I have to say that the Elting Memorial Library, New Paltz's town library, is perhaps the best library we've visited in New York to date! The building looks unassuming from the outside, with the dainty white exterior blending perfectly into the quaint downtown setting that would fit seamlessly into a set for a community theatre production of "The Music Man". But step inside, and you'll find shelves upon shelves of a vast selection of fiction and nonfiction, plus ample seating on cozy chairs and couches to curl up and read the day away! The folks that work at this library are some of the friendliest we've met in all our journeys, and be sure to snap a picture with the moose mascot before you leave! If you're anything like us and love the experience of visiting a great library, no trip to New Paltz is complete without a trip to the Elting!

Alas, I did not have my library card on my person...I did have my bank debit card with my name but this was not worthy of establishing my identity according to the librarian. She even said to me "I don't know you" a la Mariah Carey (Made my day!) and gave me the door. Due to a fire several years ago, the library recently underwent major renovations and looks brand spanking new. There are two floors full of books and DVDs, and the rooms are bright with lots of light and wooden floors. There were plenty of folks sitting in chairs and reading and also a bunch in a back conference-like room. If you enjoy fishing and ukuleles, you're in luck. Ukuleles are available to borrow, and the Phoenicia Library also has the unique Jerry Bartlett Memorial Angling Collection which is worth checking out, on the second floor. We spoke with a couple of librarians, and they were quite friendly and helpful. There is a bathroom off to the side of the circulation desk. Offering lots of books and activities, if I lived in Phoenicia, I'd be a regular fixture at the library, no doubt.

The library is a bit smaller than some of the others (then again, we're spoiled by the vastness of the Mahopac Public Library), but doesn't skimp on book selection and friendliness of the staff. This is also an excellent place to visit with children - their youth section is robust and it always seems like there's some fun programming for kids going on whenever we visit. The Howland Public Library is a definite asset to the Beacon community, and a must-visit to add to your list when you're in town!

The Hunter Public Library is a School District Library chartered in 1896. It has a distinct old…read moreworld charm with many of the books we fondly remember. It also has the latest fiction, computers, public wifi, and extensive online resources including materials for college preparation, genealogy studies, and language instruction. The new book section is full of great finds. The library offers English as a Second Language, watercolor classes, story time, and many other special programs. Their kids book section is beautifully arranged. The local paper is always on one of the round wooden tables, and there are lots of magazines to read. The sunlit back room is a great place to do a project and gaze at the Schoharie Creek. You might find a book to keep on booksale days. There's always something of interest such as student and local art displays in the library's two large show windows overlooking Main Street. Check it out!

I don't really like the noise policy which enables one loud person to largely ruin the quiet environment for all others trying to read or study. Workers act irritated and annoyed to answer simple client requests. There's a large parking lot. The budget draws 2 million a year from taxpayers and it seems the high cost derives from excessive fees for digital subscriptions which large Silicon Valley corporations charge local libraries. It's shameful. Hours are limited.
