The Union Auburn

I love living at the Union! Ive lived here the last 2 years and renewed my lease to live here again…read morefor my senior year. The fitness center is super nice and not overcrowded. The pool is super big and is quiet during the wweekdays but fun on the weekends. Ive made lots of friends with other people who live here at the events the Union does and they also do giveaways which is cool. It feels super safe which is important to me (especially as a girl). The office staff are super nice and helpful, especially since there is a new property manager since the whole disaster when the building first opened. I also noticed in the last 6 months or so that the maintenance of the Union has gotten SO much better. Prices are comparitive to places like the Standard, Uncommon or West and Wright but I think this is so much nicer and its so much quiter than being right in the middle of downtown by the bars. Overall, I love living here!

This is as honest a review as I can give, as rough as it may be. As of today I am in a room 15…read moredegrees hotter than the rest of my unit (maybe 80 degrees), effectively not air conditioned at this point. My sink and bathtub do not drain effectively, and my toilet regularly clogs. I do not use any waxy products and do not have long hair, so this has to relate to the plumbing itself. My room is the size of some closets I have seen and barely fits the bed itself let alone any furniture. The giant "speedbumps" in the parking garage serve to violently jar and shake my vehicle (yes, even when going at or below the prescribed speed) which I suspect has contributed to some suspension damage and alignment issues. I know of multiple instances of vehicles being improperly towed despite displaying a university issue hang tag (with no refunds). The parking spots are also too narrow for a full sized vehicle and only fit compact cars effectively. Regular "fire drills" (read: room searches) from the university admin serve to limit any amount of peace that could be attained here. The wifi has no password (read: public access, unsecured) and is somewhat reliable, but don't bet on it working. The gym is pretty good, and that along with the staff is all I can really praise here. The building is actively falling apart with cracks in multiple walls, and I have been in multiple rooms with foul smells seemingly coming from the air conditioner ducts. I have effectively abandoned any concept of maintenance orders as none have been responded to despite emails, requests, and the dreaded "portal". The trash rooms are infested with roaches as well, but honestly that's the least of this place's worries. Oh yeah, and the train horn when you're trying to sleep. I have posed this review as honestly and cordially as possible. This is not intended as a hit piece, it is just my genuine experience here. I hope in coming years the university makes efforts to improve conditions here, even if it costs them some profits (rent here is higher than some mortgages).

Affordable, good amenities, and AWESOME location!…read more Not the newest apartment community in Auburn, but has a lot going for it -- particularly for students on a budget, or non-students looking for a community that isn't dominated by kids who just want to party. One of the few places close to campus/downtown that's still affordable. They rent by the entire apartment, and not by the bedroom. Lease terms are not dependent on the school year, so you can move in/out any month. Rent doesn't include utilities, which is one way they are probably able to keep prices pretty low, unlike some communities around town that offer luxuries like valet trash service. Call me crazy, but I can take my own trash out if it means I'm saving a good amount of money. They have a student discount, and a discount for people who work at certain places. Be sure to ask if your employer is on the list, because it is not really publicized. Best thing about this place is the location. Only a mile from campus, with sidewalks the whole way there, so you can walk to class in a pinch if you miss the transit. Transit bus does not come into the parking lot here, but there are two stops within easy walking distance. Kroger is right next door, and right down the street you have a couple gas stations, drug stores, a lot of different restaurants, Hastings (bookstore and movie rentals), bowling alley, public library, and a bar. Very convenient if you don't have a car. One important thing to know before checking this place out: there are two distinctly different areas of the community, with different building types, and different interior layouts (and prices). The older section is made up of brick buildings surrounding a courtyard area with a pool. This is the part you can see easily just driving by on Dean Rd. It has the retro-motel architecture that can be found closer to campus in the downtown area. In this section, every door is on a long breezeway, so you don't have a private balcony or porch, and the entire front wall of each apartment is glass, so they're very bright and allow for a lot of natural light. All the kitchens have good cabinet space and are open, with a bar looking into the living room. Big bathrooms with huge mirrors and storage space. Bedrooms are decent size with big closets. Your bedroom window will face either Dean Rd or the parking lot, but they are well-insulated, so there's hardly any traffic noise. These apartments are all above average in size for Auburn. And super cheap! You will be hard-pressed to find this amount of space for the price, especially this close to campus. Helpful hint: these units are the lowest priced ones in this complex, BUT they are the largest. Drawbacks if you choose this area: Parking is a good distance from your front door. Probably not an issue unless you are really lazy, if you have a small child, or if you buy a ton of groceries. The buildings are pretty old, so floors are creaky. It helps to be on the second floor, so you don't hear people walking above you. Some of the appliances are old but kept in working condition. Might not look fancy, but they get the job done. Probably another reason why rent is cheap. Again, these buildings are OLD. You will have the occasional maintenance problem. On the bright side, the maintenance staff (only a couple guys) seems pretty knowledgeable, and they usually get things done quick. They are on-call 24-hours a day, so if you have an emergency at night or on the weekend, they will still come out and get it fixed. And if they can't fix something, they will replace it. The rest of the community is made up of buildings that are about 20 years newer than these. They are the yellow buildings that extend towards the back of the community and can be seen from Annalue Drive. Smaller but cost more because they're newer buildings with newer appliances. Fewer apartments per building, so more quiet/private. Parking is right outside your front door. Semi-private patio or balcony, shared with only one other apartment. Close to the smaller of the two pools, which is heated and open on the weekends in the winter time. Also closer to the dog park, if you are a pet parent. Separate dining area and enclosed kitchen. The best thing is the huge living room in the 2 BR. In general, people tend to keep to themselves in this section. Potential drawbacks if you choose this area: If you're in a 1 BR, any visitors have to pass through your bedroom to get to the bathroom. (No hallway.) None of them have WD hookups (but are close to a laundry room). Office staff is friendly and willing to help with just about any issue. They take split payments and will work with you if you have an emergency come up. I know of a lot of instances where they've actually gone out of their way to help residents, even with personal issues. They're good people, very understanding, they know your name, and you won't end up feeling like just a number. I would recommend this place for sure.

i lived here for 5 years, they were great until I moved out I did not have a choice my youngest…read moredaughter moved back home and we could not live in a 2 bed room apartment, they have hit me with every little fee possible, charged me $150 for vertical blinds because 1 was broken but they were not new blinds when I moved in, also charge me 500 for a spot on carpet that was there when I moved in, they have changed management so many times. They raised my rent one time after I had already signed my lease, I have an attorney working on this because I will not pay for something I did not do.
