We had a wonderful time at Coyote Ridge Stables. The horses were calm and well mannered, and the mules were a highlight with their quirky, funny personalities. April and Gomer had so much character, and Tanner the horse gave us a smooth, enjoyable ride on the trail. The ride was relaxed with snack stops where the animals enjoyed the green grass in the high desert. We also had two dog companions, one leading and one bringing up the back, which made us feel well protected the entire time. We learned about local plants along the way, which made the experience even more special. Highly recommend for a fun, thoughtful, and memorable ride. read more

After getting lost with my GPS I called Sue who came and picked me up so I could do the ride. I did the 1 hour trail ride and it was incredible. The wildflowers were everywhere and the views of the mountain were just beautiful. Sue not only rescued me, but was so kind when I ran everything a bit later than planned and she shared great stories with our group, info about the land and horses and history. As someone who has experience riding at countless different stables, Coyote Ridge Stable is one of the best I have ever been to. The biggest praise they deserve is how clean, well kept, and happy their horses are! You can tell the staff love what they do, especially our guide Robyn. The pricing is worth it, the view is breathtaking, and you get to feed the horses carrots. The stable provides you water and a place to store small items such as your phone, etc, on the horses. Not only are they professional, but they make you feel warm and welcomed. This was the ideal. Great people with great animals, in a great place. I could not recommend this horseback riding experience more. It wouldn't be too much to say that from the moment we arrived it felt like we were transported into an oasis where we could finally relax, breathe, and slow down a bit. Despite arriving late- Sue accommodated us and the kids had a great time. Landscape we rode through was amazing. The horses were mostly easy going - but still felt like a real horseback ride. Definitely read the instructions and be prepared that the last half mile or less is on a dirt road. Allow some extra time in case you get lost. My husband, 11yo daughter, and I had a fantastic experience on an hour ride with Sage. We were lucky to go right as the wild flowers were in bloom. Sage made sure we all felt comfortable on our horses and was very knowledgeable about the wild flowers. Of the handful of rides we've done in the past 2 years in So Cal (SLO, OC, Idyllwild), this was our favorite because we weren't in a big group where we felt like we were being herded along. Five friends and I joined Sue and her horses and mules for the Quail Canyon ride today. Most of our group were beginners, and the horses and mules were calm and sweet. Sue was a great guide, friendly and patient, and everyone had a wonderful time. The canyon trail was easy; the terrain and landscape were beautiful. Shout-out to our new equine friends: April, Sister, Gus, Bridger, Homer, and Sierra! :) Other notes: - Make sure you check out the directions posted online on their website. Google Maps got us there just fine, but it doesn't hurt to have the extra info. - Plan for some extra time before/after your ride. My husband and I went on a 2-hour private sunset ride with Sue and it was absolutely perfect :) I'm an idiot and did NOT follow Sue's directions (even though she was crystal clear that if you didn't follow her directions you would get lost). Nope, I didn't follow the directions and I did get lost AND almost stuck in my Honda Fit. I called Sue and told her about my huge mistake and she was so cool and understanding and came and rescued us from the hill in her truck and brought us to the stable. Coyote Ridge Stables is a beautiful property with wonderful dogs and cool things to check out. I rode April and my husband rode Gus and these beautiful horses were a dream. The ride was gorgeous at sunset and Sue was a wonderful conversationalist and guide. We learned a lot about the area and had such a great time. Sue is amazing! I wanted to plan a horseback ride and proposal over the holiday and found Coyote Ridge due to their great reviews. Sue and I began coordinating weeks in advance and unlike some other rude or non-responsive stable owners I spoke to she was receptive to my array of questions and from the beginning was so willing to help in whatever way she could to make the perfect proposal. I was able to come by the stable two days prior and Sue so patiently and enthusiastically helped me choose a spot, specific time of day, setup the (annoyingly numerous) props including candles, pictures hanging from trees, champagne, blanket, camera, music, etc. and even participated in a dry run. We texted over the next few days and Sue even went out of her way to pick up ice and a lighter, items I had forgotten to purchase in advance. On the day of, while we were out on our ride (which was also amazing - see below) Sue setup the proposal site again exactly as I had hoped, carefully incorporating every minor detail so that when we returned I only needed to get the (discreet) thumbs up and I would know we were ready to roll! My (now) fiance and I could not have been happier with the outcome and I can honestly say it was only made possible because of Sue! And on the ride itself, we went into the mountains as the sun was just starting to go down and not only was the scenery epic but it was made extra exciting but the two coyotes that were stalking us! Sue's nephew Sage was our knowledgable and engaging guide who made sure we were comfortable, had lots of laughs with, and we realized was also an expert photographer! This is one of the most positive experiences I've ever with a small business and could not recommend this stable enough! read more

Coyote Ridge Stable, I can't say enough about them! First of all, I called a bunch of other stables in the Palm Springs area... some didn't call me back, and some were just rude, and most were more than expensive. I called Coyote Ridge Stables, and Sue was amazingly friendly and helpful and honest. After she tried to find someone to take us out, she decided to stay late herself for an extra ride on a Sunday. She told me that they are very careful with Covid. We wore masks and washed our hands before we could even approach the stables. They clean as much as they can, and then we could take our masks off once we went in the trail. They have 2 of the sweetest dogs there too! Then Sage led us out in the ride, and he was informative and nice. He even went out of his way to take great pictures of us city slickers, lol. The horses were really well-behaved, and my son wasn't scared at all. We all had a great time! If my son had his way, we'd be back tomorrow read more

Just finished a 2 hour ride thru Morongo hills. Beautiful, quiet and remote. Sue is a wonderful wrangler and her horses are calm and do their job well. I rode Bridger and my husband rode Sister, great rides. The horses are very well cared for and so very healthy. It was also informative to learn about the flora and fauna of the region. Sue couldn't have been nicer. I highly recommend riding with her and a treat at the end of the ride, she provided us with carrots to feed the horses. read more

My 9 year old daughter and I had a fantastic ride with Sue and her wonderful, well mannered and sweet-natured horses: BB, Bridger and Hank! Not to mention, the Hank the dog, a perfect companion during our 2 hour tour at Sunset. I'm sure the morning ride is also amazing, but my kiddo and I are just not morning folks. What a fantastic experience! Sue makes sure you are safe yet doesn't press on a lot of the unnecessary 'rules' that keep you on pins and needles hoping you don't 'mess up'. Some rules "Lean forward when you horse pees to take pressure of the bladder." She knows her horses, and you can tell all of the animals are cared for with the utmost love and respect. She tells you enough of what you need to know for a safe and enjoyable ride. The result is that you feel completely calm, relaxed and comfortable with your kin and self in the saddle - so that you can enjoy the ride and take in the beautiful surroundings of the desert. I highly recommend the sunset, 2 hour tour! Definitely the highlight of our trip! Also, Coyote Ridge Stable is insured...you should check and make sure when seeking other options...just sayin! My perspective is based from over 10 different horse ride establishments from California to New Hampshire. p.s. Her "petting zoo" is just icing on the cake! p.p.s. TRUST the directions on the website. Do not try to be tricky and "Google map" intersections in the directions. Google doesn't even know where Rawson is. Seriously. Trust the directions and know that when you get on Rawson, you will be on bumpy, unpaved roads until you reach the house. Take all the proper turn in the directions. You will get there. Pass the place on the left with horses on the white gate and it will be soon there on the left. You will see a brown fence (big enough for cars to get through.) There will be a sign on the ground confirming the address painted on a rock. On the Right of the electronic gate is the 'people's gate where you will enter. Have fun! read more

It was really easy to find. My GPS took me right to her place, but the pdf directions she has on her website matched that perfectly. We had a great ride with Sue and her horses. None of us knew how to ride, but she made us feel comfortable and the horses knew what they were doing. The trails up the ridge across from the stables were wonderful. Even though it was only a few miles from Palm Springs, it felt like we were in the back country. I was especially impressed with the service. Initially, she said she was busy and recommended another stable, but when I said I'd tried them already and they were closed, she adjusted her schedule to take us for a ride. If I were to summarize my overall impression of Coyote Ridge Stable in one word, it would be "unprofessional." While the trail ride itself was OK, Sue has no idea how to run a business or act in a professional manner. We had arranged for a 2-hour private trail ride, and Sue emailed us directions to the Ranch. So far so good, right? Except when you actually get on Panorama Drive and look for the stable, it's not at all easy to find, and her directions are misleading at best and grossly erroneous at worst. For example, her directions state, "Go up to Panorama and go left", but this is incorrect. You do not turn left from Panorama, as the Ranch is ON PARNORAMA. While driving on Panorama, we went up a steep grade which was not suitable for a 2-wheel drive vehicle, after which, the street came to a dead end. We then turned back around and continued looking for the ranch. Her directions could have and should have warned us not to go up the steep, poorly kept grade. Upon calling Sue for assistance, she simply repeats her street address over and over again. It went something like this: "You have to drive on Panorama Drive and go to number 50639. Are you at number 50639? Keep going until you see number 50639. Are you there yet?" Sue mentions no landmarks, and nothing at all which visually describes her property. Her horses are not visible from the street, while horses from other ranches are. But here's the kicker: Her street address is not displayed in any way, shape or form! So she's on the phone, talking to us like we're idiots, telling us to go to an unmarked ranch with an unmarked street address. When we finally find the ranch, we notice a sign that is about 8" wide by 3" tall which says "Coyote Ridge Stable". Moreover, the sign is sitting on the ground at an angle which is almost impossible to see from the street. Clearly, Sue does not care to invest the minimal amount of time, effort and expense to elevate her sign or mark her property with a street address. All of this is extremely unprofessional. Sue was not personable at all. We have been on many trail rides, and most guides take the time to talk to their riders. Sometimes the talk is of horses, what we can expect on the ride, some suggestions on how to approach the ride given the terrain, and so forth. Sue did virtually none of this. She just got on the trail with Sally and her two dogs and we followed her as she and Sally made small talk. While the trail ride itself was OK, it was nothing spectacular to say the least. Sue took no initiative to actually lead us. In fact, she did not care whether her horse was in the lead, or one of ours. Alas, it was the most boring ride I've ever experienced, and the most expensive ($300 for a two hour ride for two people). Just a few days prior, we took a trail ride in Houston which involved a 10 year old girl having a temper tantrum and two non-paying tagalong riders, one of which kept complaining about the muddy conditions. However, the Houston trail ride was FUN! Why? Because the guide had positive energy, showed a genuine interest her riders, and actually cared about whether we had a good experience. Sue did none of these things, and the ride cost over twice as much. I love horses, and will not hesitate to take another trail ride while in the Joshua Tree area; just not from Sue. read more

We had 2 great rides with Sue. My 8 year old daughter had so much fun the first day she wanted to do it again. Sue gave us such a great experience both days, showing us the beautiful trails up into BLM lands that are quiet and empty besides hares, a snake and quail watching us ride by. Sue gave the perfect balance of tips, nature guide and horseman skills. Sue's horses are older but still have energy pep and back at the stable we loved her 2 dogs, mule, sheep and chickens. Sue made us feel comfortable and safe for the whole ride and was great to talk to. We want to go back soon! read more

I'd still be riding here if I still lived in California. As it is, whenever I visit, this place is a major goal. Sue & Sally run a quality establishment that can manage riders across a wide range of ages and sizes, and an equally broad range of experience levels. They can even manage the occasional jerk or dork (I've watched), despite California's regrettable limitations on management techniques for such creatures. Wonderful trail rides, understanding and talented guides who can educate you on riding technique (Hint: *LISTEN*), and a good array of options. My partner and I did a two-hour ride with Sue and loved it. We were in a group with a mom and her two daughters, and I thought she did a good job matching everyone up with an appropriate horse (even letting the Mom - who was carrying a high-end camera - ride her own personal horse so she'd have "a more stable photographic platform"), and making suggestions here and there on how to handle the horses. Sue was friendly and engaging without being pushy, and gave us a wonderful tour of the Morongo canyons. She also gave us great turn-by-turn directions for getting there. You will be on dirt roads for the last couple of miles, so do give yourself a little extra time to go slowly where you need to. read more

My wife and I had an amazing time with Sue today. It was my birthday and my wife picked out horse riding as the experience this year. Sue took us out on an early morning ride through Quail Canyon and she was the perfect guide! Our horses were affectionate and mild-mannered--Bridger and Homer--perfect for beginners like us, and Sue was so kind and affable that we instantly felt welcome. It began at the stable where Sue did a quick orientation and helped us up on the horses--my wife had never ridden one, but Sue helped her become confident and comfortable very quickly. My wife's nerves really just melted away--affectionate, cuddly Bridger was a perfect match for her. Homer, Sue's mule, had a lot of personality in the hour I rode him, which made the short trip even more fun. I think he had a whole branch hanging out of his mouth at one point! From there, we all three rode into the hills, the sunrise at our backs. We rode through the winding trail--Sue out front pointing out local wildlife and fauna, telling us a bit of history of the area. But she also let the ride fall into a comfortable silence at times as we all enjoyed the creaking of the saddles and the sun peeking through the morning clouds. The whole round-trip took a little over an hour, and the animals all took advantage of the cool, cloudy morning to come out and say hi--the quail, and the jack rabbits and cotton tails. Really couldn't experience the desert like this any other way. Once we made it back, my wife and I treated the horses to a few carrots Sue brought out. Her fun "labradork" Hank (I think) came out to join us, huffing and begging for some treats too while her other dog Yippa (I think) ran around and made sure we were all herded in the right part of the stable. Seeing all the animals together at the end, all of us a bit sweaty and dusty, was the perfect cap to a fun trip. The whole scene felt so homey and comfortable that it may be one of the best moments of the entire experience. It was hard to leave! It was a wonderful hour and a half of riding through the desert hills and mountains, and we couldn't have picked a better stable or a better guide than Sue. My boyfriend took me up to Coyote Ridge Stable this past weekend to ride horses. We went on a 2 hour horse ride with Sue and it was amazing! I didn't plan the trip, so I can't speak to that, but I was the "co-pilot" driving out into Morongo Valley and the directions from the website were very clear and easy to follow. Sue owns a beautiful property and you can tell she really cares for all of her animals. As soon as we got there, Sue greeted us- she was very friendly and laid-back during our entire visit. The horses we rode- Hank and Sonny- were awesome and very well trained! Both my boyfriend and I have little experience riding horses (I would definitely call myself a beginner), but Sue gave us the instructions we needed and then led the way. If you need step-by-step training and someone to hold your hand the whole time, this might not be the place for you. If you want someone who knows what they're doing, has extremely well-trained horses, and will make sure you have a safe, but enjoyable ride then Coyote Ridge stables is for you! Sue pointed out all sorts of plants and wildlife on our ride and even showed us some of her own animals after our ride. We definitely plan on going back and taking our friends! read more

I needed some horse manure to get my vege garden started and called several horse stables who all declined my request for some horse poop, until I called Sue, She was a bit surprised that anyone would want manure but horse poop is singularly the best soil improvement there is. She graciously accepted my request, upon my arrival she showed me the pile and I filled my truck, on my way out she greeted me at the gate and proceeded to pull out a dozen eggs out of her pocket.
