENOUGH! Every time I finish a workout at CrossFit Minneapolis, I feel like my body actually accomplished something. It's a refreshing, and one that's significantly more vigorous than the types of movements found at a traditional gym. No Preacher Curls or lat pulls, yo! Also, the results are almost shocking. I paid a hefty fee for an X number of years at one only to reach a plateau of physical fitness mediocrity. I've been at CrossFit Minneapolis for a year and a half, and I'm so much stronger. For example, my squat has gone up 200 lbs! Aside from WODs, CrossFit Minneapolis also has Olympic lifting classes that occur on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. I love learning and performing variations of squats and clean-and-jerks, thanks to their awesome coaches! Sure, there are tons of CrossFit critics. But with the proper instruction (like at CrossFit Minneapolis), it can be a really effective (and fun) program! If you're looking for a new gym, consider joining this one. It's still one of the best decisions of my life.

I ubered to the gym and was met at the entrance when I…read morewalked in by somebody, maybe a coach, idk, that asked if I was here to see somebody and I said no I just wanted to drop in and he said "did you send an email/call?" And I said no, so he said "oh you didn't send an email or anything and just came in" and I said yeah I was just going to drop in. Then he said "yeah Teresa isn't going to let you workout, you have to sign a waiver and pay a drop in fee and it's only open gym now so..." which I know that I have to sign a waiver and pay I was willing to do that, and I didn't care if it was open gym I just wanted to get a workout in. So I just walked back outside and had to call an Uber back to my hotel. I've been doing CrossFit for a couple years and I've been to a lot of different gyms in different areas and 90% of the time the owner/coach is super friendly and I'll get a waiver signed and maybe pay a drop in fee, some gyms don't even do drop in fees because it's just one or two days. I know it's stupid and not a big deal, but it's just irritating because the CrossFit community is supposed to be supportive and tight knit and when shit like that happens it just really irritates me. The guy was just really rude and condescending for no reason and that shit just pisses me off. Maybe the owner is nice but idk

I'll leave the obligatory note that COVID is still a real threat to everyone's health, and I am glad Solcana is one of the businesses in Minneapolis that is truly taking it seriously. I've been a member of Solcana for nearly a year, and before COVID, the gym itself operated much like many crossfit gyms, with lots of classes, good equipment, and a friendly atmosphere. There has always been a strong focus here on equity and equality (at least as long as we have been members), and that's one of the main reasons why we chose to join. That focus has only become stronger over the past year, and I will touch on it a bit later. When COVID came around, Solcana, like all other gyms, shut down. I have to hand it to them though, they really tried hard to keep delivering a quality product to members, mostly through online classes. After the state started allowing gyms to open up on a limited basis, outdoor barbell classes began again. I've observed quite a few post-covid outdoor classes run by other gyms (whether out on a bike ride or in the park by my house), and many of them have seemed to completely ignore social distancing guidelines. Solcana has been completely different; all of the outdoor classes have felt really safe, with specific areas marked out for every athlete, small class sizes, and strict cleaning practices. This week, we were allowed to go back inside. However, that didn't mean Solcana relaxed their commitment to safety...if anything, they strengthened it. Indoor classes are even smaller, the distance between athletes has grown, masks are mandatory all of the time, and they are making sure everything is cleaned between classes (and there's at least an hour between classes). There are also still outdoor classes, depending on what type of workout you want and how safe you feel indoors. Even with all the new safety practices, the programming has been great, and we feel like we are getting a lot out of our membership, despite not being able to go as much as we were able to before (due to smaller class sizes and fewer classes, there is now a limit on classes per month, but that's completely understandable). Back to social justice...in the wake of the tragedy surrounding George Floyd, Solcana made an even stronger commitment to promoting equity and equality for all, and that's included doing even more with the BLM movement. The gym as de-affiliated from crossfit because of their comments/positions following the tragedy, but aside from not using that name any more (or giving them any money), the programming is pretty much exactly what you would expect from that type of gym. You will also find that this gym is extremely welcoming of all athletes, no matter who you are, what you look like, or how you identify, a trait not all CF gyms share. All in all, this is a wonderful, welcoming fitness community that promotes social justice AND takes COVID very seriously. The owner herself told me that she wants to be the safest gym in the Twin Cities, and so far, it seems they are succeeding.

Rachel showed me how to use the equipment. She was willing and available if I needed more help. They have trainers that aren't pushy. The training area is private but large enough for several people to be trained, but the room is available for everyone at selected times, which is a great place to stretch before my workout, if they aren't training. The main room is large, has nice equipment and new equipment coming in all the time. Cool free weight area and it is spaced well, no smelling the sweaty person next to you. No one seems to be trying to impress anyone else and it isn't packed so it is less intimidating.

Gym is never overcrowded and there is usually minimal wait time if someone is using the equipment you want. From what I have noticed people pretty much keep to them self and do their thing without trying to impress others.

There you can pick where in the room you will be standing as the spots are painted on the ceiling. A bunch of us decided to take a lower body class so I was preparing to just do a bunch of lunges and hurting... lol The class started and the music began. The instructor took us through a warm up routine and then began to explain all the stations. There were 5-6 stations and we were to rotate between them. Yes, lounges were on the menu! Man, I was getting my butt kicked! each station had certain movements that focused on a certain body part and yes, I was sweating and crying lol. This lasted for about 45 minutes, once we were done with the stations twice, we rolled into a cool down period and eventually the class ended. What I liked about the class is that there was constant movement and you didn't get board with the movement. If I kept going to this class I know I would be in waaay better shape than I am but unfortunately, I don't live in town. I would try it out if you are visiting of living there. Its not too huge and intimate enough that you aren't lost in the crowd.
