Rabbit Rock Park - Lots of routes to the top of rabbit rock

Rabbit Rock is a good-sized rock formation near Big Flats Wisconsin, and one of many in this area…read more The parking lot has had some work done recently, so it's much nicer than it was before. Not quite as impressive as Roche-A-Cri, but still a fun (and free!) stop.

There's lot of little routes to the top; some a little more adventurous than others; depending on your courage and activity level. The jutting rocks form a rabbit at the top. Some others have decided to decorate the rocks with other art too. There were lots of kids venturing around the formation peeking in to the cracks and hearing their voices echo in the caverns. There's lot of trees lining the rock trails to help you maneuver around. The weather was great for a hike to the top. Watch for leaves and pine needles, as these make the trails a little slick. This would be a great lookout place for sunsets and a picnic. There are tables at the parking lot area. I didn't see any bathrooms though. I don't think you need a park pass to use this park either. This was a perfect way to spend an hour! But the wayside is NOT open year round it's closed during the winter months. From the top of the rock you can see for mile including view of Roche-A-Cri Mound in the state park. It's about 60 feet high to the top.

Definitely best way to beat the crowds and relax at a quieter campground before the hype of the school year starts up. While the sites look and feel the same as the ones at Devil's Lake, there are far fewer sites and it is much more peaceful. The sites themselves are really well kept. Our little site was still able to fit three cars in the driveway, two full tents and a sunshade. The campground features a massive field, covered family Pavillion and little playground. Really nice way to burn off some energy away from the sites if you're not hiking or sit and have lunch at one if the many picnic tables. Two grills available as well. You can't get better camping showers than I've experienced outside of Mirror Lake! They're all private entrances and have a seperate area behind a partition to put your bag/towel/clothes with a bench. Great hot water and pressure. Seperate bathroom area that is extremely well maintained too. Huge plus! While there aren't a lot of trails, the hiking isn't at all strenuous and has beautiful views of the rock formations along the way. Sturdy walking shoes still required. Personally I wouldn't swim in the water as its a little murkier, although it is so lovely to venture around. You're able to rent kayaks for the best experiences it seems so we'll be doing that next year! I highly recommend taking a break from life at Mirror Lake for camping and relaxed hiking! Can't wait to go back.

This was my first time camping* in a county park, and it was enjoyable but definitely different…read morethan my previous experiences at state parks. For my stay at Petenwell, I use camping broadly as I had the opportunity to stay in a large and amenity-filled camper. Hook-ups for water and electricity at the site allowed for a fridge and freezer, a flush toilet and shower, and air conditioning. Not a bad set-up! For $250 a month you can leave your camper there and come and go as you please. As far as the park itself, it's well maintained, has a nice office where you can be ice and firewood and play pool and video games, has direct access to the lake, a sandy beach, and a kind, neighborly atmosphere. People roam the grounds on bikes and walk their dogs, and many have set up decorations and benches and made themselves a home away from home for the summer. What I wasn't expecting was how close together the campsites are - my past camping experiences have had sites divided by trees and some privacy; here you are pretty stacked. There is an open field for people to pitch tents, and our camper area was also a bit of a free for all. We lucked out, though, and our hosts were able to set up in a shady spot along with some other friends to create a large space between the campers with a fire pit and picnic tables that discourages others from setting up in the space. Despite the close quarters, the camp is surprisingly quiet. The most disruption came from all of the chirping birds at 4 in the morning - a much more welcome sound than screaming kids or drunk revelers. Bring some ear plugs and you'll be good to go!

Beautiful place. Easily the best swimming hole in Wisconsin - and it offers a unique geography that…read moreis extremely rare to find anywhere else in this state. I absolutely recommend checking it out. If you do, however, take some precaution. The locals are pretty butt-hurt about this place. They like to whine and moan about the increase in traffic and how it is "ruining" it. Yes - if you go on a weekend in the middle of summer, it will be pretty crowded. Frankly - I don't think the increase in people ruin the place. If anything, having a larger crowd makes it more fun. It's nice to sit by the waterfall and watch the dumb kids jump 20-30 feet off the cliff walls into the deep water below. It's also nice to have more people around so if you DO get hurt on accident (there are no railings near the cliffs), there are plenty of people around to call 911. I went on a scorching hot Sunday afternoon and there were a lot of folks there, but not enough to "ruin" it. If you want to go when there are fewer people, go during a weekday. I once went and practically had the whole thing to myself. However, if you do dive, take note: it is REALLY REALLY dangerous and actually illegal (if you are caught, it's a $600 fine). When we were there, some kid hit the rocks after diving and broke his leg pretty bad - fire rescue was called out and apparently it happens all of the time. I've never jumped off the cliffs and I still manage to have fun every time I go. So if you do go out there, be extremely careful. Don't do anything stupid. You can enjoy the place without jumping off the edge - no matter what your idiot friends are telling you. Also, be respectful of the land. A lot of people were smoking (cigarettes, pot), playing music, throwing trash around, and my sister was even attacked by someone's dog. Some redneck hippie chick brought her newborn baby to the place - stupid idea. Don't trespass on the nearby cornfield - be respectful. Don't litter. Don't throw your cigarette butts in the water. Don't bring glass beer bottles. Just be nice - you may think you're cool by getting plastered and jumping off the dangerous cliffs, but you're actually NOT. Also, be warned. Baraboo has a pretty unfriendly way of deterring tourism from their town. If you park along the road, or even park anywhere that is NOT the parking lot (which only holds 7-8 cars), you will be towed. It's $200-$350 towing bill depending on the towing company. Apparently, as of two weeks ago, they didn't enforce the parking laws that often. It was only a $10 ticket and they never towed anyone. Now they tow cars left and right. Jerks. Anyway - have fun! Be safe! And for the love of Pete, don't litter. Channel your inner tree-hugger and leave only footsteps.
