We fired him after one letter. We were billed $6,000 for a single demand‑letter response. We filed a Bar complaint -- the Bar didn't find his billing wrong, but did say we didn't have to pay his final invoice. That felt like a tacit nod to his unreasonable billing. He billed us for missing his own deadlines -- including follow‑ups where the opposing counsel is asking for his late response. We were billed for calls asking why he missed deadlines. He drafted a negotiation letter we didn't authorize, and then charged us for "revisions" after we asked him not to proceed that way. His "free consultation" abruptly turned into surprise billing over 30 minutes. Tasks under 5 minutes were billed as 15‑minute increments at $480/hr. We later hired new counsel who litigated the same issue -- and won -- for less than what Counts charged for that one draft. Not illegal, but in our experience inefficient, opaque, and disappointing. I never even got a chance to speak with the attorney because his assistant is really unprofessional. Aminah kept demanding me to upload documents and answer questions saying " I didn't make the deadline" when I didn't even have a confirmed appointment on the calendar. There is a free 30 minute consultation and I recommend to organize any documents you have as well as to be clear, concise and transparent with the details of your case. He provided me an estimate of the amount of time (hours) that would be required for this effort and recommended me to take time to think about the decision before signing the retainer. I have never written a review in my life, let alone a negative review. As a small business owner, I understand the impact a negative review can have. However, my experience with Counts Law Firm was so unprofessional and disappointing that I feel compelled to warn others. I gave them every opportunity to make this right, but they failed. I initially contacted the firm for a completely unrelated matter around 9/7/24, I didn't hire them for the matter we discussed. Please keep in mind this was a free consultation. During that consultation, I had a 45-minute conversation with attorney Emahn. Afterward, the firm followed up with several calls, despite me making it clear that I would reach out when I was ready to move forward. Later, I contacted them for a different, business-related issue involving an employee. I simply needed a cease and desist letter sent. They quoted me a $5,000 retainer but agreed to reduce it to $2,500 when I expressed concerns. Their hourly rate was $500, and I assumed I would receive professional, efficient service. Unfortunately, that was far from the case. They used the $2500 retainer to bill/charge for the free consultation, I never received an invoice for the "Free Consultation". On 9/11/24 was the "Free Consultation" they billed me on 10/25, keep reading... From the start, the communication was frustrating and disorganized. I received nonsensical emails that required responses from me when I gave them all the information they needed --and I was charged $125 for emails that didn't make sense. After paying the retainer, I requested a brief 10-minute call with the attorney to discuss the case on 10/29. Despite the urgency of the matter, I was told he wouldn't be available until 11/5, more than a week later. I never actually had a call with him regarding this matter, which is baffling considering I hired this firm to handle a critical situation. I have had to hire attorneys before and I have never not been able to speak directly to the attorney once my retainer was paid. I knew then this was going to be an awful experience, but the retainer was already paid. requesting my money back would only delay the urgent cease and desist letter they needed to go out. Adding insult to injury, I was charged $1,000 for my *initial* 45 minute free consultation that I never hired them for. See the attached invoice from 9/11 but billed on 10/25 when they had my retainer in hand for the cease and desist letter, they charged me $500 for the consultation and $500 to prepare the retainer agreement I never signed or agreed to. To top it off, the cease and desist letter I needed? I essentially wrote it myself, They made minor edits, "attorney recommendations" and billed me roughly $2000 for the one 3-paragraph letter. The entire experience was unprofessional, disorganized, and felt like a money grab. For anyone considering Counts Law Firm, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Mr. Counts, The consultation took over an hour because you spent the majority of the time highlighting and confirming information that I didn't need to know since I was the one sending you that information. But you just affirmed your billing tactics- you needed me to stay on longer so that you could bill me after the free 30 minutes. Your staff actually told me "it was okay to go over the 30'" but there was a reason for that, wasn't it? I signed a retainer contract for "legal services" like you mentioned - please specify what was rendered that required a law degree? You had your staff run different tasks that had nothing to do with the case in order to keep the bills going. The only legal work you did was drafting a demand letter, which according to another attorney was not even good. You took on the case and convinced me to sign telling me I had a good case all because you were interested in making money. I paid to consult 2 other attorneys who advised me against seeking compensation because I didn't have a strong enough case and it was not worth it. At least they were honest, right? You told me your office has been emailing me, I wonder if this is another lie. One of the issues I had with your office was their dishonesty. Even in your comment right now is a lie - "You still have not paid for the services provided". The only work that I'm refusing to pay for is the work that you produced after I terminated the contract. Basically, your defense is "you signed a legal document." We found Counts Law Firm on Yelp. We spoke with Shana and explained our situation. We had a lawsuit against a car dealership that forged our signature on auto loan documents and bank information which in essence opened an entire auto loan on our credit without ANY consent. Shana and Counts immediately took our case. We drove from the South Bay Area of Los Angeles to Pasadena for the initial consultation. Counts was there, met with us and reassured us that everything will be fine. After we processed a payment of $2,500, we never heard from Counts again. Yes, he did get the auto loan removed from our credit but the communication practices with this Law Firm is utterly ridiculous and mediocre. We had to call them for follow up. We had to reach out to them for updates. We had to explain our story to Shan multiple times because she didn't know what was going on, even though they had all of our information. Counts wrote out a demand letter to the corporation to have the loan deleted, which took about a month and a half. He sent out the same demand letter 3 times. He continued to say he would just keep sending the letter out but of course we had to pay for that time. We also asked him about going to court for Lawyer fees and he wasn't willing. He collected $3,500 from us to delete an auto loan off our credit and we talked to him twice. We received no money back to cover our lawyer fees. This firm will collect your money, take the easiest way out and not communicate with you whatsoever. If your fortunate enough to find this review before hiring this attorney, Don't! I paid 5,000$ grand after listing to him tell me how great my case is, when looking back on what issues I needed help with it wasn't about how strong the case was I simply needed a lawyers help to have my voice be heard- Emhan Counts himself did a fantastic job convincing me that this would be the case. That is until after I got my bank on the phone and paid his retainer fee, from that day forward not only did I put together the entire case file for counts office but it was nearly impossible to get Emhan Counts on the phone for the next 6 months. Here's the good part to keep a long story short... I get a phone call from there office 2 days before my first case hearing in an official court. Only to listen to them telling me I not only owe another 5,000$ retainer fee for another 6 months yet I owe roughly 1,600$ for paperwork they have been filing for me... One other thing before I go on, Emahn counts will give you the whole sha bang about how yelp is being sued for the bad reviews, etc... If you ask. Try to stay away from that, his office is very shady and I'd do your research before going to him. Unfortunately Their office was recommended to me by the state bar and in a state of desperation for help I made a huge mistake. At the end of the 6 months Emahn counts and his short supply of trained staff called to tell me as well as email me if I did not make or come current on what I owed, which was a complete surprise to me they would file for substitution of attorney. For those who don't know, not only is this unethical but your attorney shouldn't never tell you this... I'll try to post photos from my email from this firm to show the seriousness of my situation, very unethical attorney who will play himself up to you hear them most likely take you for your money & run know you'll have to go through the slow process of contacting the state bar to file an ethics suite to possible get your money back. Regardless a year worth of lost time... It's not worth it! Stay away from this guy. Hired about 9 months ago from today's date January 1st 2015.
