I did extensive Yelp research and talked with three jewelers before selecting Kevin Crane to do a slight repair on my solitaire band. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to buy jewelry or have it repaired. Despite that Kevin's sense of humor initially set me on guard (I'm a bit serious and don't tend to like salespeople in general), I found that he was the most responsive, knowledgable, and affordable (within a very thin margin) of the three jewelers. And in the end, he was really the only one of the three proposing to hand deliver just what I wanted. I was recently bequeathed a family heirloom solitaire diamond ring. Heirloom meaning it has no barcode, but can only be identified based on mapping its very slight imperfections and based upon its overall dimensions, weight, cut, and other characteristics. So, after hearing about jewelers swapping out stones in family jewelry in the past (and it taking lengthy processes to recoup compensation for the wrongdoing), I was admittedly wary of anyone working on this ring. However, it needed to be partially restored, because the crown's six prongs were in danger of no longer holding the stone due to normal wear and tear and also apparently some slight damage. Kevin helped me to select a new platinum crown and replaced it, setting the diamond slightly lower than before at my request. He also thinned and polished the band at my request (to better match my wedding band). All of the work was done within three weeks and looked stunning upon pick-up. And, when I had the diamond re-checked at the gemologists that originally appraised the ring, they confirmed it was in fact the same stone - not that I had any doubts once I saw it again - but just so you know, there is evidence that Kevin is just as trustworthy as he attests to being. I also witnessed him talking to a young couple looking for an engagement ring, and heard him providing them highly accurate information about diamond clarity and color scales. They had apparently received some very odd scale from another jeweler. So all in all, he does great work and has exceptional integrity. I "pre-inherited" a diamond and platinum ring from my mother this year that had belonged to my great-grandaunt. It was from the early 1900s,and had seen close to 100 years of hard use. Even with all of the wear and tear, you could see it had a unique Art Deco style. Unfortunately, it was so badly damaged, it could no longer be repaired or worn safely without risk of losing the diamond. Other jewelers offered to put the diamond in a new setting, or even an Art Deco style setting. For me, this wasn't enough. My mother inherited this ring directly from her grandaunt, and she had worn it every day of her life until swelling in her knuckles has made it impossible to wear her rings anymore. So this ring's appearance is very much tied up with my memories/feelings for my mom. Fortunately, she's still with me! :-) So I did a lot of research on the internet and found Crane Jewelers. Kevin Crane is an amazing craftsman. He not only repairs jewelry, but he also is open to extremely odd requests, like the time he made clear quartz lenses for a 1 1/2" wide pair of antique gold eyeglasses I brought him. He made a miniature brooch for me out of a 1/3" tall cameo. He made a miniature freshwater pearl necklace for my dollhouse, incorporating the tiniest clasp in the world, he engraved our family's name on a 1" tall door knocker. Do you know of any other jeweler who would (or even could) do this kind of work for you? Kevin also expertly repaired an heirloom vintage brass bowl for us (it looks fantastic on the mantle in our living room), reattached the silver feet on my vintage peacock brooch, and has PERFECTLY repaired an assortment of jewelry for me. I know of no other jeweler in the Seattle area who is as capable of meeting a creative challenge as is Kevin Crane -- you will never be disappointed with his workmanship! My engagement ring is "antique" looking and I was having difficulty finding a wedding band that went with it. I went to Crane to have them make my band. It was actually less expensive than buying a pre-designed one. We had multiple meeting about what I wanted and then they made a mold for the ring to show me what it would look like. They used my engagement ring to copy the engraving all the way around the band. It is stunning and one of a kind. I highly recommend using them for custom jewelry.
