It was only because of my very little tax knowledge that I was even able to get any money back from my return (he redid the expenses per my suggestion). His prices were ok, but you really pay for what you get. To compound his ineptitude, he delivered my taxes late to the IRS and never told me!!! I only found out when I received an IRS bill for $400 in the mail. He said he would take care of it, but never did. After sending him copies of the bill, he has only ignored my many emails and calls - leaving me with a $400 tab.

The difference with Carl is that I know I can trust him and count on things to be done right and on time (but just like anyone else, it helps to provide proper records/docs in advance of IRS and state deadlines). It would be a lot harder to invest in real estate without Carl's expertise. This includes dealing with returns for LLCs (K1s), depreciation of properties, as well as repairs and renovations. He's a great sounding board and advisor as well, and I highly recommend you contact him if you need a CPA (and most people do), especially if you're based in Virginia and own real estate.

I'm also one of those horrible last-minute filers. So it was that I realized at 5pm on Friday, April 12th (before the April 15th tax deadline, mind you) that I needed to file a D-30 Unincorporated Business Franchise Tax Return for my the AirBnB I began in 2018. I frantically called various CPAs throughout the DMV to try to get some advice on my D-30 situation (at 5:30pm on a Friday). No luck. Then I found the Lipsey and Associates blog post on AirBnB and casual rental income, which was very helpful in itself. And then I sent a horribly long e-mail explaining my situation to Jeff Lipsey and asking for his advice. At 6pm on the Friday before Tax Day. Most people would have probably just laughed at my e-mail and then gone back to enjoying their weekend. But not Jeff. He responded to my e-mail within 12 hours, and then answered my follow-up questions in less than an hour!!! As a result, I was able to deduct more business expenses and ended up netting almost $2,000, as compared to the tax returns I prepared prior to receiving Jeff's advice. I called several tax accountants in the area to find out every single tax accountant (even in the big name branches) are basically on vacation all fall and summer. I was first looking for someone to do taxes in 2018 for the 2017 tax year. As usual, I did reviews before trusting my taxes to anyone. I researched the "big" commercial names, like H&R Block and the do it yourself names but wanted to know they would be done right the first time. I stumbled upon Crystal Tax and couldn't be happier. Mr. Geever is knowledgeable, super prompt to reply to email and incredibly quick with the preparation (and it didn't hurt that I got a refund!). We haven't even met - everything has been online or through email, which is great as it is hard to get to an accountant when you work. And Rich was patient with my tax questions. I had no hesitation trusting him to do my taxes again this year.
