Phew...feels like I just came out for the second time! In fact, back when I was a kind, my Mom taught me all different kinds of needlework: I knitted a scarf, I crocheted a couple pot holders, I knotted a small rug, sewed a pillow case and I even embroidered a few handkerchiefs for my grandmother. Admittedly, I haven't done any sort of needlework since I was that little kid, but a few weeks ago I was doing a friendship bracelets for my little niece and the steady - almost meditative - rhythm of laying the threads one over another, reminded me again of all these evenings that I spent with my Mom...and so I was hooked again. I was hooked almost literally: I dug out my crochet hook...but like a junkie who possesses a spoon but no heroin, I was now in desperate need of some sort of yarn. Given that it was Sunday, not all haberdashery shops are open, but Yelp pointed me in the direction of the next available "dealer": Knit With Attitude (fabulous name, by the way). And so, through the rain, I ventured over to Stoke Newington to get my next fix: pure 100% cotton yarn! Knit With Attitude is a small and cute shop on Stoke Newington High Street (not far away from the lovely independent Stoke Newington Bookshop). What stands out right away is the counter that is covered with crocheted granny squares. (Reminds me of the guerilla knitting where people decorate lampposts or trees with a colourful skirt.) The front of the shop offers yarns and other knitting supplies, while in the back there seems to be a room where people can actually get together and do some work. (I had a quick glance at their website and it looks like they do offer workshops and courses of all sorts - mental bookmark!) In any case, I found my desperately-needed yarn and I'm now in the process of crocheting my very own beanie hat.

I would give the shop itself 5*'s as friendliness and London don't always go together. However, for people not from the area, be warned that the shop is in a not great section of town. I stepped out of the shop and walked to the street crossing to the left and was mugged. Two persons on a motorbike ran the bike onto the sidewalk nearly running me over and while I attempted to jump out of the way they snatched the phone out of my hands. Talking to the police after the incident and a couple who stopped to help, they informed me that I wasn't in the safest area. As a tourist I am vigilant but I was still accosted. If you go to Knit with Attitude just be aware of your surroundings. I hope my review will help someone else who isn't aware.

The location of this store is decent, it is on Tottenham Court Road and is basically right next to Argos, and opposite Superdrug and Natwest (or at least a few minutes walk away on the other side of the road) This store is quite large, but the selection of stock is merely average for a store of its size, even compared to other Paperchase stores, I didn't notice a lot of cool items which they didn't sell in other stores, for example in terms of lever arch folders, they all seemed the same with nothing new compared to other flagship stores such as Manchester, and more smaller stores such as Newcastle or Liverpool. The store is over three floors, there is a bookshop and Tinderbox Coffee Shop on the first floor and a Crafts / Magazine floor on the Second. The staff around the store didn't seem too friendly either. This store overall was quite impressive in terms of size but for everything else, it was just average. I'm struggling here, although the size of the store is impressive I can't help but feel some aspects with the feel of the store, the service not being great, the level of products not being as good as one would expect from the size of the store, and the unwelcoming nature as you enter the store, I sadly feel it deserves just two-stars.

There are a few fabric shops on Berwick street so shop around for the fabric you want at the price you want. I've never bought fabric from a shop before, i've always gone to the market, and this place was a bit pricey at £3/m for undyed cotton. The place is an Aladdin's cave of fabric and the staff were helpful and asked what weight fabric i wanted. I hadn't a clue but they had some good advice for me. They even climbed over mountains of other fabric to get me the cloth i wanted. I'm going to keep shopping around for somewhere cheaper, but will go back if i'm in the area.

However, not only is it…read moreoverpriced, (for ex. you can get the same metallic leatherette/coated fabric at Borovicks for £22.00 a meter instead of £35.00) the staff here are EXTREMELY rude. To be honest, most of the fabric stores on Berwick St. have grouchy and sullen employees, but this place is the worst. I have shopped at the fabric shops on Berwick Street since 2013 and the rotten attitude of the staff at this store (in my experience) has been consistent. It has not mattered who has worked there, that's the funny part, I am not even speaking about one person. Everyone I have ever encountered there is rude. About two years ago I mentioned how unpleasant the staff were to another salesperson at MacCulloch & Wallis and he told me that he used to work there, agreed that the staff were unfriendly and in particular worked a woman who customers always complained about. The negative vibes this store gives off has discouraged me from shopping there for about a year or more. But today I thought I would go in, because it does have a great selection. However, once again the Berwick Street Cloth Shop vibe was moody. Therefore I have finally decided to write this negative review because of my final horrible experience. I was looking at fabric bent down while a sales person was busy organizing the rolls of cloth across from me. She accidentally hit me in the face with the end of the fabric roll. I stammered "oh sorry" and as she turned around to glare at me, she aloofly said "what, did I hit you?" to which I replied "yes". She then very (surprise!) rudely responded "sorry". So I said "I am sorry I guess I am in the way" to which she said "no it's fine". LIKE OBVIOUSLY IT'S FINE I AM A CUSTOMER. It's absolutely okay to accidentally bump into someone or hit them in the face, but to do so and not react until the person who has been hit says sorry to which you then glare back is too much. Literally comical. There are so many shops on Berwick Street, for price and value go to my favorite shop there The Cloth Shop. The selection is varied and the staff are much much much more friendly. Fabric shops should be enjoyable to enter and explore. No one should feel intimidated to go and ask for help or buy stuff. Lastly I feel bad for anyone who works there that is nice, because I have not met you and this review is focused on everyone being glum. But in my experience I have only ever encountered mean spirited people. Two stars, one for beautiful goods and the other for the one nice employee who maybe exists there.

The writing sets are particularly stylish although they can be quite expensive. Similarly, they have a great selection of Moleskin diaries and books but these can cost anything upwards of £15. On the other hand they have a great selection of arty presents for kids which all seem very reasonably priced and a lot of fun too for that matter! I defy anyone to be too old for face-paints.
