Shame about the newly build housing area nearby, but an amazing red sandstone 13th century stronghold !
This castle is linked to the Black Douglases through marriage of Archibald Douglas "the Grim" to Joan Moray..... Won't bore you with the details :-)
Its a place I planned to visit for ages.
There are two sides to this castle: The majestic views to one side and the powerful 13th century architecture of the original tower (dojon), of which only a little bit remains, because of sieges by the English. Well, the Scots also decided to slight the original tower so that the castle would not be useful in case of English occupancy during the 14th century.
The other side is the boring one. Nearby you can see new houses build, which takes away the mystic element of this extraordinary fortress.
Having said this, there is plenty of space to walk the grounds. Lots of dog walkers!
You can stroll along a path overlooking the River Clyde and Valley with beautiful views onto the surrounding countryside.
The place is a ruin with only the outer walls remaining, a bit of the original tower to climb up the steps to its peak and a bit of the great hall from the 14th century. You need quite a bit of imagination to see this place what it once was.
Take a chance; Its a 1h ride from Edinburgh. read more
