Totally exhausted after spending an afternoon at Castle Heidelberg we were looking for a nice cafe, which isn't overrun by tourists. A task almost impossible, especially on weekends. But then some locals recommended the Max Bar, and it was perfect. It is located right at the market square, but once you enter you seem to be in another world. The walls are covered with stickers, posters and cut-out headlines. The music was from unknown origin, and I even didn't recognize some of the beers offered. The waitresses seemed to be busy with themselves, but it was ok. You don't go here to simply satisfy your thirst, you come to leave everything behind. I just wish it was always that easy. read more

We stopped in here on 2 separate occasions for drinks. Great patio seating and view of the main square if you want to be in on the action. Cheap drinks for happy hour. It reminded me a little of what I might also find in American bars, with the assorted, eclectic posters, cutouts, and memorabilia on the walls. I was in Heidelberg for the weekend with some friends and the on friday evening we dedided to go to Max bar(16.01.15) Ambiente: 4 stars Drinks: 2 stars Service: 1 star Friendliness: No stars at all!!! After 20 minutes waiting for 4 beers we became in a very unfriendly way 4 half full beers. A couple next to us too tired of waiting for a service just stood up and went away. We did the same after we quickly drank our beers. The bar itself is not bad at all, but the definitely have to do something about the service. I've experienced better places in Heidelberg.The other thing that you have to know is that it is permited to smoke in the bar. PS: I give 1 Star because i have, otherwise i would have given none! read more

Probably the best bar in the Altstadt. No, it doesn't have fancy long drinks. Yes, the waiters can be on guard - why not try being assertive? Go in there if you want to drink good beer and rant and rave for an hour or three. The environment in the Max Bar is like something out of a movie, it just doesn't get better than this. read more

The service is very rude, the waitress comes to you and stares at you without saying a word. The guy at the bar is also extremely rude, doesn't want to serve you and make you uncomfortable. We came once, not twice. read more
