My wife and I recently contacted Jeremy Jefferson of The Hired Hand to come out and give us an…read moreestimate for upgrading the motors and impellors in two of our bathroom exhaust fans and install a new fan in our master bathroom. Jeremy and his helper showed up at the house on time and took a look at the job. He quoted me $125-150 for the two fans upstairs and $150-200 for the master bath downstairs. I gave Jeremy the go-ahead on the costs and he got started. I should have known things were off when I went upstairs to test the work they completed and noticed they had wired the light and fan together where they were previously separate switches. I asked Jeremy why he did that and he told me he ran into a bad switch in each bathroom. I have since tested the switches and they worked just fine before they came out and now as well (the first lie). Jeremy and his helper were by this time totally focused on the master bathroom fixture and while they did get it installed in the process they ripped the sheetrock under the light cover and knocked the putty off of a nearby screw. I asked that they fix the damage and he said yes he would do it as it was part of the job and they would take care of it (second lie). Jeremy then spent hours calling Tech support for the fan company as he was unable to read or interpret the wiring diagram and instructions. He spent hours doing this and told me he was going to have to bring back his electrician from a nearby college to help him with this if he wasn't able to figure it out. I then joined a meeting as I was working from home and he approached my wife and told her I had agreed to pay them for the work before it was completed and pay their hourly rate even though the work was not completed (third lie). This prompted her to write them a check for $345 as I wasn't available to be interrupted at the time. Jeremy did commit that he would be back to finish the work (fourth lie). Over the next few days, I sent multiple text messages and left multiple voicemails for Jeremy and he didn't respond. When he finally did get back to me on Jan 9th he said he would be back out with an electrician to finish the work (fifth lie). My wife ran into them the same day in the mall parking lot in Goldsboro and they assured her that they had attempted to reach me multiple times (sixth lie). Jeremy also told her once they got a commitment from the electrician they would be back out (seventh lie). Thus far they have not contacted me or shown up to complete the work. I have now started a process through my bank for funds recovery since the work was not completed.

We had to start the entire process over and wait another 4 days before a new contractor could go out. Maybe contractors these days are making all the money they can, but this is not the way businesses should operate.

In June 2019, these folks did some fairly major renovations to my home. The quality of their work was excellent in all respects. They did what they said they would do, and they did it on time and on budget. So why am I writing these comments now, more than a year after the job was completed? Allow me to explain: A few days ago, I noticed a leak in a plumbing fixture that was clearly caused by a manufacturing defect. I called Pat Skelton, the new owner of Williams Home Center, and explained that I needed his help again. After describing the leak situation to him, his reply was immediate: "We'll take care of that," and they did--promptly--and at no cost to me. I fully expected to pay for this repair as Williams Home Center had already done their work more than a year earlier. What a pleasant experience it was for me to realize that there really are folks and companies "out there" who actually do stand behind their work. If you need home repairs or additions to your home, I recommend strongly that you consider Williams Home Center, Goldsboro, where professionalism and high-quality workmanship drive everything they do. Beyond that, they are just nice folks! Doug Burch
