I have to say I am quite disappointed with this place. My wife and I were on vacation in the U.K. and one of here requests was that we stay in a castle. I did a little research and found Crossbasket to be fairly close to a "big" city; about 10-15 outside Glasgow. I was a little shocked at the £405 (around $525) price tag, but how often does one stay in a castle?
We arrived around 6pm on the check-in day and I was immediately greeted by the concierge. A nice gal with some quirky tendencies, but she was doing her best. I gave her my name and she said I was in the second floor (this is the 3rd floor in the US). She then insisted that she show me my room. Not a problem. However, it is a problem when one must traverse three flights of stairs. In all reality, with the ceilings being about 15ft high, this was four floors high. Again, not a problem for me, but the poor girl was struggling a bit toward the top. We got to the room and I had to sign some paperwork. I am not sure if walking up the stairs is more elegant than using a fully functioning elevator, but I could clearly hear her labored breathing and panting, which certainly isn't elegant. I was given an actual key and asked, twice, if I needed help with my luggage. I insisted I didn't.
We walk into the hotel and are again asked if we need assistance with the luggage, this time with the bellhop being present. My wife was unaware of my previous refusals, so she says "Sure". I am actually annoyed at this point. What part of "No" doesn't she understand?
Our room is quite large and appears well decorated. However, the cocktail table is extremely wobbly and almost falling apart; the armoire housing the tv is constructed in a way that the doors do not recess, meaning the doors permanently protrude so one can only view the tv while directly in front of the piece (a minor inconvenience, but one that should be remedied). It would be nice if the windows opened more than four inches to allow a cold breeze into the room. I understand A/C isn't typical here, but this is a modern convenience that certainly should be added. The room was 25C, around 80F, and very uncomfortable.
I feel I way overpaid for what I got here. How is a Hampton Inn priced at less than half able to offer me a free breakfast, A/C, free morning coffee, free evening tea, free bottled water, and Crossbasket isn't able to offer me anything except a bottle of water and some strawberries? I absolutely hate paying a premium price for a hotel and am then nickel-and-dimed to death. How about a continental breakfast or even free coffee? How about a free glass of wine or something upon check-in? Make me want to come back! Sadly, I do not want to come back at all. read more
