It'd been a loooong time since my last haircut. In my extensive search to find the best place to…read moreget my locks trimmed in Iowa City, I stumbled upon Nova Salon. I didn't have a specific stylist in mind, so I was matched up with Irina. I believe I called on a Wednesday and was able to get an appointment for a few days later. I was Irina's last appointment on a Saturday afternoon, but you never would have known. She was very friendly, listened to what I had to say, and gave lots of great advice. I left with the exact haircut I asked for. Have I been able to style it the way Irina did? Heck no. That requires talent I simply don't have. Irina taught me a lot about my hair - what to do with the random grays that make an appearance, the type of hair I have, etc. Seriously, what she taught me was totally worth the price paid; aside from the actual haircut itself. The salon is super clean and inviting. Lots of natural light, especially at Irina's station because of where she's located. They do sell hair products including Amika (which I personally like). I had no idea how much it was going to cost (around $75 with tip) for a women's cut, as prices aren't posted online. I suppose I could have asked when I scheduled my appointment, but it didn't really matter to me. I'm someone who gets her haircut 1x per year. Recommend. I'll definitely make a return visit.

They both take time and do not rush through their work. The quality of the stylists is outstanding and the atmosphere is very positive and lively with good music. This is important if you require a 3 hour appointment as I do. Tim and Allie are both very receptive to ideas and positively encouraging change. When my daughter wanted a pixie cut and 2 stylists at our previous salon wouldn't do it and tried to talk her out of it, we decided to try Buzz. Tim was so excited to work through this style change with her and it made her very confident about this choice. The prices are a bit higher than some other local salons, but I will not go anywhere else. You get what you pay for - both in the services and the beautiful, wonderful experience.

Not to mention that they went above and beyond to get in my mother (grandmother of the bride) who had forgotten to get a hair appt. Last minute-zero issues. I know they cannot always do that, but I really appreciated their efforts. 5 stars.

It has always been easy to schedule appointments, too. As a guy, it can be difficult to find someone that has a good idea of current "hip" hairstyles/trends for men. The price is the only (slightly) sore spot - but, you get what you pay for. Highly recommended!

One of the trickiest things about moving to a new city is finding someone you can trust to take…read morecare of your hair. When I moved to Iowa City from L.A. a few years ago I was faced with this daunting task. And, not to be a complainer, but it is extra daunting for me because I have a ridiculous hairline (and cowlicks) that that naturally grows into a mullet. Literally, each week after an amateur cuts my hair I lose a few perceived IQ points based on how my hair grows out. Lucky for me someone I trust (who has nice hair) recommended Michael Tschantz salon to me and I found not only one stylist that I can trust, but I found an entire salon full of them! To be clear, I generally see Katie J. or Mike and they both do a fantastic job on my hair, but since I tend to procrastinate when making appointments I've ended up at one time or another seeing pretty much everyone there, and they have all been able to tame my not-so-simple hairline. The salon is in Iowa City, so depending on where you live it might be a bit out of the way (I'm looking at you, Coralville) but, trust me, it is well worth 10 minutes in the car to have consistently awesome hair. Not to mention the fact that the best Mexican food in town is close by (La Michoacana), which is a big bonus. My wife also goes to Michael Tschantz and she gets the whole 9 yards, cut, color, and etc. and I swear her hair looks better than it did when she paid twice as much in L.A. before we moved.
