I am sharing this so other pet owners can make informed decisions. I paid for 10 private training sessions specifically to address my dog's reactivity to outdoor triggers. Despite the time and significant financial investment, there was no improvement at all in the issue I hired them to work on. The sessions lacked a clear, professional training plan and mostly repeated basic cues my dog already knew. There was no structured guidance or progressive behavior work for reactivity. I remained committed and practiced as instructed, but professional-level coaching was simply not there. I dropped out of the puppy class with my Shetland Sheepdog, he already knew basics, and the first visit it seemed it was never cleaned, hair everywhere, yet they ask for you to put your dog on that with a treat, I complained and the next time it was cleaner at least in my space, but overall too much time given on other pups that may be finishing up or maybe something else. I feel the class was not well structured at all, so we dropped out, and yet I am not able to get a measly $66.00 refund, I can only have a credit to use it there. I must say this is in no way........GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL!!!! My opinion in reading some of these other reviews is this place has changed in many ways from the past and it shows!!!! Never see the dogs outside anymore a year ago you would drive by and see your pet playing. Now you pick up your dog and they are not tired as they were napping. Information is not properly communicated to you. Not to mention they are not flexible in accordance to one's work schedule (if you pay extra they might accommodate you). In one year the staff was fully replaced (which is odd). My dog was involved in an incident, I spoke with the manager of the day there they told me one story then emailed another story of what happened.. my dogs spend the majority of the time outside in the yard, playing with other dogs and socializing. They make sure the number of dogs in the yard is manageable, so I know my dog always has someone watching them, and they get plenty of individualized attention and ensure safety and well-being. They also offer a wide variety of classes and training programs going from basic obedience/behavior training to things like agilities and learning tricks which both myself and my dog enjoy doing, my dog especially enjoys when there is an audience to show off everything they have learned. As far as dog training and daycare programs go in this area, I have yet to find one even remotely close to being as good as Courteous Canine, and it's affordable too, which makes it even better. read more

Their day care program is top notch: at other daycares, your dog is outside for a minimal amount of time. Here, your dog is outside playing for over half the time they are there. The groups are small, so your dog is well looked after and much safer than large scale daycares. They really care about the dogs and offer to go out of their way to help you. DO NOT USE COURTEOUS CANINE FOR IN-HOME BOARDING SERVICES. I had a horrible experience with employees from Courteous Canine, and if you're considering in-home boarding, run in the other direction. I am supposed to leave for Europe in a week, so two months ago we contacted Courteous Canine for a sitter that could stay in our home for 10 days while we are gone. My pup is nervous around people and would not do well in a traditional kennel or clinic environment, so our behaviorist recommended we seek in-home boarding. I met with the sitter from CC and did two meet and greets with her. My dog seemed to like her, we all went on a walk, and I thought it would be a good fit, so we decided to a test run where we would be 20 minutes away and the sitter would stay in our home for two days. It was my understanding that these would be overnight stays with the caveat that if my dog was chilling and relaxed, the sitter could go home for the evening. Well, I can say, pretty much everything went wrong. I left three pages of detailed instructions for the sitter, and reviewed it with her before we left. I asked her to close doors, she didn't, and my dog got stuck in a bathroom, so we had to come home at midnight to let our dog out because we didnt see her on camera for hours. Medications were missed (I later found out it was intentionally missed even thought I left detailed instructions on what meds to take and organized her meds in a pill box for easy use). Food was left open (not a big detail, but lack of attention to detail), and the worst part -- the sitter LEFT MY DOG and she would've gone more than 24 hours without a walk if it wasn't for us being close by. My dog can be a challenge to get on a leash, so I understand that, but my sitter just up and left my house for another pet sit and didn't come back until the evening (and was still late when I asked her to come earlier to give meds). She didn't tell me when she was going to be back, and she didn't say that one of us should come home to walk the dog -- we made that decision on our own after she was gone for two hours and my dog was going on 15 hours of not being walked. So, during a two day test run, we had to return home twice to take care of our dog, and we cut our trip short by a day (so it really ended up being one day). And I'm supposed to trust this sitter for 10 days while we're on the other side of the planet? I reached out to the owner of the company to express my concerns, and she skirted responsibility of everything. Told me that my test run was a "pet sit" and not an "overnight stay" and that CC doesn't offer pet sits, even though my sitter planned to stay overnight. Make it make sense. The owner, with having no information about me or my dog, also said that my dog is not suitable for in-home boarding and should be taken to a vet clinic. Yes, a vet clinic with loud barking, unfamiliar environment, unfamiliar people (a huge trigger for her), and us being gone for days and not knowing why -- sounds like a really winning scenario, Angie!! I will be taking the advice of actual trained medical professionals on how my dog is boarded. Courteous Canine does not accept responsibility for anything, they are terrible to work with, and I would absolutely RUN in the other direction if you're looking for in-home boarding. Regardless of whether it's considered a "pet sit" or an "overnight stay", CC's employees absolutely do not care, they will blame you, make excuses, and will be careless and neglectful with your pet. read more

Why 5 stars? Because my pup is a whole lot smarter, and I am too. --- --- --- We adopted Moose the golden retriever pup on July 13th. From July 13-23, we were dumb parents, and the dog ran wild. He was crazy, and we just didn't know what to do with him. We didn't want to start off with bad habits, and it led to lots of confusion and frustration. Then Melissa from Courteous Canine came over for session #1 of 6 on 7/23. She's been a God send, and so incredibly helpful in teaching us a wide-range of tips/tricks. During the week, we just jot down things that we'd like to learn for the upcoming session, and when Melissa arrives, we just start firing questions. She covers each topic very thoroughly, and Moose loves her to death. He is so attentive with her, which is partially because she has unlimited treats, and partially because she speaks dog fluently :) We will be using the boarding service soon as well when we head out of town for an upcoming weekend, and we're excited about that, as Moose will actually be going home with one of the trainer's, rather than sitting in a cage most of the time. We love our pup, but don't want to be those parents that never do anything because we are grounded to our dog. read more

We purchased Yuri, a purebred Chihuahua, about two years ago. Like a lot of small dogs, he had small dog syndrome. He would bark loudly, growl and jump up and scratch people just to make his presence known. We could live with the first two, somewhat. It was the jumping on people we just couldn't tolerate. So we decided to enroll him in a class at Courteous Canine to see if it would make a difference. Puppy kindergarten, the course we enrolled in, includes six sessions. These sessions happen at the same time and day of the week (they offer a number of different days/times to meet your scheduling needs). You can do all six sessions in a row but you don't have to. Essentially you have about two months to complete your six sessions. I found the course helpful with working with Yuri. During the class we used treats to practice various commands. These commands were selected and taught to us by the instructor. She kept it mainly to commands that seemed necessary to create a positive interaction between dog and human. I don't remember ever thinking, gee, when am I going to use this command. After presenting the command to the class, the instructor gave us a chance to practice while she circulated around and helped as needed. Most lessons ended with a whole group activity that gave dog and owner (but mainly dog) a chance to show off what they learned in class, Through the puppy kindergarten course both dog and owner learned a lot. While Yuri hasn't completely lost his small dog need for attention he is, thanks to Courteous Canine, a much better listener. read more

Looking for help leash training our 6 month old Great Dane. We need to get him to the vet for his final puppy shots which are over due, due at 4 months . We were told by Saddleback Animal Hospital (THE BEST) not to take him out until his final shots were given, which are late because of his leash problem. 3 days after leaving VM, I received a call back from Debbie at Courteous Canines. So rude. I could never let her spend a minute with my boy. She was aghast that we had never taken our puppy out on a leash. She repeatedly asked, " no walks? no park? nothing? wow" she said. I explained our Vet said do not expose him until he's had all his shots (For his safety and for other dogs). She then perceived to "school me" on puppies having all their shots at 14 weeks. Guess she's a vet as well. Anyone in the animal care business in our area knows the reputation of Saddleback Animal hospital (it doesn't get any better). Courteous Canines are anything but, they are not knowledgeable, they have poor people skills, and are poor communicators. Look for someone more intuitive for you fire babies. You don't want a rude or judge-mental person around you or your pet. Especially someone who is not qualified. read more

My wife and I visited Courteous Canine today for initial meeting for a Board and Train for our 9 month old Sheepadoodle for 7 days while we were on vacation. We met with Marie who was nice and explained there was a $30 screening fee to evaluate our puppy before agreeing to the 7 day board and train. My wife had a list of questions as to mainly how long our puppy would be in the " crate". We wanted our puppy to have an opportunity to get exercise and interaction with other dogs. My wife and I were apprehensive to hear that after 8 in the evening there was no one present and the dog would be crated the entire time except for its 1 hour training lesson and 4 or 5 15 min breaks. We were shown a menu of services that all could be had for additional dollars ranging from daycare $30 to getting nails trimmed being brushed etc. my wife was having major anxiety of a 9 month old puppy crated from 8 until morning. Currently we are night owls who do not go to bed until after 12 and the puppy is good for 4-5 hours top not all night from 8pm. My wife took tour of facility and we agreed to pay the $30 and was told to return at 6pm it was now 10:00 am. My wife was very uncomfortable with being gone for 7 days paying almost $800 for 1 hour training. We were told our puppy who is still intact cannot play with any Day Care dogs so he would not get the exercise. We didn't even get to finish our cup of coffee and we knew it was a wrong decision. We arrived back there st 11:00 not even 1 hour later our dog was in a crate in a small room with 3 or 4 other dogs, Marie asked if we we're checking on our puppy and we informed her we thought it was too long to be in crate in evening. Marie said ok it was still $30 for today! I said can't we pay half since it was only 1 hour and he is in the crate? NO SHE HAD TO CALL IN ADDITIONAL STAFF??? I asked how about $20 and we were told No. Big Lesson learned they charge additional $ for Everything..... I am a business owner who runs his Business with the Old Fashion Rule #1 Customer is Right.... Rule #2 If Customer is Wrong reread Rule #1 Beware and don't make same mistake. PS there was no Doggie DayCare on this day only the 4 other dogs in their Crates so this was a good indication of what my puppy was to receive. Courteous Canine - Too precious to be cared for this way - Pet Training Near Me - Lutz, Florida

TL;DR - I boarded my dog with Courteous Canine and she came back with an infected cut, a double eye infection and kennel cough. I would not recommend them. - I'm truly saddened to write this review. My dog enjoyed daycare at this location for an extended period. She's young (under a year) and it was important to us that she had an opportunity to socialize outside of our home and with our dogs. COVID has significantly limited her experiences so we were happy to find a place where she could play with new friends, human and dog alike. This is the only reason I am giving two stars. For six weeks, our pup had good experiences. Then we left her for a week for board and train. She was returned to us with an infected cut on her side that we'd been told was treated. On top of this, she had a double eye infection and kennel cough (despite vaccinations). When I picked her up, I immediately saw green discharge from her eyes. The trainer I met with seemed unconcerned by this. She then lied to the manager about my commentary and said she'd seen nothing. She also told me the cut was healed up and she hadn't seen it in days. A quick inspection once we were home immediately located the cut which had to be shaved by the vet due to build up and infection. Outside of this incident, the team at Courteous Canine seemed to have a hard time keeping track of my dog's possessions. They lost her bowl, her collar and her harness all on separate trips. On our last trip, they tried to keep the scoop out of her bag. They also asked me if items that weren't hers belonged to her. This speaks of poor client item control which - in the case of disease transmission - is very dangerous. For dog parents, it's pretty annoying. We also struggled with communication regarding pick-up and drop-off on more than one occasion. Up until now, I was willing to overlook these faults because my dog was enjoying her stays and the staff seemed to genuinely care about the animals who visited. Minor inconveniences (we never got our bowl back and settled for a random one they sent home one day) were worth it. With this in mind, I recommend you look elsewhere for your training, daycare and boarding. There are better trainers who utilize the positive only method and far better daycare and boarding facilities that will take your pet's health seriously. Courteous Canine is a risk not worth taking. read more

I really love this place. I like the completely no force way of training, as I tried a Sit Means Sit training and witnessed dogs being abused, so I really appreciate the personality of fun that this place exudes. The trainers are very knowledgable and willing to help, and each of the training classes are fun and helpful. My dog is significantly more well trained because of this place. The only, tiniest annoyance I had was an agility trainer that told us we could not use the word "No" and would keep us from saying that word. For me and my dog, no is a non-aversive non-rewarding response to let my dog know to keep trying to solve the problem. Other than that, this place is a real gem. read more

I brought in my 18-month-old Weimaraner today to participate in a dock diving class. I had called in advance to register and explained in detail what my dog's experience and skill level was. I was advised to enroll her in the intermediate level class which I was told would be a 90 minute teaching session with a maximum of eight dogs in the class and a minimum of three jumping sessions on the diving dock, each consisting of three jumps. I paid $30 in advance. We arrived to find an overcrowded "class" with ten dogs present. We had to wait roughly 40 minutes between our turns on the dock and we received absolutely no assistance or instruction from Scott who was "moderating" the session. To make matters worse, our dog only received two tries on the dock because of the overcrowding and some participants taking more than their fair share of turns. To be fair, Scott extended the class by 30 minutes to try to allow every dog three trips to the dock, but after waiting fifteen minutes into overtime there were still four dogs in front of mine, so we just left as my dog was overheated and bored and I had other commitments. This is not an instructional class. It is paid access to a diving dock populated almost exclusively by competition level dogs. I enrolled my pup because she loves to jump and swim and I thought it might be fun for her. She had been on the diving dock at the Ocala Dog Ranch the previous weekend and had a smashing time. There was no joy in this experience and frankly I found many of the other dog owners to be competition obsessed, insular and cliquish. The icing on the cake came as I informed Scott that we would have to leave before our third jump and he tried to sell me private diving lessons. If you have a solid handle on training and are just looking to try some new things, you may get a little flustered with the basic instruction and slower pace (in my humble opinion). I had the pleasure of working with Pamela. She is the type of trainer that talks non-stop to dogs and she wants to see other owners do the same. That non-stop talking actually gets my 90 lb dog extremely excited and makes handling him a challenge. I pulled Pamela to the side and let her know that the non-stop talking doesn't work well for my dog. She was fine with my method of training and we moved on. I give it 3 stars because Pamela didn't appear to recognize that all dogs do not respond to one type of training. Depending on a dogs background, skill set, etc., you may have to alter your method. As a trainer, I just think this is something you should not only know, but pick up on immediately and adjust accordingly (my 2 cents). read more

We took our dog here for Puppy Kindergarten back in 2002. She enjoyed it so much we brought her back for the Canine Good Citizen certification training. Sadly, she is no longer with us. But when we were ready to get another dog we knew we would take them to Courteous Canine! We took our new dog to Puppy Kindergarten in 2012 and we also did one of their speciality classes, Really Reliable Coming When Called. The facility is clean and air conditioned. The classes are small enough that you can address specific issues with your dog. The times and dates are varied so it was easy to find a class that fit our schedule. I've been taking classes from Courteous Canine for nearly three years now. All the trainers are very knowledgeable about training and experienced with working with different types of breeds and behaviors. They specialize in obedience, puppy and dog sport training. I've taken classes for agility, Canine Good Citizen, puppy obedience, and behavior modification along with private sessions. The approach they use is based on current scientific methods that have been proven to work without causing harm to the animal. They base their methods on their motto which is "No Force, Just Fun!" and truly believe in a fun approach to training without stressing out the dog or owner, no matter the behavior issue they might be tackling. Some methods popularized by television shows that increase aggression have caused all sorts of problems with pets nowadays are not used here and the trainers explain why in an easy to understand way. Trainers are very helpful, easy to talk to and communicate with you often. I've had many trainers spend time with me after class if I needed additional help understanding something or if my dog just wasn't getting it that class. They truly care about animals and you really get your money's worth out of these classes since they are so experienced. They specialize in behavior modification with dogs or cats that are aggressive. We chose this basic manners class because they had great reviews and were the only ones that seemed to understand that it's extremely difficult to be able to commit to coming every single week for 6 weeks straight (due to other plans & commitments). They give you 10 weeks to complete 6 weeks. Also they were the only ones that offered a class that both my boyfriend and I were capable of attending (Saturday class). We recently rescued a timid, unsocialized dog that didn't even know how to walk on a leash. She apparently never heard of the word 'sit' either. We were afraid of doing more harm than good on our own and immediately enrolled her in basic manners. Not only to have her learn basic skills but to help socialize her. Luckily the trainers have been so understanding of her specific needs. They have also gone above and beyond and provided us with special one on one time that I've been so appreciative of. We're one class away from graduating. Our dog has come so far! I now have some skills in how to deal with basic manners as well as how to deal with her specific needs. As required we dropped off Buddy for a trial visit (which comes with a $30 charge). I'm not sure how crating a rescue dog almost immediately and being surprised when he wasn't happy is helping/trading in any way. Moving from MD to FL we were looking for a new daycare. We came across Courteous Canine Dog Smith which we found online. Our nearly 2 1/2 yr. old dog has been to daycare well over 100 times. His previous daycare uses him to rehabilitate dogs with behavioral issues as well as temperament testing on new dogs that join daycare. That said we were stunned to hear that our dog had started a fight and was no longer welcomed at Courteous Canine. The story we were told by Angelica (owner) who did not witness the incident, was that our dog started the fight by "posturing" towards another dog. The dog felt threatened and defended itself by biting my dog multiple times on the top of the head, shoulder, and back - where he had to get staples. We later discovered marks on the inside of his left ear and a puncture on the top of his neck when we took him to the vet. We were told that Smokey bit the other dog back; however it had no marks because it "has a thick coat". Angelica goes on to say that the other dog has never had an incident there and is "bomb" proof as it gets along with all. She also states that she does not like to blame the dogs and she thinks that my dog may "have a physical problem that may be causing him to act out of character." I'm not sure why Angelica did not let me speak to the 2 people who actually witnessed the incident as Smokey was under their care. It's also hypocritical to say that she does not like to place blame however they are blaming Smokey and he's the one with bite marks in 6 different places with staples and the other dog doesn't have a scratch. Also I find it extremely difficult to believe that my 70lb dog (who destroys toys that are labeled indestructible such as the Bionic bone and Kong toys within minutes) bit the other dog multiple times and didn't puncture the skin as it has a "thick coat". read more

I have been working with Angelica and Courteous Canine for approximately 6 years after my local instructors could not help me with my dogs. I have two "non-traditional" dogs that I had started in agility. We had quite a few problems that after working with Angelica I learned were because of anxiety issues. Angelica taught me the signs of stress, strategies to help my dogs with their stress, and how to make agility a fun game. We are now happily competing in agility. I am a veterinarian and first met Angelica in 2002 as a client of mine. I was familiar with positive reinforcement training and thrilled to finally find someone who truly follows that path always not just some of the time. Almost every trainer I have ever met that calls themself positive always has some form of punishment in their training, but not Angelica and her crew. I had a Golden who was so severely dog reactive that I had to wait until the middle of the night to take him out. Angelica and her trainers showed both the skill and patience to turn my boy around. This is a great training facility that really focuses on what is best for you and your dog. They use the best and most scientifically advanced and proven training methods which cause no harm or discomfort to your dog and you build a stronger relationship with your dog because of it. My puppy LOVES going here for class - we will be signing up for many more classes in the future. This place is huge has EVERYTHING! Multiple agility fields, a lure course, a pool for swim lessons and dock jumping - it really is great. The trainers are awesome and will happily work with you as a group and individually during class. They specifically ask me each week if there is something I would like to work on in addition to what we will already cover. The trainers have helped out many in class with guidance and solutions for puppy mouthing, jumping, and much more. We have used them for last minute overnight boarding on two occasions and it is nice knowing I was leaving my new puppy in the hands of actual dog trainers - not just kennel attendants. read more
