This place is a true hidden gem. There is so much I can say about the Makanda Inn. I found this bed and breakfast last minute a while ago and the prices were very reasonable for what they were. I really got the best bang for my buck and is a true all inclusive experience that I will never forget. The owners here are also very friendly and their mission about starting this place years ago shows their dedication to the hospitality market. This place is clean and it feels like I'm staying at a four-star hotel. They do have a lot of terms and conditions when it comes to booking so be aware before booking please don't make any changes. The lobby itself is beautiful , the rooms itself are incredible. They have a beautiful balcony if you stay in the main part of the hotel. The outdoor area is also really good and has great views. you even have a bonfire. The guests here are really down to earth and friendly. This place hosts weddings and other Gatherings as well. Since there wasn't a lot of guests here, I really wish there was an opportunity to actually have the bar open during our visit. The Innkeeper also does a great job taking care of the hotel. Even though it's a bit far even though it's a bit far from a grocery store I recommend buying your stuff in advance. If you're making your way to the winery Trail or to the hiking trails you're in the absolute heart of it all and that's why this whole house and the prime location that it is! After hearing about Exploring Illinois on Chicago Channel 5 news, I was curious about an Eco lodge downstate Illinois. After doing some googling, I came across Makanda Inn, in Makanda, Illinois. The website was great! It gave me a lot of insight to the lodge and the whole area of the Shawnee National Forest! This lodge is completely eco friendly. I was looking for a place to celebrate mine and my partners' 3 year anniversary! The drive down is quite long but soo worth it! The accommodations and our room in the lodge itself was lovely! So clean and spacious. It has a stone shower floor with a large shower head. The carpet in the room is so plush and cozy. We loved everything about the Inn. The Innkeepers - Shawna and Greg were so nice and accommodating. They have a cute little bar and a beautiful outside area with a fire going at night. It is a great location so close to trails and exploring too! We highly recommend this lovely little hidden spot! read more

After family events tanked our anniversary trip in October, we kept looking for a makeup. I found the Makanda Inn online, the website was good, booked online, and got the West End cabin. The beginning of a great trip. The cabin itself is fantastic. Gorgeous inside, full kitchen, DirectTV for when you're exhausted from hiking (like we were), wonderful decor, the bedroom was nice and dark, lots of room. We've stayed in some pretty stark places, but this was just as good as any hotel. The innkeepers are Jackie and Kyle, and they were fantastic. They cooked a great dinner on our last night. The grounds are nice, and it's just outside of town. Deathly quiet at night, as it is back in the woods. We found a wonderful trail to hike just down the road. Can't get much of a signal at the cabin, but who cares? They have wifi at the lodge if you need it. You don't stay at a place like this for the internet. Makanda itself only has a boardwalk in town, but all the shops are operating, and they're very eclectic. A must-visit. Makanda Inn is also perfectly situated if you're going to hike the western portion of the Shawnee forest, which we did. I can't say enough good stuff about this place. This was one of the best places we've stayed in 32 years of anniversary trips. We're already talking about returning in the fall. read more

The Makanda Inn was a great place to stay, beautiful and comfortable accommodations in the middle of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. Very close to many wineries and the laid back town of Makanda, you will enjoy this Inn. My wife and I stayed in the lodge for two nights and Heather was great. Heather gave us food and winery recommendations and made outstanding breakfasts for us. The Inn is also constructed in an environmentally friendly manner with strawbale insulation. All around a very nice place to stay in Southern Illinois. Also, we saw some little lizards running around outside the Inn, so that was a bonus! read more

Don't be fooled by the snazzy website. Isn't the idea of a bed and breakfast that the people working there are super helpful, personable, and take good care of you? Despite being only 2 of the 4 guests in the inn, they treated us like shit. When I made the reservation they said the inn was located 15 minutes from the park we wanted to visit, but it turned out to be almost 2 HOURS AWAY. Plus the innkeeper didn't even have directions to the park or a map. The inn-keeper Janelle was banging on our door repeatedly at check-out time and demanding that we get the hell out. Otherwise, she didn't really speak to us while we were there. Sure, it's a really nice looking place, but if I'm going to pay $150 to have a bed and get treated like shit, I'd at least expect a mini bar. read more

We recently stayed in the Sienna Cottage and had a wonderful time! To rip off the technology-Band-Aid, I must warn everyone that there is ZERO phone signal out here in the boonies. So don't come out visiting thinking you're going to stream Netflix or do some Candy Crush. The main building (and its 4 bedrooms) has Wi-Fi, but the cottages do not, so bring a good book or two! Our Sienna cottage (and surrounding area) was clean and well maintained with two exterior sitting areas with tables and chairs. One sitting space was near a fire pit and the second space was on a private second-story patio. I preferred the second story due to the lovely view of the woods and small streams within. The interior of the cottage seemed small but was laid out in such a way that the space felt larger than it should have. The bed was backwards (which was odd) but when you opened the curtains and saw the trees outside the bedroom window, it made a lot of sense. There's a curved staircase that leads downstairs to a small kitchenette and living area with a little TV, a full couch, and table with chairs. It was homely and yet woodsy all the same. We loved our little cottage. There are two downsides we noticed. The first involved the trains that pass nearby. Luckily, they don't seem to toot their train horns as they come through town, and you can barely hear the trains while you're indoors, but if you're sitting outside when one comes through, the whine of their brakes can be a bit ear-shattering. The second was breakfast is not included with the cottage rentals. If you stay in one of the 4 bedrooms at the main inn, breakfast is part of the packaged deal, but for the 4 bedrooms located outside the main building (which are all maybe 30-60 seconds of walking away from the main building) breakfast is an added-on expense. Admittedly, the cottages have their own kitchenette so you can cook, but the guests who do not pay out for breakfast are honest-to-God missing out on one of the best treasures this place is hiding: Chef Kyle. Kyle is one of the innkeepers. He's a down-to-Earth guy, funny and likeable, and a fantastic cook. Not only will Kyle be making you the best breakfast you've ever had - hands down - but he'll even whip up some fierce dinner menus in case you don't want to travel the 30 minutes out of town for some grub. My wife and I recently spent two nights in the Sienna Cottage at the Makanda Inn and had a wonderful time. The rooms in the cottage are perfect for two people, very well appointed and have everything you need for a great stay. The bed was comfortable, the European style shower was great and the kitchen had a nice refrigerator, stove and all the utensils and dishes you would need. The rooms are cozy and romantic, and the eco friendly cottage was really neat. We walked the lighted path over to the Inn one evening and had a few late night drinks at their new bar downstairs. The caretakers, Loraine and Malcolm at Makanda Inn, are truly wonderful people and were so friendly and caring. It really is a neat oasis in the woods. The Makanda shops are just a half mile away and are also a must-see. The Inn is close to the wineries and only two scenic miles from the nearest highway. We can't wait to go back and stay there again. read more

I can not say a bad word about this place, or Malcolm and Lorraine, the managers. Very warm and welcoming!! I stayed in a cabin and my sister stayed in the lodge. It is tucked away and you feel like you are in the middle of nature. The lodge has a very warm feel about it and the atmosphere is very welcoming. I enjoyed talking with Lorraine and Malcolm, they are very accommodating to your needs. The rooms are very clean and smell wonderful. I will definitely be back, but this time I just might have to add the breakfast to my stay. I heard from my sister it was just wonderful!!! If you like the rustic feel and being tucked away from the hustle and bustle then this place is for you. They also have journals in the room where you can write something about your stay. We enjoyed staying in the West-End Cottage for 2 nights in June 2014. The house is very cute, well-maintained and clean. It has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and it was very convenient to have a full kitchen with full-sized refrigerator, stove, microwave, all cookware and dishware, etc. There is also a firepit in the back of the house. It is a perfect set-up for 2 couples. The staff is very pleasant and friendly. We found it a very convenient location to visit the numerous wineries on the wine trail. read more

We stayed in the main house at the Inn and had a fantastic time. The Inn is beautifully maintained and very quaint. The breakfast was awesome! Giant City was basically across the street and we were able to walk to a hiking trail. Downtown Makanda is a short walk too and very interesting. The Innkeeper was courteous and professional. My last stay at the Makanda Inn was in 2013 and the innkeepers have changed a couple of times since then! The new couple managing the Inn and doing the fantastic cooking now are from New Jersey and are very happy learning about all southern Illinois has to offer. The Inn is meticulously maintained; breakfasts fresh and delicious. My husband's family came from L.A. and Boise to celebrate his birthday and we had two nights at this lovely retreat. The Innkeeper built a fire for us one evening and it was so pleasant with the fire, the full moon, and the owls calling that it was hard to go inside. Once indoors though, you get the treat of sleeping in the most comfortable bed in the world and the most luxurious sheets. Left this time with a source to at least have the scrumptious sheets at home! Keep up the good work Makanda Inn!! read more
