However, our stay here was so amazing that it hasn't left our minds. So, the "bed" part of bed and breakfast? So comfortable! The rooms were amazing and had such a sense of history. The rooms were very spacious and beautifully decorated. Vintage wallpaper and bed dressings give you the full effect of traveling in time to a bygone era. The showers and bathtubs were great. The tubs were the claw foot standalone type tubs and not the typical Home Depo special you get in motels and hotels. There's just something about showering in one of those tubs that takes you back. However if you want to use them, there are indeed wonderful modern jacuzzis available in the rooms as well which are super relaxing after a day of walking around and sightseeing and shopping. Things were very comfortable inside despite it being very hot and so humid outside. And there were extra fans if you needed them and you wanted to stay cooler too. The furniture is actual wood and not the cheap particle board stuff used with in so many places today. The wood just feels "rich and elegant." From the outside, you get such a sense of history. The place is absolutely beautiful. Now... the "breakfast" part of bed and breakfast was so filling. You will eat like you've never eaten before and will want more but won't have the space to put it. I wish we could have stayed an extra day even just for the food. The owner asks about your preferences and needs and does such a great job with the food. She makes a killer sweet tea as well! The place was remarkably maintained and the owner was so welcoming. She felt like a family member we haven't seen in so long, like a grandmother to us and our kids. She was super flexible about the check in and check out times as well, enabling us to get a quick shower in before leaving so that after sight seeing we didn't need to sit in our sweaty clothes for the next leg of the trip. We so much wanted to stay longer! It was such a great experience there is no doubt that we will stay here every time we come to Metropolis. Oh and I should mention that when you stay here, you do get admission to the Superman museum included in the cost which is just icing on the cake. So really, why are you still reading? Book a stay. You will not be disappointed. Five stars, fifty stars, five hundred stars!

So glad we finally did. We stayed in the White Oak Treehouse and it was solid. Such a cool experience being up in the trees but still completely comfortable. Clean, cozy, and everything worked the way it should. Peaceful without feeling rough or overly rustic. We made use of the fire pit and the grill, which really added to the stay. Sitting outside near the treehouse in the evening, surrounded by trees, felt incredibly private. Honestly, I think the White Oak is probably the most private rental on the property. It's in the middle of so many great trails. Garden of the Gods, Rim Rock, and Pounds Hollow are all close by. Just a note......Pounds Hollow is only accessible to foot traffic from December through mid-March. We spotted a bald eagle, heard coyotes at night, and I got to sit on the porch with coffee listening to a rooster crow somewhere in the distance (no roosters on site, which made it even funnier). The staff are great and very responsive. From booking to check-in, it's been a really pleasant experience. I received a gift card for my birthday...just a heads up, if you're using a gift card you'll need to call the office to make your reservation so they can apply it. Otherwise, you can book directly on their website. The outpost where you check in has tons of resources for hiking and trails, plus a lot of other helpful amenities. There were also a couple of sweet surprise kitty visitors during our stay, which just added to the charm. This has been a really great stay. Would absolutely come back.

Small town with not much in it - no restaurants or anything. I got hungry around 9pm and had to go to the local bar and they warmed up a frozen pizza for me. yay. The parks in the area are a lot of fun, esp. Garden of the Gods - I'd say that was my favorite thing I saw around here. River Taxi looks interesting, but didn't have a chance to ride it. Definitely would have been fun to have a boat to cruise the river with.

The proprietor gave us a tour and we made a note to try it out in the fall, which we just did. The building's from 1812, but very nicely redone while keeping its old charm. The location is incredible, right on the river, and it's a great base from which to explore the whole region. Great little floating catfish restaurant next door. Town itself is mostly dead, but we still had fun walking around it and spending a few bucks in a couple of places. Breakfast in the morning was fantastic, and they gave us clues on other places to visit. Wi-fi. No kidding. ANd it was pretty good. We mostly had the place to ourselves, and in fact we were the only ones in the building the last two nights, which is a little weird, but locked up nice and tight. The walls are a little thin, wondered what it would be like if they were crowded, but we lucked out. Everybody we dealt with was so nice. It's not a Hilton, it's a refurbished and very old place. But they seriously did a great job. Looking forward to a return visit.

My husband and I like to get away to a cabin for our anniversary and have done so for the last four…read moreyears. The first three years we have been thrilled with our accommodations but not so for Cabin at Mountain Glen. At first glance, it looks wonderful and quaint. We were met by owner, Rose, who showed us the cabin's amenities. She even had some fresh muffins from the bakery and fresh ground coffee, something that no other cabin owner has done for us. That's where the niceties end. The cabin wasn't the cleanest cabin I've been in, that's for sure. The couch actually looked quite gross. The shower heads were so full of lime scale and so were the jets for jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. The hot tub jets didn't really come out very strong - that might just be the way they were constructed - or it could also be due to lime scale. When Rose showed me the hot tub there was quite a bit of calcium deposition on the seat and she even told me that their water was full of calcium. So, I rent a two bedroom cabin - ALWAYS. You see my husband and I don't sleep in the same bed. He has restless leg syndrome and I and an extremely light sleeper. I get awakened by every move he makes and he makes 1,000's in one evening. (Well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration.). So, I went to put my bag in the upstairs bedroom and there was a padlock on the door. I called Rose and while I'm sure she would have come back to the cabin to help us out, she didn't seem to happy to do so. She told me that would be an extra charge and so I just thought I didn't read something right on the rental agreement and I told her that we would figure something out. The living room soda was a sofa bed so we figured my husband could sleep there. Well, it had no sheets. There were no sheets for it anywhere in the cabin. That night was not a very restful night for either of us. The next morning it was quite cold. I didn't want to turn the heat on so I tried to turn the fireplace on but couldn't find the remote anywhere. My husband decided to call Rose and talk to her about the bedroom, the sleeper sofa and the fireplace. He did and his tone was actually quite pleasant. Rose on the other hand came unglued on the other end. She was extremely defensive. The gist of the conversation was: 1) there was an extra fee for the second bedroom (even though only two people were staying there); 2) there was an extra fee for linens for the sleeper sofa (absurd); and 3) they hadn't turned the gas on for the fireplace yet and weren't planning on it. Well, he told her that it didn't state any of this on the website and her attitude got worse. We did have her come to the cabin to open the second bedroom and we paid the extra fee - even though there was nothing ANYWHERE ON THE WEBSITE OR ON THE RENTAL AGREEMENT that indicated that this would be the case. (At one point, when she came to open the bedroom and make up the second bed - it wasn't made up yet - she even threatened to kick us out. That was comical - we didn't do anything wrong - we simply wanted to use the bedroom we rented.) I will NEVER rent from her again.
