For the past couple of years, our nephew and his other cousin have been students of Master Kim and Mrs. Candice. We've watched his levels of confidence and respect increase through the program(s). It was this building of character that encouraged us to put our own daughter into the studio. While martial arts is the root idea of the studio, the bigger picture is the development of the student- building them up, while utilizing physical and mental ideologies meant to nurture preexisting positive traits and improve that which is lacking. Herein, students are assessed and tested fairly and given every opportunity to succeed. They are treated like real people- as individuals working towards individual goals, in a team style environment. We've seen our daughter grow a ton in this studio. Her continued interest in the program has been the biggest surprise- she's young and usually easily distracted, but she WANTS to be involved in Hapkido! She's excited to go and wants to better herself. Her focus is improving and the physical outlet speaks for itself in these times! It should be noted that recently, Master Kim announced that he, himself has needed to step down due to health and family concerns. Longtime 2nd in command "Mrs. Candice" has taken over the studio and is already proving that she has the will and ability to continue Master Kim's teachings and the ideology of Hapkido to the the next generation of students. After seeing how important it was to the "new" managment (Candice had basically been running the place the entire time we've known her, so not really NEW) to provide continuity for longtime members, we had no reservations about allowing our daughter to pursue the next level of instruction under Mrs. Candice's tutelage. We are excited for what the future holds for our family at Kim's Hapkido- come out and see what the fuss is about!!!

Anyone from no experience to advanced is welcome to class and the community at East Side is wonderful! No big egos and the head coach/owner, Jose is mindful of partner pairing with someone that will take care of you. Everyone is nice and supportive for class making you feel comfortable to train! Kru Jose is an amazing head coach who has a passion for Muay Thai and an impressive portfolio of experience within the Muay Thai community! Jose coaches all classes and provides detailed instructions for class by a combination of learning styles for everyone. What I like the most is that there is accountability and structure for the class to elevate your level of training, and motivate you to push yourself to be better each time. The other coaches Summer and Zedd are also amazing at teaching and supporting the gym! Summer leads women's classes on Saturday mornings and supports intro/advanced classes too making a great impact on women who also train at the gym. I've been attending this academy for about two week now and I've enjoyed every minute of it. It's a…read moresmall family owned martial arts school and you can really feel that family atmosphere from the moment you walk in. Everyone here is so friendly and welcoming they make you feel like part of the team right away. The facility is clean and well maintained and you can tell they take pride in their space. Starting in 2026 they'll be introducing a dress code so everyone trains in the same uniform which I think is a great idea to build unity. Each class is about an hour long and for adults there's a sparring session afterward at no extra cost just people helping each other improve. It's been an awesome experience so far and I'm looking forward to continuing my training here.

You can enter the…read moreshopping center from several directions, such as from Kempsville Rd, Indian River Rd, and Kempsriver Dr. The road within the shopping center is Fordham Dr. My visit here was on September 14, 2025. The reason for the visit here that day was to celebrate my nephew's birthday. Many of his friends were there too. The storefront for the business is similar to how many other places are, but you can definitely see the big Ninja Warrior sign across the windows on the outside. After coming inside, there was a table area for everyone to sit. However, at that time, it was playtime for the kids. They were running through an obstacle course to try and beat their prior timed attempts. They were at this for quite a while, and it was fun to watch them try, especially after doing it awhile as you could tell they were getting tired out. I'd call that part mission accomplished. Once the obstacle course time was done, everyone came back to the table to celebrate my nephew's birthday. The staff were getting the next event set up during that time. Everyone had a great time with the cake. The second part of the play here involved the kids vs. adults. The lights were turned off, and it was basically like a Nerf War between them. I didn't do that part of it, but I did watch it all unfold. The kids were very quick to get the adults. There are several hiding areas to avoid getting caught or to sneak attack with the Nerf gun. There were also some mini snowballs you could throw around too. Once that part was done and the lights were back on, you could see everyone was tired out. Overall, this was a great place to have a birthday party. The staff were welcoming, and they were patient with the kids too. The atmosphere in here was tuned to the level of fun. They also have weekly summer camps and other offerings as well. There seems to be something for everyone here. If you are looking for a place to go for a birthday party or some other type of event, be sure to check this place out.

Decades later I was eager to continue that journey, but had nearly given up on finding the kind of school I was looking for. Martial arts instruction has changed a lot since the days of my youth. It's much more commercialized now. There are so many schools that will keep giving you belts as long as you keep giving them money, schools that focus more on their daycare than enriching the souls of their students or upholding standards. Honestly I found Kuniba Kai on a hail Mary google search, one last chance to find traditional karate before I opted to take up a different hobby altogether. I am so happy I stumbled across this dojo. Run by Mr. Estes, Kuniba Kai is as traditional as it gets with hard wood floors, and methodical, in depth instruction. Every nuance, every motion, every detail is conveyed and reinforced with deep roots in generations of martial arts history. There is not a rush to pump you through as many belts as you can get for money, at Kuniba emphasis is put on really understanding the principles at the right pace for you. In fact that is what makes Kuniba Kai so special. It's not about them, it's about you and making you the best you can be. It isn't easy. You will be pushed. You will be challenged. You will end class sore and tired and coated in sweat. And for that you will find perhaps a part of yourself that you didn't know existed; maybe the best part.
