My all-time favorite grocery store. It's full of old-fashioned country charm and pleasant…read moreAmish/Mennonite/Christian staff. There were meats and multitudes of fruits and veggies straight from the farm. Too bad it's well over an hour drive from my home, otherwise I'd be here at least weekly. PROS: Some of the best prices I've seen on bacon, ham, sausages, various cheese, lunch meat, bulk flours and popcorn kernels. There are tremendous discounts on other packaged foods close to expiration date. Nice selection of smaller brand goods throughout entire store. Great candy selection, including hard to find German black licorice ropes rolled into little wheels. Lots of other licorice flavors too. Local milk in big glass jars. Log rolls of fresh butter. Various local honey, jellies, and jams. Homemade peanut butter ground in-house. Homemade pickles in white tubs. 50 pound sacks of Michigan white potatoes. Jabba the Hut sized hubbard squash. Lots of hidden deals within the frozen food section...six New York bagels @ $3.99...five pounds of pepper-jack breaded chicken breast chunks at $10.99. A special shout-out to the BEST in-store bakery I've ever seen. Most everything is made from scratch; breads, fruit pies, cream pies, fried hand pies in wax paper sleeves, various cookies, donuts, etc. They have the BEST cinnamon rolls and pecan sticky buns on this Earth (see pics). These are worth the drive alone. Note the ingredients are simple with King Arthur flour as the base. Great prices too. One of the best deli hot food counters I've ever seen. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravies, various hot vegetables, etc. Great prices. Looks like grandma made it all. In addition to the deli counter, there is a separate in-store cafeteria selling great lunch style foods like Reuban sandwiches, hamburgers, chicken fingers, fries, soups, etc. They cooked my hamburger in a cast iron pan on an old iron stove. Delicious! Great price too. The staff were extremely polite, helpful, and pleasant. Love the old fashioned check-out counters. They hand bag everything too. CONS: Too far from my home. Cramped aisles. Like any grocery store, not all the prices can compete with Wal-Mart. SUMMARY: Need a break from urban attitude? This is a no-brainer choice. Feels like walking back in time when people were nicer and food was better. Load up and drive out to the country, pretend it's a mini-vacation.

Great place to shop for a variety of groceries, fresh fruit and produce, with good prices to boot…read more Some of the items that you wouldn't find at major grocery chains are sold here. Employees are helpful and courteous. It's almost like a combination grocery store and old country store.

**Shorted me $3 and were weird and rude about it**…read more Went in. Started shopping. I was told immediately if I grab anything from the front I can't go through the rest of the store with it. I thought, sure maybe people steal $1 eyelashes. I set them up front. Nice music and all female employees. Love that. Found some things. Prices were better last time I was there a few months ago. Suddenly have to poop. Ask a nice young lady if they have a bathroom. She tells me no. Made my way back to the register. Decide not to get the dumb small stuff like the eyelashes because I'd grabbed the larger items and it was an impulse purchase. Their loss. The cashier is new and I understand that. Make light jokes but let her know I think I've been shorted. She uses two calculators. She assures me that I'm wrong. She says 'phew yeah I don't want to get in trouble' which made me worry for her. What do I know I'm dyslexic and have dyscalculia? I thought. I get back to my car. $63.85 total. $50 paid by card. $20 in cash. I received $3.85. I call a trusted friend. Double check. Darn, I have to go back in and I'm gonna poop my pants. I'm thinking I'm owed $10 because that's how my brain works. I'm confused by my calculator saying I should've received $6.15. But I go in and say 'hey I'm sorry but I did get shorted like $10'. Cashier calls for help through a window behind her register. The owner or head honcho comes around from the back. An elderly woman with 80s hair. She seems annoyed. Sighs deeply. 'You'll have to wait until Monday.' I show trepidation. 'Or' -she gives a laundry list of body language indicating she does not want to- 'I can take apart the register right now and you wait ten minutes.' I have to poop. I'm supposed to have cash for laundry today. I tell her that. But also explain it's only a few bucks. She doesn't want to budge. She must be thinking I stole $3 and want to steal more things in their employee bathroom? I'm not sure. She says Monday she can give me back the money. I go to my car. Take a deep breath. Then I head back in. Decide to return everything that was returnable. I wasn't told it wouldn't be immediate. So hopefully I don't have to wait until Monday to see my card transaction returned. Then I tell her if it isn't rectified in her old cash register now, it might mess up her accounting for Monday. That there could be other small mistakes before then. In my experience as a business owner. She "takes apart the register". It takes 5 minutes. She hands me $6.10. Which is still wrong. But let me get out of here to rush home to poop. Get the evil eye from an employee. I say thank you. Moral of the story. Their method of preventing theft loses them money and customers. They are willing to sacrifice good customer service to prevent theft. 2 out of 3 employees I saw were friendly. I'd made enemies with the 80s hair lady and her tall confidant over a mistake their new cashier made that was a $3 difference. Could've just checked my receipt. Corrected the issue without making me feel like I'm some thief ruining their time. Won't be coming back after that nerve-racking experience and will tell anyone who listens how weird that was.

Don't waste your time. So, we've been pretty happy as Costco…read moremembers for most of the past 15 years. We recently relocated and the two closest Costco warehouses are each about 30 minutes away, and the BJs is about 15 minutes away. So, we decided to give them a shot. First off, the prices on the shelf are okay, but you have to clip coupons in order to really get the perks of membership. I know my grandmother got a bit of a thrill clipping coupons and earning extra savings, but I have a career, a home and a family; I don't have time to clip all of the coupons. But, okay, fine, we'll muddle through... In November, they offered a free turkey to any member who spent more than $100. We spent more than $100 (our first visit was upwards of $400). We clipped the coupon when it arrived on the app. I figured there would be some demand for a free turkey, so I arrived at the store opening that Saturday morning. As expected there was a little traffic; probably two dozen people lined up for the free turkeys. The shelf was almost empty (about 10 birds), the largest turkey was about 12 lbs. The associates working in that department seemed to be caught off guard, as they scrambled around wondering why there was a crowd, they mentioned there was a pallet of frozen turkeys in the back and agreed, after some pressure from the crowd, to get it out. About 20 minutes later they wheeled a half dozen turkeys out of the back. I imagine there were more that they had, but I got mine and got on my way. At the register, the clipped coupon for my free turkey didn't work and I had to have a manager override the purchase. All-in, kind of a hassle, they clearly weren't prepared for the predictable crowd, and did their morning employees a disservice by not stocking the freezer the night before, but okay, I got a free turkey. The last straw came when we made an online purchase with them for a Christmas present for my daughter. The item, a clamp for a phone for her bike was ordered through their website and cost about $25. When the package arrived, all that was there was the envelope with a slit in it and an empty box. We tried processing a return online, but the instructions on the website told us to go to the store. I did. At the store, the customer service rep was nice enough, but didn't know how to help. The assistant manager was short and unhelpful, and instructed me to go online to process the return. I made clear that I did not appreciate the runaround and that at this point it's less about the $25 and it's about good customer service. I pay for a membership here, so I can have access to relatively good deals on larger quantities of things I need to furnish and feed my family of 6. I expect that when a branch of their company gets something wrong, that the individuals in my local store who see me a few times a month can remedy the situation easily enough. Especially if the issue is as small as a $25 return. My request was met with indifference and disdain. I was given an 800 number to call and told that nothing else could be done for me in the store. I asked to speak with the store manager. He came over and was not kind. He first told me that he didn't need to hear what I had to say because he already heard it from his assistant. When I expressed that I felt disrespected and disregarded, he allowed me to speak and tell my story anyway. I finished, he didn't care, he understood that this $25 would cost his company my business, I left. I spent 40 minutes on the phone (I think to Mexico) to process my return. I was assured that once the vendor agreed to the refund I would get an email. We'll see. At any rate, save your time on the hassle, disappointment and disrespect, just get a Costco membership..

Even better, the salesperson said we could shop online at BJ's.com or the other store in Madison Heights until the Chesterfield location opened. I went and checked out the Madison Heights store. Very nice. Basically it's very similar to Costco. Friendly staff. Good meat selection. Nice beer and wine prices. Marginal produce. More national brands than Costco and a much better gas rewards program. Overall I'm pleased with the store. So about three weeks later the membership cards and documents arrive. The membership expiration date was listed as February 2021. This was not consistent with what the salesperson said and not prorated to reflect the anticipated Chesterfield store opening date. So I call BJ's customer service hotline. No one answers. I'm placed on perpetual hold. I sit there paying for a membership on a store that hasn't even opened yet and a customer service line that no one answers. The next day I call again, after 17 minutes on hold I get a human to speak with. They tell me no problem, when the Chesterfield Store opens go wait in the customer service line and they'll change the membership date to reflect the actual store opening date. Typical hawkish East-Coast customer service, putting the onus on the customer to fix the situation. Note to management, I see a culture clash brewing. The Midwest people don't like a Jersey attitude. Even worse, some days later, I place an order on BJ's com. The product arrived damaged. Seriously damaged. The item was shipped in a thin box that was packaged amateurishly. Why on Earth would anyone use this box and packaging to ship a heavy fragile item? It was like the warehouse clerk was being deliberately passive-aggressive to damage the item. So I call the customer service line. Again no answer, perpetual hold. I ended up calling my credit card company, they took care of it quicker than BJ's did. Based on my experience, the actual retail store was nice. Everything else? A clown show.
