Once upon a time I would never dream of going into a discount super market, oh what I was missing!…read moreRite Price is a wonderful place, especially if you don't believe what the used by date says! There are many products that are in date and you can really get a great bargain, and then there are the Eastern European Imported products that are as entertaining as finding a tin in your pantry without a label and daring yourself into eating whatever the contents may be! I particularly like the Prospect Venue as I have found the staff there particularly friendly and always keen for a brief chin wag while scanning your goods....not too much of a chat, just enough to pass the check out time. No one likes a 'Chatty Cathy'! P.S. If you have a sweet tooth like myself you save a bundle if you stock up rather than going to traditional sources!

So here's a little insight into my background: I grew up in a family who owned a supermarket…read moremeaning that anytime that something was about to go out of date....or actually DID, it would end up on our dinner table - and here's the thing...I never got sick and it always tasted great (which could have something to do with my mum being some what of a master chef...) Anyhow, my point is that the 'use by' or 'best before' is just a date for legal purposes (for many but not all products)...there is a bit of flexibility here. Those of you unfamiliar with the Rite Price chain may wonder why I am bringing this up, so here's the deal: Rite Price is a discount supermarket. Not all, but most of there wares are on the shelves because they are near this use-by or past their best before and are therefore severely discounted. So here's a depressing fact - 20% of all our groceries go to waste...and I recall that when we had the supermarket, a lot of stuff ended up in the bin. It's such a shame to straight out waste food - but you can prevent food being wasted by supermarkets AND save yourself a BUNCH of dolla dolla by having a look at Rite Price! Now they don't have EVERYTHING but if you head here first, you can definitely plan around what you can find and as the previous reviewer wrote, yes there are always plenty of cheap treats for the sweet tooth. Recent bargains - HUGE wheels of cheese - brie, blue and all the fancy ones, still in date for a few days for only $4.50. Perfect for the weekend picnic, yes? Added bonus - they are now open til 7pm on Thursdays for all those who work all day long! - enjoy the cheap life!

Super Dollar Variety is my favourite…read more It's my favourite place to get hardware, it's my favourite place to get minor toiletries, it's my favourite place to get fake flowers, it's my favourite cheap store in Torrensville. As a professional cheapskate, I pride myself on my knowledge of local cheap spots. Super Dollar Variety is the best dollar store in my area, with the biggest range of hardware, homeware, kitchenware, garden ware, all the wares you can think of. Super Dollar Variety seems to specialise in useful things - like drill bits and garden hose attachements - distinguishing itself from the other dollar stores in the area. Sure, some of the things break quicker than others, but still. Like most cheap stores it has a puzzling but cute range of odd meerkat/dolphin/walrus/mystical-animal-of-choice sculptures, so don't worry you can get useless stuff here too. The place is called Super Dollar Variety, which - by the way - is hilarious.

Variety and super dollars? Those are two criteria I shop with when searching for bargains in…read moreAdelaide. A huge range of practical home wares, tupper wares and hard wares can all be found here without much fuss, but there isn't much variety when it comes to random stuff you never needed (if you want that then head across the road to the other discount store). And to be honest there isn't much super dollar priced merch here. It is good value but probably not "super" value but it is better than the major supermarkets. So if you're looking for tongs, plastic tubs, scissors, string, toiletries etc then this is a great stop over instead of paying $5 more at the check out elsewhere.

I am always amazed as to how discount stores can fit so much variety of stock into one dingy little…read moreshed like location and yet still charge half the price of normal retail. Even if not all the stock are on the shelves, there is a ridiculously good variety for such a tiny store. Even the big $2 shops don't carry as much variety in home and garden with garden twisty ties, bike lights, party wares, an isle of Australiana themed adornments and a cheap art materials. Service is friendly without being persistent, and they'll often bargain or throw extra things into the bag with you if you're willing to get your bartering shoes on. With easy parking and an incredible range here, you can get it "cheap enough" to warrant a visit on any day of the week. BIGGEST DOWNFALL? These guys can't do refunds "unless the manager of the shop is around." When will the manager be back? "Oh well you know, he comes in and out, we never really know when he'll be in, he's only around once a week or so." ie. They don't do refunds or exchange so make sure you definitely need what you are buying.

This isn't my favourite cheap store in the area - that would be Super Dollar Variety - but it's…read morepretty good. It has a medium-sized range of home wares, decorations, kitchen ware, garden tools, toys, toiletries, hardware and clothes. The prices are cheap - obviously. While there isn't a huge range here, they do carry a few things I haven't seen at Super Dollar Variety. Last winter they had a great range of coloured socks, beanies and fingerless gloves for very cheap. Their garden stuff isn't bad either - a few months ago I bought some seeds from here that have just yielded a little crop of fresh peas. My favourite thing to pick up here though is fluroescent paint. That might be a bit obscure, but they have the most amazing coloured flurorescent paint at Get It Cheap!

'Yay! I'm a fan.'…read more With all this fresh fruit and fresh vegetables available I don't understand how some people would rather choose junk food. You're crazy! Adelaide Fresh Fruiterers are well known for having exceptionally great produce, and I would have to say that I agree with them. I love this store. It's a pretty large store, and everything is always displayed so well. Before you even walk into the store you get to see all the different fruits displayed outside. Everything is so colourful, it's almost hard to resist grabbing the reddest apple you can find and just sinking your teeth into it. Great customer service, affordable prices and fresh produce.

Forget crappy supermarket "fresh' fruit and veggies - isn't there a law against false advertising -…read moreAdelaide Fresh is the place to go for really fresh fruit and veggies. I just couldn't wait to sink my teeth into an apple, straight from the Adelaide Hills, which had me reaching for a Kleenex, juice was literally running down my chin it was that fresh! And the range of apples. What a delight to be re-acquainted with good old fashioned species, along with new ones I'd not heard of before. And before I get totally carried away on just Apples (I'm an Apple 'nerd') I should mention that Adelaide Fresh carry a huge range of seasonal fruits and veggies. The majority of their range is locally grown and produced. But if you reach, as I did without looking properly, for something which is imported, one of the friendly staff will tell you 'it's from China' - oh so good to be alerted to that fact and re-directed to organic Australian grown produce (just for the record garlic was the product in question). As if seriously fresh fruit and veggies wasn't enough, they also carry a good range of natural, organic raw honey. It's not the most extensive range I've seen but certainly large enough to keep the Pooh Bears of us happy, and also my dog who's on natural honey for her allergies. Yep, honey is fantastic for your pooches too. Added to the temptation in this one stop shop, well almost unless you're a carnivore, is a large variety of nuts and other tasty delights. Along with fresh herbs, complete in many cases with their roots still attached. Forget the poor forlorn, sad little bunches smothered in plastic sans their roots, these are the real Mccoy - you just have to smell them. My partner claims the Prospect Store is better but as I haven't as yet sampled their delights, I can only speak about the Fulham Gardens shop. Being in a small shopping center, there' plenty of parking available so it's easy to load the car up after a delightful time wandering around Adelaide Fresh. Last but definitely not least, the shop itself is a delight. No loud muzac or announcements assaulting your ear drums whilst you're browsing. And the staff are very friendly and helpful. They'll answer even the dumbest of questions with a smile and don't mind you snatching at an apple seconds after it's been scan! So do your taste buds and your health a favor and try Adelaide Fresh it really does live up to it's name.
