Our trip to Crane Brewing began on an adventurous note. A moonless night, Google maps led us down a zig-zaggy street that grew progressively darker, amongst barren buildings, until I was convinced we were being lured to our demise by some sort of Huldra worshipping Scandinavian cult. My wife bravely encouraged me to press on and, much to my relief, we arrived at the happy and well lit Crane brewpub. The first thing I noticed was the outdoor seating area facing the serene woods. Turns out the Rock Island trail passes directly in front. I would definitely go running more often if I could get a refreshing IPA halfway through. I feel healthier already. The interior was a cozy space filled with cool wooden tabletops along with a sprawling bar. The bartender/server/busser was super friendly and personable, a notch above the usual brewpub servers, and several notches above record store/head shop employees. Ugh, they're the worst. There is something on tap for all level of connoisseurs, including barley wine. I got two beers, both IPAs. The Playground Politics was outstanding, the Farmhouse IPA maybe not so much. Anyway, high accolades for Crane, the little brewpub at the end of the lane. read more

My husband and I headed to Crane Brewing after a nice hike on Blue River Trail. This brewery is pretty unassuming from the outside, but packed with charm (and yummy brews, according to my husband) on the inside. Trying to get to Crane Brewery can leave you wondering if Google Maps got confused. It's pretty off the beaten path. Once you arrive, the exterior, although a bit 'warehouse-y' and industrial, hints at the awesomeness within. The interior is pretty great, striking a nice balance between cozy and cool. When we were there, it wasn't too busy/loud, which was perfect so we could enjoy our conversation without having to yell. The servers were not only knowledgeable about the beers, but also very friendly and helpful. We felt comfortable asking for recommendations and chatting about the bikers who come in off the trail. Speaking of the trail...the proximity to the bike trail seems like a stroke of genius. But it turns out that the brewery was actually there before the trail - they just got lucky and the new trail morphed into a steady stream of business from its bikers. Overall, Crane Brewing is pretty awesome - it's definitely a destination worth visiting...and pedaling to!! read more

I stopped by Crane while visiting the area, and had a great experience. It was a quiet Thursday afternoon, but the bartender, Charlie, was personable and chatted with me while I was there. He gave me some great recommendations for other breweries to check out (besides Crane, of course) as well as local bbq recommendations. The beer was solid - it was a bit heavy on hazy selections due to a hazy promo they were doing, but there were plenty of other styles to choose from. The food consisted mainly of premade sandwiches and appetizers, but they were fresh and warmed up when ordered. The Cuban and soup were great, and better than most pub food offerings. All in all, Crane is a good brewery with friendly staff, a solid variety of beer styles, and a small but tasty selection of food. I'd recommend any beer snob check it out when in the area, and hopefully you'll have Charlie pouring beers and chatting with you. read more

Fun tasting hall with great staff and local events. We came on Wednesday and they were setting up for trivia. It got pretty busy as the game was starting, so it must be pretty popular with the locals. My brother got their Tea Weiss sour and his gf ordered one of the seasonal sours. Both seemed happy with their choices. I tried the Odd Bird, which was delicious and I felt pretty proud of those Kansas sourced Hops! I also tried one of their stouts which was listed as Horchata inspired. It was good, but I'm glad I only got it in a 5oz. The paninis looked amazing, but we had just had dinner down the street so we'll have to be back for them. The staff were really friendly and attentive. Even as the local crowd started to pour in, they did a great job of checking in with us and getting new orders as needed be. Their much was tempting, but I stayed strong in my guarding of the wallet! I have been to crane many times and they have really expanded their beer styles. I like how they haven't changed too much in the taproom even when they have grown so much in distribution and popularity. I think they have recently been bought out but the new owners are keeping everything consistent and still holding the unique events that the original Crane owner did which is good to see. Their latest Ted lasso pop up was really fun and it's cool to see how they do bike trail events as well. I am more impressed on how their quality and styles have improved as they have expanded. read more

I was really excited to finally get a chance to visit the Crane Brewing tap room recently on a trip to Kansas City because I've loved their beers for years now. (Unfortunately all the tea Weiss we stocked up on was accidentally left in our friends beer refrigerator when we drove back to Omaha but I'm sure they're enjoying!) We happened to stop in on a Saturday afternoon during some kind of biking rally (bicycles, that is) since the trail is just nearby. With plenty of outdoor seating and open garage doors there were no concerns over ventilation either. I've had several beers from Crane Brewing now and I must say I really enjoy their beer! The Dry Hopped Orange Gose was a great beer that we enjoyed this summer and the dry hopped and orange flavor profile was a perfect pairing! Another beer that I feel like mentioning is the Shock beer which was a fruited beer with blueberries and lactose. This beer proved not to bee too sweet unlike some fruited beers and was an excellent beer to relax to. Guys, I'm not even a beer person yet I'm giving 5 stars. That says something. This small town brewery is family and locally owned right in the KC metro. The Crane family has a wonderful story they tell when giving tours (every Saturday) of their facility. It's worth the listen you guys. If you need something to fill your Saturday's with, this is it. A warm welcome when you arrive from the lovely bartenders; a long list of sour beers, ipa's, and all the beers you can think of, plus some yummy frozen cocktails; and sometimes even kitties that roam the place. Crane brewery has spent the last 7 years growing from the KC metro to the surrounding states, and it's no surprise why. The facility is clean, the beers are tasty, the bar is loaded with board games and there's a taco truck outside as well. Check this place out! While you're at it, go ask Mr. Crane for some stories. This is a fun location right off the bike path, so would be a great place to stop along a bike ride. Although the outside seating did get a dust storm on a windy day. We stopped in just to pick out a 6 pack and they kindly helped us and let us sample our picks. Great service! Good mix of IPAs, porters and sours all with good flavor! Of all the microbreweries of the KC landscape, I think Crane Brewing Co. might be the most unique. For one, they have been on the sour beer train for way longer than anyone else (including the big fish, Boulevard) and there's no limit to their local collabs. Want a Tea Weiss with locally made Hugo Tea, a Berry Weis, or a Gose on a hot summer day? You're in luck. What's cool to me is that I always thought of Crane's Sour selections, but their portfolio is more diversified than that. They have Farmhouse Ales, Brown Ales, IPA's, on down the line. If you're into seasonals and specialties, they won't disappoint and will bust out some surprisingly delicious brews. Beyond that, their space is really cool and again ties back to the unique theme. It's not nestled in the Crossroads, but instead brings some life to the Raytown neighborhood. On a summer night, with the sun setting behind the trees and the gravel crunching beneath your tires as you pull in? Nothing better. And the very last thing I'll say: These guys are ALWAYS involved in the community and I personally feel they're brand is so strong because of it. I am always telling people that Crane is one of, if not my #1, favorite brewery in KC. I first got hooked at a Yelp event several years ago when they were very new. Since then, they have grown and established themselves in the most amazing way! I love that they specialize in sours but have a variety that exceeds well beyond just sours. Their new bar area is colorful and exciting and their branding/creative for each beer is SO FUN. That's my advertising brain speaking! During the Covid -19 crisis, I've been trying to put my money where my mouth is (generally behind a mask) and go out of my way to support local businesses. This weekend, I made that long overdue journey out to Raytown to visit what I have considered the true artisans of the local beer scene - Crane Brewing. I have been to a Crane tasting at a local liquor store and brought cans and bottles home on many occasion, but I had never sat foot in their tasting room until yesterday. Like a true artist, Crane pushes the envelope and sometimes they miss the mark - or I should say - I can't grasp their level of experimentation in such products as the Tea Weiss or the Beet Weiss; but i also don't "get" some Picasso's or Dali's. The Tasting Room bar has been transformed into a product showcase for carry-out only. The space is exquisite and is probably the most natural and inviting environment of any taproom in town. Lots of re-purposed wood with neutral and dark natural colors along with the use of their iconic origami branding incorporated throughout provides an upscale mountain cabin ambiance, far removed from the industrial building in a secluded space in a first-ring suburb. I took home a 32 oz crowler of Mango Lassi, and six pack's of Farmhouse IPA, and Apricot Weiss. All very distinguishable with potent flavoring - hoppy to fruity sour. The other great thing about Crane is that they have opened their space to other entrepreneurs such as Harp BBQ on Saturdays (someday I'll get there) and Cuento Coffee also roasts, sells and distributes from this space. While I love visiting breweries when I travel, I have never really delved into our own local breweries outside of KC proper. I have really been missing out by not going to Crane. While I knew that they focused on sours, I had no idea the extent of the beers they would have in their tap room. Finding this place is sort of an off road adventure, but absolutely worth it. I wasn't sure I was even in the right spot until I saw the food truck outside. I got a flight of sours and a beet beer which absolutely knocked my socks off. What the heck am I drinking??? Am I really drinking beer??? Yes, I can't believe it is beer, and it is amazing. Start your experience by finding an out of sight location. That is where this hidden gem is located. Enter through the unsuspecting door and you find an empty office space. Keep going straight, open that next door, and you may be greeted by a cat. It is almost like entering someone's urban living room. Look around and you find the bar counter is to your left as well as an array of beautifully designed products for sale. Great, now what to try? My favorite is the Tea Weiss, but everything I have tried has been fantastic. All of the beers taste exactly as described, and boy are those sour beers citrusy. I am not a huge fan of beets, but I can keep coming back for the Beet Weiss. The guys here somehow found a way to make it taste good. I am almost able to trick myself into thinking I am getting my daily recommended dose of fruits and veggies here. If you have trouble deciding, it is ok. The guys at the counter are super passionate and knowledgeable. No food served here. The guys here are focused on making good beer. If you are hungry, there may be a food truck outside from which you can order food and bring inside. Or just do not come hungry. Crane has distinguished themselves in the sour beer niche. Im seeing them pop up more and at my local watering hole. I went straight to the source this time around, started with their lightest on tap, oatmeal saison, tasty, and a good summer brew option. Tea Weiss caught my eye next, Hugo tea gives a fruity slightly sweet and amazing whiff of brew. Last I went for the Omar porter, deep rich coffee notes made it my favorite of the visit. So by now if your still reading, I've just admitted I wasn't actually brave enough to try the kumquat or grapefruit sour brews. Just gives me a reason to go back is all. Tricky to find, snarky bar men, eclectic but low key vibe make it a above decent option if your in Raytown. The uniqueness of what their tapping though really make it worth a drive to check out what everybody is talking about. I sense a cult following ensuing. read more

My wife and I have become huge sour beer nerds. Ever since having our first one a few years ago, sours are our staple beer. A couple years ago, Crane beers appeared on the scene, and we were thrilled to have a local brewer doing beers in our favorite style. We've enjoyed several of their offerings, but had never actually made the drive from Lenexa to Raytown. That changed last Saturday, when we took some fellow beer-loving friends on a brewery crawl. A bit off the beaten path, Crane is tucked away down what looks to be a dead-end, quasi-industrial part of town. Google maps had no trouble finding it, so just trust your gps! Once inside, we perused the tap list and bottle offerings. I had hoped to find a new beer I've seen them tweeting about, but it's not out yet. Still, I ordered one of my favorites (Tea Weiss) and we settled into a table across the room from the bar. Friendly service and terrific beer? What more could you want? Crane isn't exclusively a sour beer brewery...they do other styles, notably saisons and IPA's, but they really know how to make a quality sour brew. A personal favorite is their bizarre Beet Weiss (yes, that's "beet" - as in, red, earthy root vegetable). Trying to describe it is a bit impossible; you just need to experience it. It smells like delicious cooked beets, but tastes like wonderful pickled beets. Most of their sour beers are fairly low ABV, so you can enjoy more than one. They also offer flights so that you can sample several of their offerings in smaller servings. We will be back, and always on the hunt for whatever new concoctions Crane offers up! read more
