After 2 weeks with Mrs Potvin, he's been reading and actually wanting to read books with us which had not been the case at his old school. Their educational model is American-style Montessori, so even though there are rules to be followed, their is much nurturing and compassion that accompanies learning activities. She has learned about all different cultures and some French, Spanish, & Italian! Lunches are amazing - Chef Don makes gourmet food that your kid will actually eat. The bully, a 5th grader moving to 6th grade, was asked to write an apology -- and all he wrote was: "I'm sorry." The school then claimed this was "sufficient" because "he doesn't have the writing capabilities" to say more. Let me get this straight: You're telling us that a student in fifth grade, who can't even write a basic apology, is being allowed to pass to the next grade level -- instead of getting the intervention he clearly needs? So not only is Central Road failing victims of bullying, it's neglecting the educational needs of the aggressors too. That's two layers of failure. Meanwhile, my cousin -- the victim -- has had to be placed in a full-time, outpatient mental health treatment program, five days a week, because this school refused to protect him. The emotional and financial toll on his family has been immense. If you're a parent, and you care even slightly about your child's emotional safety, academic growth, or mental health -- avoid this school. The administration will ignore warning signs, excuse inadequate behavior, and sweep serious issues under the rug to maintain the illusion that "everything is fine." Nothing is fine. And the longer you leave your kid here, the more damage they might endure.

And then she tried to write a nice description of how GB is growing the kids as a whole, academically, blah, blah. But the truth is they are not teaching the kids anything and the kids are falling behind the district in test scores. The teachers (Fortman and Adams) are so lazy and Bingaman doesn't do anything about it. How can they are growing the kids if they are not teaching them the basics in math, reading, and science. And then there is Bingaman's attitude of, 'Oh, I am the principal so I don't need to talk to the parents or the students'. I have never seen her trying to say hi to the students or any parent at any school event. So awkward when the parents try to avoid her. But really, I don't really care about this BS. I feel sorry for the kids who will struggle in middle school.

Stay for K if you can afford it. You are getting a value for your money beyond words. Our new school has a chicken farm and beehive the children tend and an outdoor eco lab in addition to the playground and and indoor pool with weekly lessons for pre-k and K. Glencoe Montessori is so much better than this new school (that is fabulous). My children are grateful, creative, and the one-on-one system at GMS and HPS for reading and pre-reading has saved my daughter's life practically. When you have trouble reading in the higher grades the stress for the child is heartbreaking. When my daughter attended GMS (Sue, Ro, Miriam, Beth) she was unstressed and they had her creating journal entries everyday of kindergarten that were super long and filled with phonetically spelled ideas she was having and she was proud to share her ideas and this was the best way to start out. Reading and writing was exciting for her in these early years of development. Your child deserves this!
