This is a really nice place for a drink or a meal, it has a lovely cosy atmosphere, old fashioned and traditional, and yet trendy at the same time. It can get very, very busy at weekends, as it's such a popular place to go for a drink. We went for a meal not too long ago, we went early in the evening to avoid any rush (and because we didn't want to leave the children with my Mum too late into the evening). I'm a vegetarian and was really pleased to see they offered a vegeburger, and it was absolutely delicious. Hubby had some kind of meat pie, which he thought was great, too. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was really nice. The toilets were clean and pleasant, too. The only thing I didn't like about the visit, was that they took my credit card, and kept it behind the bar. I think this was because I ordered a drink each and a main meal, but hadn't decided about a dessert, so they kept the tab open for later - but I don't see why they needed to actually keep hold of my card, and I think it was rather risky, actually. On programmes like The Real Hustle they always say you shouldn't let your card out of your sight, and yet here they expect you to just hand it over and leave it in a glass behind the bar until you've finished your meal. Aside from that, it was a lovely evening, and I would recommend the Black Bull to anyone.

We were worried it would be booked up, but there were free seats, so we grabbed one. We decided on some food and drinks and one of us headed to the bar to order. 20-30 minutes he hadnt returned and I began to wonder if something terrible had happened. No, it was just that the bar only had one person taking all the food and drink orders and thats how long it took to get an order in. Cut to another 30-45 minutes later and we still didnt have our food. The server told us several times that it was coming, but it just kept taking longer and longer. For some reason everyone else around us was arriving, ordered, getting their food and leaving in the time it took us to order and wait for our food. It was a mystery. We finally received our food and all was fine. I ordered a huge chicken roast and had a ton of chicken leftover. I HATE wasting food, so I asking if I could get some kind of container to bring it home and the server looked at me like I was a crazy person and said she would have to ask the chef. She then informed me that because of health and safety reasons (?) the chef said I could not take my leftover chicken. Let me just says that though I am American, I have lived in Europe for 9 years and I get that some places refuse to give you doggy bags, saying it is for 'health and safety', but really its just for looks and the chef's sense of pride. This is ridiculous and a huge waste of food. I should have just said OK and then wrapped the chicken in a napkin and taken it home anyway. It has a great front area where people can drink under the wonderful trees, and of course one is a beautiful Copper Beech; there's also a pear tree in one corner. They give excellent customer service and treat everyone like they are the only customer in the pub. Moving onto the drinks, as they are only a small village pub they have a selection of non alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. They might not have an extensive range of drinks but they have excellent prices, in which they can accomadate everyones price range. Now the reason i was writing this review, the food. the Half Moon's food is, well how i would say exceptional, now not many people get me to like food, but when i tasted this food it was like an explotion in my mouth, the food was full of flavour. I wished i could have had a dessert but we had to leave to get back home, i could have stayed there all night until it closed. The prices of the food are highly stated in the menu, they have a fantastic childrens menu aswell. We talked to the management, and they said that they believed in portion sizes and to be honest i thought well everyone says that but when our food came out i thought to myself they were not lying. i would recommend this pub for any occasion even if you just fancy a nice meal and a drink with the family. I am looking forward to my next visit.
