Not too sure if that's the pronunciation but let's just go with it hey! As I enter the door I'm greeted by staff who know me by name. They really like to get to know the regulars and it does make it feel like we are friends. Well they have food? Hello! I'll be anyone's bestie when it involves food. I cook a lot of Asian food, like 90% of my family meals. This place is right around the corner from me, but even not I would still travel to come here. Each week there is always something new and interesting I find and want to try. They have trolleys and baskets. I always, ALWAYS opt for the trolley since making the mistake of carrying a basket once and it was completely overloaded. I always have intentions of coming in 'just for a few things' but it never ends that way. From a huge freezer section to the left full of seafood, dumplings and vegan meat alternatives to name a few. A cool open fridge section with a huge variety of drinks, kimchi, tofu and vegetables. I could go on and on about the copious amounts of sauces, condiments, dried herbs, tinned foods, but you really need to go and see for yourself. What I love most is that they don't just stock one asian cuisine. I especially love the Indonesian and Japanese sections. There is also a butcher in the back. I'd love to buy organic but that's a pipeline dream for now. The chicken, beef and pork here is of great quality and fantastically priced. I'm talking under $10/kg for nearly every cut of meat. I make super savings by buying majority of my meats here. The only thing they don't stock is lamb and not a huge range of beef. So my fellow Yelp-tastic peeps. If you are in need of an Asian grocery store in the Western Suburbs then come and shop here. Then we can all eat, be merry and Dai Phat together!

Why review a grocery store? Normally I wouldn't unless something special is on offer and that's the…read morecase here. This is a newly built facility that has two levels of underground parking-free for the first couple of hours. A spacious, clean elevator takes you up to the ground level store entry. A separate elevator will take you up one more floor to really nice modern, clean bathrooms. But, alas, no Dyson hand dryers :-( Note that there is a very nice independent butcher shop just before you enter the Foodland-I'm a big fan of it and their WILL be a review soon. The Foodland store is so clean, bright and well-stocked it almost hurts the eyes, but you adjust and move on with your shopping. We usually go on Sundays, after taking The Casper (our dog) to the beach. Another reason we are a fan of the (cool) underground parking. On Sundays around noon, they are always busy, but not so busy that it's hard to make your way up and down the isles or that you feel like you are in the way when it takes you a couple of minute of browsing to find just the right kind of tuna in a can from the 700 different varieties on offer. The selection is excellent and you shouldn't have any trouble finding your favourite items. That's not always true at our neighbourhood grocery store. Once, when we were after a large quantity of a special item on sale we asked if we could get a couple of cartons from the back. "Sure," was the cheerful reply and quick-as-a-wink they brought it out for us. At most stores you can't even find someone to help you, much less this kind of customer service. Kudos to Foodland employees. With all this goodness, there is a downside to shopping here. Once inside the new, well-built store you get NO mobile phone signal. Nothing, nada, zippo. So no checking email, messages, calling home to ask about something on your shopping list, checking prices online, looking up a recipe's ingredients online, or using your phone like a walkie-talkie and doing team shopping. This is an egregious oversight that could be remedied, for the most part, by putting in a free wireless hotspot. But, except for shutting off contact with the outside world, this is a great grocery shopping experience. Eat, drink and be merry-but not too much. JD

When it first opened I spent two hours going up and down every aisle and I'm pleased to say that the standard is still as high now. The newness hasn't worn off. Staff friendly and helpful. They always seem to have enough checkouts open. There are so many alternative or unusual products available that it makes shopping a dream. Eg gluten free, local producers, quinoa, buckwheat pasta, many choices of tofu, blocks of nougat, 3 or 4 sorts of rocket. Great deli counter. Look out for the pink stickers. Often great bargains to be had. Plus, being so close to the beach, it makes a domestic task feel like being on holiday!

I'm super glad I discovered this supermarket, as I've been wanting to experiment with more Indian cooking, and struggle to find lots of the ingredients. I now know where to come to find ghee, as well as tamarind paste, which I'm always in need of for Asian dishes. This shop has a huge range of different flours for authentic Indian food, which I'd have no idea what to do with. However, the owner will happily tell you what each product is for and recommend alternative methods. There is flour specifically for making roti, fine semolina, maize flour, and many other types of flour I can't pronounce. Not game to try it from scratch, I bought a ready-mix packet for gulab jamun, a type of Indian dessert I really like. The owner gave me tips on how to cook the dumplings, which you then soak in a syrup. I can't wait to try it! And one box makes 125 dumplings, and costs $3.50. So hopefully I can master the art after a few batches. Or at least make them edible. The shop also stocks a huge range of flavourings and spices, as well as lots of dried and fresh seafood. There is a full row of spicy snack foods of all varieties, which I think I'll try using at our next party. The owner will try to sell you pre-cooked take away meals from the cold selection in the fridge, which for $8 per meal, I'd more likely go across the road to the Indian take away. However I was tempted by the bulk boxes of samosas. I sense a themed dinner party coming up...

I'm with Jo, this is a pretty decent place if you're doing some Indian cooking. Being married to a former baker (and having a very small amount of experience baking myself), I do find the range of flours interesting, and my wife seems to be able to magically transform each of them into a tasty bread. Her naans and rotis are amazing, probably thanks in no small part to the availability of the correct flour thanks to Golden India. I like this place. I'm not really game for the pre-packaged meals, but everything else seems good.
