At first, I was a little confused by this Chinese-named hostel run by an older Caucasian woman…read more But in her younger days, Laurel traveled quite a bit, becoming enamored with China (hence the Chinese hostel name). Because of her traveling, Laurel is familiar with what makes a good hostel, and accordingly provides those perks - clean beds, free soap/shampoo/conditioner, all you can eat waffle breakfast, hang-out common area for socializing, shared kitchen, board games, and bike storage locker. There's even a world map for you to pin where you're from. (Sidebar: As you'd expect, the clientele are outdoorsy folks (hikers and bicyclers), so they're on the younger side. Which is a bit different from the Teahorse website which shows a bunch of older folks congregating together.) There are a few down sides to this hotel though, which is why I knocked the rating down a star. Beyond Laurel's control, the hostel is about a mile from Harper's Ferry and that mile is 95% steep uphill, which wasn't especially fun on a bike. (It's also technically not in Harpers Ferry but the next town over.) The price is also a bit on the steep side for a hostel. We paid ~$145 for a room (consisting of 4 bunk beds). If you're renting just a bed, you'll also pay ~$35 a person, and could possibly end up in the shared room for 8. Maybe these are Harpers Ferry prices, but I know of hostels in downtown Boston that charge about the same price. Overall though, I enjoyed my experience here.

Well, I only intended to stay one night but was there almost a week because I did not want to leave and It was so inexpensive that I could afford to extend my stay. The place is so lovely and comfortable and welcoming- like outspread arms. The hosts are good-natured, kind and so generous with their time. Everything you've read or heard about 'Mountain Home' is true. Lisa and Scott are Angels and 'Mountain Home' is a little slice of Heaven.

The hike itself was fairly easy and can be finish under a hour. It is dog friendly, fairly shaded, and trail is well marked. You can sit down on the rock ledges and look at the incredible panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There is a small parking lot. It's a perfect spot for a quick getaway from the city, whether you're going for sunrise, sunset, or just a relaxing day outdoors. After can hit up Bear Chase Brewery close by.

Kitchen space, free coffee and tea, toiletries, two small social spaces. Staff are friendly and helpful. There was a private bathroom with a shower in my the shared room but also various separate private bathrooms on all the floors with a shower. Great location next to lots of restaurants. It did get pretty busy out on Saturday night but every other night was fine. Parking is a little tricky. There is a garage across the street, but the garage was pretty packed Saturday night unless you were already parked there. I would definitely stay here again.

The staff was pleasant each time I encountered them, which was often as I was in and out Friday and Saturday. I used the lobby area for dinner one night and each time I waited for an Uber. I enjoyed seeing the diversity of the fellow guests. I had an issue with the person in the bunk below me. They moved my shoes and then came out of the bathroom, interrupted my phone conversation, and told me that they'd moved my shoes because they were near her head, which was completely false. I was able to communicate with the front desk without leaving my bed as I was exhausted from traveling. They promptly replied, said they would communicate with her, and gave me the option to move to a different space. I did not take them up on that offer because I didn't feel like moving my belongings nor risking having another issue. This was my second time using a hostel. The bed was comfortable. The locker space was enough for my luggage and belongings. My only issue was sometimes forgetting to duck down getting in and out of the bed. Being on the top bunk, I couldn't always sit all the way up straight. I'm assuming that that experience will vary according to your height. Not wanting to disturb others the mornings I'd leave early, I sometimes used the restrooms in the hallway. It took a while for the hot water to come on in the hallway bathroom closest to room 223. The shower in that bathroom sprayed quite a bit, so a shower cap is recommended if you're not wanting to wash or get your hair wet. The other hallway bathroom's shower didn't spray, but the sink temperature was opposite; nothing major. The linens were clean, but I did notice hair near the wall as I plugged up my electronics to charge. Probably could stand to wipe the area next to the bed down when linens are changed. I enjoyed my weekend in DC and would definitely return to this property for another solo trip.

Only had one other person staying here besides me, but I can imagine it would get noisy when it's busier. Only small complaint is that the shower needs to be more thoroughly cleaned out. There was some muck and an old bandaid pushed into the corner. Took advantage of the $3 for laundry service and used their super new washer and dryer. Was so happy to clean the muck off!

The second floor was reserved for females and the first floor was reserved for males. One of my hiking friends paid for my stay (I think it was $25) and it included dinner and breakfast. I was given clean sheets and a pillowcase in a ditty bag. On the bunk beds were a mattress covered in plastic, a pillow covered in plastic and a blanket. I slept on top of the sheets in my sleeping bag to keep warm, I like my sleeping bag (personal preference). Not sure if laundry is self serve or if the person who works there does it for you. Our group was on a tight schedule and I had not time to do laundry. The place was very CLEAN. The showers had excellent water pressure and the water was HOT. The hospitality was awesome! Our group will be coming back two more times to visit and stay. We loved it there. There is also a small General Store very nearby that serves DELICIOUS sandwiches until 6pm.

There are all the comforts of home, shower, you can use the kitchen....but there are a few good restaurants close by also. Walking distance to the grocery store and a shuttle back to the trail the next day. We arranged a slack packing day also!! All in all one of the most welcoming laid back hostels on the Appalachian trail! Thanks for everything!!!

As far as hostels go it doesn't have a lot of amenities or activities that aren't Quaker related but whatever...it was cheap and safe.

Everything is clean and the house has a lot of New England charm. Plus there are lots of shops, restaurants, and bars just a few blocks away. I definitely would stay here again and recommend it to others.
