Steve was helpful in helping us determine what we wanted to do long term with Tae Kwon Do. He allowed us to try out Judo classes for a week as well as the upper Kata and sparring class. My son loves coming here and although seating can be limited, we do too! Tip: During belt testing, bring a lawn chair and snacks for your kiddo. This place is also great and making sure you get your money's worth! We ordered swords for kata class and they came in but Steve and team weren't happy with the quality so they promised new ones while letting us have the one that came in to use until the better ones come in. They really look and act like a family here. There is a parent association group that helps raise money for tournaments, etc. All in all, we love it here and it's worth the drive for us!

Still to this day when I walk into the dojo I feel like I'm walking into my own home always getting that warm greeting welcome. This is by far my one and only karate school I will ever go too. I'm getting my kids ready to go to their school in the near future so they can have the exact knowledge and connection I have with the pipers and their school. This Kenpo school seemed very intense vs some of the other martial arts that I've witnessed and been involved with, I worked for a Muay Thai instructor for about two years. Any way. While I know there are differences in the schools of thought and the level of discipline that is needed in each practice I always knew there to be one thing in common. Respect. Respect for the 'class room, the art, the student, the teacher, just through and through everything was based on respect. I found it very concerning that this school didn't seem to follow that. They spoke of money openly and about their policies on their tests. Not unusual but they did it in a joking manner that I've know to only be associated with people who were clearly taking advantage of the individuals they were taking money from. This was after the conclusion of the belt test itself. As for the instructor himself, and I do apologize for the fact that I cannot remember his name just that he was the owner/founder/head instructor. Well I know belt tests can be rough, but there was a harshness that seemed to be contained by the man, like if there wasn't an audience and wasn't a live video going he would have been acting differently. That he was in himself restrained in what was his natural state. I hadn't intended to write any reviews but after over hearing a conversation between a mother and son tonight I felt a warning needed to be put out there. To protect the individuals involved I will not be using their names. However, while eating out tonight I couldn't help but over hear this family talking. When I inquired further I discovered that tonight it appears that the instructor called one of his students out to the front of the class. From what I gathered this isn't unusual. But he then proceeded to curse out, berate, and threaten to have his 'black belts come in and beat this students ass' and then kick out seemingly ban this student over what appeared to be a comment they made on social media that the instructor didn't agree with. I called my friend who attends this school and he admitted that he isn't surprised that this happened. While I can appreciate the idea that one is responsible for what One posts on a social media site -such as Yelp, Twitter, or Facebook- there is no reason for someone in a leadership, instructor role to do that. Publicly shaming someone who had put their trust in that person's leadership. From what I gather this follows more of the unprofessional and what now seems to be abusive behavior and I will not be allowing my children to attend this school.

I have two daughters (age 7 and…read more4) who attend the weekly classes and I also took a Womens Self Defense class from Mr. Strickland recently! The kids classes are excellent. Both my girls are engaged the whole time and I love how the kids are learning things that they don't even realize. Having daughters, it's so important to me that they are involved in martial arts and I feel like their confidence has boosted as a result. I also recently took a Womens Self Defense class and I cannot rave about it enough. Not only were we taught all the fundamental self defense moves, but we did mock scenarios where we had to put our skills to the test. I will 100% sign up for this class every year for a refresher. Additionally, I absolutely LOVE the fact that upon leaving the class, Mr. Strickland said that if you take away nothing else, I hope you take with you the will to fight back if anything ever happens to you. That kind of encouragement especially from a male leader is very powerful. We absolutely love this studio and are so happy to be here.

I looked around at a number of schools in the area for my son. I wanted to enroll him in karate not…read moreto teach him to fight, but because I wanted him to learn self control, community, respect, and also to help him with his strength, especially in his core. My son is special needs and started at age 6. The Sabumnim there realized pretty quickly that a full class setting wasn't a good fit for him. So they sat down with us and rather than say "we can't do this" like so many places had in the past, he said "I think he would do better in private lessons for a while." WOW. So we did that. Still very reasonable in price, but it allowed my kiddo to learn in a setting that was appropriate for him. We did that for 2 years until the instructors invited him into class. Now at age nine, he is almost ready to move up to the bigger kids classes and start the full belt path. The kindness, the patience that the entire Karate Workshop family has is amazing. They understand his issues, but they don't bow to them. He is accommodated to a point, but if his behavior is out of bounds, they call him on it and there are appropriate steps taken to work past it. They don't do the "every six months or weeks you move up a belt" thing here. If you are looking for them to give you a belt rank just for showing up, this isn't the school for you. You or your child have to work to earn it. When you get those stripes and ranks, it's because you deserve to have it. You can actually do what is expected at that level. They also make sure they build community there. All of us feel it, feel welcome and like we matter. We use each others services and promote each other's companies and work. It's a pretty amazing place all around.

GPKA has been operating for more than thirty years in Grand Prairie at this same location. Attend a belt test there and you will see a full panel of black belts that reads like a who's who of Texas Karate. Two years later, and I can't think of life without GPKA. I joined shortly after my son did and am now a brown belt there. The instructors are top notch, and the gym is owned by a legend of Texas Karate - Dr. Brax Boyd - a man who counts Chuck Norris as a long-time friend and professional associate.
