Each year during tax time I go online to turbo tax or whatever it is called and run my W-2's, 1040's, 1099's etc through only to be disappointed by some number that is conjured by some proverbial magic wand. Naturally I never believe this number the godawful program comes up with. This is where Sechrest & Bloom come in--they work their butts off to make sure I'm getting the most bang for my buck. Sure it's a little more spendy than paying your computer to do the work, but the individualized service, friendly staff, and (of course) the pretty number on my refund check makes it an investment worth making. If you are looking for an accountant who does a top notch job, follows up with you, and remembers your name--this is the accounting firm for you. Bonus points for them for finding me after I was negligent in providing a new e-mail address and phone number.

I discovered Mark Stanhope when I moved to the area in 2016 and found that my tax situation had…read morebecome too complex for me to handle alone, and while using a well known tax preparation software. Mark told me what documents I would need, including returns from the preceding 2 years. He submitted amended returns for my previous 2 years and got me refunds on both. He then filed my current return and although we did owe some money, I now had much higher confidence in the accuracy of the filed returns, both federal and state. Since that first year, our situation has continued to grow in complexity and I no longer worry when tax time comes 'round. I fill out Mark's annual summary survey and return along with my receipts and am amazed that I typically get back my completed return, ready to file, in just a few days. Though we have had a few years where we owed money on our returns, this year (2021) was very tough for my wife and me. I had a job change and my wife had 2 job changes, we sold our house and moved from MA to NH. Coupled with some 401K rollovers, and our tax situation was even more confusing and beyond my ability to manage. Mark, again, looking closely at all options, found us a surprisingly large refund for the year. I was thrilled this filing season to learn that Mark will be able to continue filing our Federal and MA returns even though we have moved out of state. Mark is personable, professional, and very knowledgeable. I have no reservations whatsoever in recommending him to anybody who is looking for any of the services his firm offers.

I used Midge Belcourt to file amended returns. She and her office are totally disorganized and…read moreunprofessional. I cannot state my disappointment in my experience with Midge strongly enough. I retained Midge in January of 2008 to help me file an amended return from two years previously. I paid her for the filing of my return in April of 2008, at which time she assured me everything was ready to go and I should not have any problems. However, she not manage to file the returns for a full year. I was very anxious about being charged interest and penalties, and contacted her repeatedly, pleading with her to get the returns I had already paid for filed. She had an endless line of excuses about vacations, corporate deadlines she was dealing with, et cetera. I did not have the financial resources to hire another accountant to do the work I had already paid Midge for, but realized later I should have found a way to pay a different accountant because I ended up paying a $1300 penalty as a direct result of Midge's negligence. She failed to file my returns on time as promised, or as a I paid for. She later refunded part of the fees I paid, but she never offered any kind of apology for her negligence. Do not entrust your taxes to this unethical, unprofessional firm.

They were never more…read morecomplicated than a bank statement and some pay stubs, so I never worried about it until this year when I had exercised some stock options. I figured it would be pretty simple, but 18 hrs and a toner cartridge later, I could barely scrape together enough info to fill out my extension, which sucked since I really wanted my stimulus check sooner than later. Did I mention I was unemployed at the time? Tail between my legs, I headed for Cyndie based on some random yellow pages reviews. Even though I had attempted to do them myself *and* had made some incorrect assumptions *and* handed off a mass of jumbled printouts and random scribblings, she was very professional, fast, and super nice. She even caught a little handwritten memo I'd made to myself about an ancient savings account that I had forgotten to tell her about during our initial meeting. Hurrah for being thorough! I thought her fees were on par with other tax prep services (simple filing, renter, not self-employed, MA and federal ~ $160) and was totally worth it considering the time I'd already spent plus the extra fees for e-filing Turbo Tax or H&R Block would have stuck me with ( ~ $80 + HUGE UNCERTAINTY). Plus she answered all my additional questions for free, which other chain services don't do. Anyway, Cyndie really put my mind at ease. I got my refunds back within 2 weeks and my stimulus check came on time in the mail the other week as if I had never filed an extension. Awesome. I'm giving her a high-five next time I see her.
