Contacted Maez Drilling to drive a shallow irrigation well in Los Lunas, NM. It was supposed to be simple: drive the well (we already had a NM State permit) - then set up a pump. Well was driven Jan 2025 - only ~26' deep, water was hit - water was tested - well was capped and the NM Office of the State Engineer (NM-OSE) paperwork was filled in, and handed back to Maez Drilling to file with the State. Then late June 2025, we received a letter from the NM-OSE saying that, "This office has not received a well driller's record for the permit issued to you...". Hence, the "permit" was cancelled and we had an illegal well, (not good in a dry state like NM!) I contacted NM-OSE and they said they'd never received anything from Maez - *and*, if we wanted our well to be in compliance, we'd have to pay another $125 to renew the permit!? I went to Maez Drilling office and they said they sent paperwork back in Feb. I asked for a copy of what they'd sent in Feb. After 20 minutes of "searching emails", they gave me a printed form saying, "...here's what we filed back in February." (Odd to search email for a driller's log that the State of NM requires to be submitted on paper with signature!??) The document they were trying to give me wasn't signed. I asked for a *signed* copy and they said they don't keep copies of the originals.(?) I then asked Maez Drilling if they were going to be responsible for the $125 permit fee if the State can't find the form. The lady refused to answer, and I left. About 20 minutes later, I got a call from the NM-OSE rep wanting to know what was going on. (I had called them earlier thinking the letter they'd sent me was a mistake.) We talked about the letter and the well, and about Maez Drilling. Then the NM-OSE rep and I looked at the "driller's log" that Maez claimed to have filed with the State. Turned out, the NM-OSE rep had an exact copy of the driller's log that I had because the *owner* of Maez Drilling had called him just *that* morning saying that they had some "office personnel changes" earlier this year and *SEVERAL* drilling logs hadn't been filed since early 2025. My driller's log was part of what he'd been sent just that morning. This meant that Maez *hadn't* sent the NM-OSE anything about my well *until* that very morning!! We looked closer at the form that Maez had given me, and had just sent to NM-OSE that morning. This driller's log wasn't even for our well!! Our well is a 26' driven supplemental irrigation well (no casing, no drilling - just a sand spike and 2 3/8" pipe), but the driller's log that they gave me, (and had *supposedly* submitted to the State), said it was a 235' rotary drilled well, and included a 4" PVC casing, mud and sealant!? So - NM-OSE had just received a copy of this "driller's log" just that morning!! - 5 months later - *and* it was complete fiction! The only thing correct was our names and address! My suspicion is that Maez Drilling tried to bluff me with an old driller's log - filled in our info while I waited - printed and handed it to me (and sent it to NM-OSE) - and expected me to go away. The NM-OSE rep is coming to inspect our supplemental well for himself. Pending that investigation by NM-OSE, and seeking some advice on our end - I'm sure this story isn't over. It sounds like there may be several other folks that may be caught in this mess that Maez Drilling has created. In the meantime - STAY AWAY FROM MAEZ DRILLING!!! Not trustworthy - not ethical - and you'll be stuck cleaning up the paperwork mess they leave behind.
