I am aware that there are Hard Rock Cafes in America but I've never stepped into a Hard Rock Cafe…read morebefore entering this one so I have nothing to compare it to. However, after a long vacation of not so great food all I wanted was a burger. I am not going to comment on the music or decor (besides saying it was terrible) as I am not the target demographic. But I will comment on the service. Our server was horrible. I think she might have been from America because she spoke with an American accent. Right after we ordered she went behind the bar and started whispering with her friend and rolling her eyes while looking over at our table. However, whenever she came to the table she was smiley and fake and tried to make conversation. When we first ordered two diet cokes and a ginger ale, she brought two ginger ales and a diet coke. She semi-apologized as though she had realized her mistake before getting to the table but since the had already opened the bottles, we decided not to complain. We all ordered burgers. They were alright in that I didn't get food poisoning but they were very bland. I probably would have gotten a better burger if I had gone to McDonald's or Burger King if that tells you anything. At the end of the meal, my mom ordered a water. Instead of bringing tap water, the server brought bottled water. This would have been a minor annoyance as tap water is free while you pay for bottled water. However, again she opened the bottle before coming to the table and she brought 2 bottles instead of one. At this point I was irritated and beyond giving her the benefit of the doubt. We paid for our mediocre meal and incorrect drink orders and left as quickly as possible to escape the horrible music.

Walking in felt like stepping back in time. I doubt much has changed about this place in decades, and that's entirely a compliment. We were seated near a window and the ambiance was everything you'd want, cozy, warm, and genuinely inviting. I loved the feel of it. Our server was very kind. Her English was limited, but she was gracious and patient as I attempted to speak German, and was generous enough to tell me I did well. It added to the charm of the whole experience. Now, the food. The potatoes that came with the schnitzel were the best German potatoes I've ever had. The schnitzel itself was delicious, exactly what you'd hope for. The cheese spaetzle was a highlight as well, rich and satisfying. Plan on sharing it. The one miss was the pizza my sister-in-law ordered, which was fine but felt out of place. Stick to the German classics and you won't be disappointed. Would love to return if I ever make it back to Heidelberg.

They check as appropriate and get what you need quickly. Our dinner was really good. We did have reservations. We even enjoyed some non-alcoholic beer. We had apple strudel for dessert, which was also really good. We were staying at the hotel, so just had to go upstairs after dinner. For the hotel - the only difficulty was the check in. We weren't sure where to go to check in. So we ended up asking the wait staff. We walked through the restaurant with our luggage to the the check in desk. Our room was comfortable and homey. The door required an old fashioned key to open. You can't beat the location being right by the old bridge.

Schnitzelbank is the highest rated restaurant in Heidelberg, and with just cause…read more We lucked out coming here around 1430 HRS because we just missed the lunch rush and just beat the early dinner crowd. The weather was beautiful for sitting outside. I wish I had gotten our server's name because he was outstanding. Friendly, witty, and willing to help navigate the menu - he made our dining experience even better. We started with a couple of local wines that were amazing - a red and a rosé. Some bread and butter came to our table with our escargot starter and side salad. The bread and starter were delicious. Our snails were hot and garlicky with plenty of juice to sop up. The side salad was also very tasty and fresh. For our mains I went with the Schnitzelbank Platter and my lady went with the Pepper Schnitzel. My platter came with a local delicacy called saumagen, as well as roasted pork, sausage, roasted potatoes, and sauerkraut. The saumagen was the highlight for me. Our server was also excited we got it. It is a local offering consisting of various meats and other items wrapped up in a stomach and served as a loaf-style meat. The pepper schnitzel was also outstanding - the sauce was indeed peppery, but it didn't smother the schnitzel, which was breaded nicely and not dry, as some schnitzels can be. And after all that food, still, an apple strudel. This was so worth it. I don't even like sweets in the USA, but in Europe, they are something else. This was something else. We had a lot of great meals on our trip, but this was probably the best. Not just for the food, but for the overall experience, it's easy to see why this is the shining star in Heidelberg.

The food was outstanding authentic German cuisine with a twist. The garlic Schnitzel is truly made for garlic lovers like me! The mushroom schnitzel had a flavor explosion when it hits your pallet. The wait staff was very friendly and accomodating, especially to Americans who don't speak German!
