I was looking forward to a breast reduction. I had to do my own leg work to obtain medical clearance and I made sure they had everything they needed. They lost my paperwork four times and I had my doctor at UAB and my local primary send over everything they needed. This was planned months in advance. I called a couple of months prior to the surgery date and they said they had everything. Two weeks prior to surgery a girl from their office called me to tell me that they needed my paperwork and I was in disbelief that they were once again saying they did not have my paperwork. I have a history of afib and a blood clotting disorder so with these two areas of my medical history, I, nor my husband, felt comfortable moving forward with this practice. I politely declined the surgery at this point because of the lack of assurance we had. It's perfectly normal to doubt the point of what else would they forget while I would be under anesthesia given the number of times they lost my paperwork. The office manager told me that I would not be refunded my deposit back because I was the one who cancelled. What part of that "they dropped the ball" do they not understand? Does Dr. Bentley even realize why he lost me as a patient or does he even care? I believed in this physician enough to give them payment so why in the world do they think I would cancel for frivolous reasons. The reasons were legit and they should have made this right by doing the right thing. We own our own company and when someone drops the ball, we, as the owners, make it right with our clients! Apparently not all business owners are created equal.

I felt judged the entire time he was in the room, and he rolled his eyes at me at least 4 times over my life choices, such as how long I breastfeed my children, my goals for better looking breasts, etc...I felt humiliated. It was already very uncomfortable for me to show my breasts, and have them handled and analyzed by a strange man in front of my husband....and would have been the same (or worse) even if my husband wasn't w me...I fought back tears after he left the room. He acted like I was ridiculous and freakish for favoring larger implants over anchor scars bc of my current breast size. And how dare I consider that possibility...not knowing anything about plastic surgery.... His assistant was very "salesy" and tried to talk me into a lift or reduction instead of implants. Maybe that's my only option...but the scars were VERY visible no matter how hard she tried to convince me they weren't. I understand bc of my anatomy, I may have limited options, but we said from the beginning, anchor scars were a deal breaker. His portfolio was unimpressive, and a lot of women's breasts looked better to me and my husband in the before pics than the afters. I wouldn't hire a plastic surgeon for their personality, and this one was supposed to be a "perfectionist," but the way he judged me the entire time, and pretty much made me feel incredibly unattractive and stupid made me want to leave his office as fast as possible. I'll have a second opinion this Friday. Hopefully this surgeon will have some respect for the people who are considering hiring him.

He was paid thousands. He removed one (1) pound, by his report. I paid him extra to perform liposuction on my back, but my husband complained there was no difference. My left arm had only a long, long scar to show for the surgery. My right arm had a large divot out of the upper portion. I guess that is where the one (1) pound was removed. Also, his office manager, He, collected for the hospital Bill, which she said they paid. BUT, the hospital billed Medicare and was paid by Medicare!!! Dr. Steinmetz has refused to give me a refund. Other doctors have seen the work he did and said he "didn't know what he was doing" (the cosmetic surgeon I paid $10K to repair Dr. Steinmetz's mess); "should have gladly refunded your money entirely", another cosmetic surgeon; "You should sue him", two of my other personal physicians. I have tried to work this out with Dr Steinmetz to no avail. He took advantage of me. He abused me. What he did amounted to Assault and Battery in my mind. He seems so charming in the office. So does his office manager. He tries to say he offered to "fix" his botched job, but what he offered me was an in-office, local anesthetic, procedure which could not possibly have corrected my arms and back without almost killing me. I am a retired surgical RN so I know what I am talking about!!!

I was deciding between two plastic surgeons to do a double breast reconstruction from a fire 26 years ago. I had skin graphs after the fire, and then a reconstruction the year after. But I never have had normal looking breasts since the fire. I went to the original reconstructive surgeon from 26 years back, who gave me a new quote for the reconstruction surgery which was high, and he also said I would need another surgery after that one. Neither would be covered by insurance and for two breast surgeries I would be paying well over twenty grand. Even though money was an issue, I also didn't want to use someone who was cheap just because I couldn't afford it. I went to see Dr. Beckenstein to get a second opinion after researching and finding how much reconstructive breast work with women with breast cancer he performs. The vibe in his office was so warm and loving, not like the cold and sterile environment of the other plastic surgery office. I met with him, and found him to listen, to be to the point, and to have new ideas. He came up with a different treatment plan involving one surgery, retaining and grafting my nipples, and was able to get insurance to cover the mastopexy. It was a miraculous day when that happened. But if insurance had denied it, it would have been 1/2 the price for out of pocket pay for reconstructive surgery as the other physician, and would not require a second surgery. He would graft my nipples during surgery, and we would use one of his four tattoo artists on staff to perfect it down the line. When I asked the other physician how we would do tattooing, he was very unconcerned and just said, "We will figure that out later." Well, the main reason I wanted this surgery was to have nipples and areolas that looked like what they were supposed to be. One surgeon had four people on staff trained to create that illusion, while the other said we would figure it out later. I had the surgery last week, and the work he performed was nothing short of a miracle. The staff has been so helpful, and they make sure you have every key person at the office's contact info for questions during the pre and post op process. He called us back over the weekend when we had a question, and has been such a blessing. I would recommend anyone who is interested in a procedure to go see him. Not only is he an expert in the field, his prices are very fair, his staff is top notch, and his surgical hand is amazing. Thank you Dr. Beckenstein.

I'm a new patient for primary care, so I was required to come an hour early to fill out paperwork (the entire visit including new patient paperwork and then bloodwork in the lab after my examination took right around two hours total). There's nothing significant to say about the office--it's your run-of-the-mill doctor's office with fluorescent lighting, a few magazines, and a TV on the wall tuned to HGTV. I was, however, impressed with the level of care. I met the nurse (Nikki) first, and she was very receptive and friendly as she weighed me and took my blood pressure. I waited for about 15 minutes in the examination room before Dr. Looney saw me. He was also great--very professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. He asked me a lot of questions about my previous doctors and care, and was very attentive as he allowed me to ask all the questions I had for him. After my visit, he led me back to Nikki's station to make my next appointment, and then they sent me off to the lab (the bloodwork is done at Quest Diagnostics, which is a laboratory on the same floor as the doctor's office). I also like the fact that they use MyChart, which is an online portal where you track your exam/test results, bloodwork, prescriptions, and future appointments. This patient portal also allows you to send notes directly to the doctor between visits. Overall, I enjoyed and appreciated this new practice and everyone who worked there. Now that I'm officially in their system, I'm hoping the next visit won't take quite as long.
