So, as I mention ad nauseam, I have several children. I have visited many a paint your own pottery…read moreplace over the years and have MANY creatively painted monsters, mugs, princesses, mermaids, etc. When I first visited this particular place, I appreciated the wide variety of things to paint, and the decent amount of space to do so. I did find it to be more expensive than other studios I have been to, and I need a few more cheap, small pieces for my toddler to throw paint on. The choices for the older ones were solid. What pushed me into fandom was the classes offered by the studio for adults on occasion. I came to pain a tray, not really knowing what to expect, and the casual but supportive attitude put me at ease. Everyone had questions, and the studio owner patiently answered each one. She checked in with all of the "artists" frequently- offering help, but not being overbearing. And even as the two hour workshop creeped towards 4 hours, she didn't rush anyone to finish. It was very well done, and I would attend another.

Super fun experience this afternoon at Gleam & Glimmer stained glass studio. I love Victorian…read morethings, one of my Victorian type loves is stained glass. I started looking around Buffalo for a class on how to do stained glass and found this studio online. I thought it would be fun to try to learn how much work goes in to making a stained glass piece. The piece we did in class today was a lantern. It was a very fun and educational way to see a small bit of what goes in to making stained glass art. We did not need to do any glass cutting or grinding, that was done for us. Thank goodness, as a beginner I would have wasted so much glass trying to get it right. So, the pieces to solder together are all ready for you. I won't go in to the specifics of how to solder glass together, but it was a very manageable thing even for a beginner. There was plenty of teachers/workers around to give tips and all the fellow students in the glass were more experienced than me and were more than gracious to give me tips as I went. I was honestly very excited to use the soldering iron. My husband prefers to not let me use power tools at home so I was really, really excited to be encouraged to use the soldering iron here. I felt like Martha Stewart and it was a good thing. Did my lantern turn out perfect? No, I can see the parts where I should have soldered smoother. But did I learn a lot and did my soldering improve as the class went on? Yes, yes it did. This is like all crafty things and the more you do it, the better you will get at it. My husband was very impressed with the lantern I brought home, he was amazed I made it. It was a super fun class and I would recommend any one who wants to learn about making stained glass take one of the beginner classes here. They also have some stained glass works/pieces for sale here, in addition to the classes. They had a shop cat, Shadow, who was very friendly and social. I love cats, so I was delighted to see him. If they ever have any classes making cat stained glass art, that would be so far up my crazy cat lady alley. Watch their facebook page for updates when they offer different classes or check their website.

Two notable differences from other potters: 1. The glazes include colors like I've not seen, bright and colorful and 2. The inclusion of slab formed mugs. The attention to detail is evident from the inside color of the mugs to the carefully formed handles. Note, there are many beautiful glazes that are not colorful as well, more traditional blues and earth tones. I bought a cheerful mug as a tribute to my late rescue Maltese. I will remember the happiness he brought me over 15 yrs when I have coffee every morning in my new favorite mug. There are other pieces to choose from, and anyone would delight in a gift from Black Raven. Stop in and check out this local artisan.

I came across the brunch even online via Facebook. Right away I followed the link and purchased my ticket for a Sunday event. It was quick and easy. The day of the event I arrived a few minutes late but it was no big deal. Finding the venue was a little tricky. It's of those things where if you blink, you'll miss the entrance. It only took a few moments to figure it out. Once inside it was small but cozy. There were 18 people attending the brunch and we started right away. I really enjoyed the class. We were given cute glasses with a buffalo on them and the mimosas were served. Brunch was comprised of bagels, coffee cake and scones from Panera. It was a nice spread and we were welcome to help ourselves to the spread of food. Our instructor Mo, was very nice and bubbly. She was extremely patient and kind. She never hesitated to repeat a step even if it was for the 27th time. She came right over and showed everyone over and over. She made learning fun and easy. I would love to take another class with her for sure. She's a great teacher. The space was a little tight for the blankets were were making but I really enjoyed chatting with the other people and getting to know them. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for more events.
