My new favorite place to grab a quick lunch in Ambler. The soups are homemade and full of flavor. I've had the Italian wedding which has pieces of fresh sausage in it and magnificent broth along with soft noodles. This spot has Bassett's Ice Cream, Italian delights, including Panettones. Any hoagie, or sandwich, heck, you can even buy / sell bitcoin at this location according to a sign on the outside. It is a very old school deli with a Pac Man arcade game and a Gopher Gottlieb pinball machine. It's taken me almost a year but found my new favorite spot for lunch in Ambler. The first time my hubby and I went there they were closing in the next 10 minutes and gave us an attitude when we tried to order. So we left but my son said to try again because he likes the high end over priced frozen Italian food they sell. So we went and my hubby ordered ham and cheese with mayo on a kaiser roll. Plain, nothing else. The roll was abnormally small, the ham was abnormally thick, and there was two or three pieces of ham just folded in half and the sand was falling apart. All for the outrageous price of $9.50! $9.50 for two or three pieces of ham and two pieces of cheese with mayo on a tiny roll. Unbelievable! I will never be returning to this deli again. read more

I've had Costa's Deli a few times and never had a bad sandwich. However, as far as hoagies go, there are much better and cheaper options out there. The roll is pretty decent. They must either use Liscio's or Conshy bakery. Two of my favorite. The sandwich is not overflowing with meat which makes it easy to eat. Meat is good quality and no fat. The sandwich was not traditionally made. Usually meat is put on the whole roll and LTO is placed on top. On this one meat and cheese was put on one side and LTO was placed on the other side of the roll. This made it so nothing came out of the roll when you bit into it like what happens on a traditionally made hoagie. My preference, which was made popular at Mike Schmidt's hoagie was to have some meat on bottom LTO in the middle and more meats on top. This allows you to get all meats and veggies in one bite. But I digress. As far as eating, this was relatively mess free. But that's only because there was not a lot to the sandwich. Now why only 3 stars? First, this is not a substantial sandwich. For almost $12 a sandwich, you can get a better sandwich at a lot of other places. Second, the woman making my sandwich sneezed about 3 times while making it and I'm not entirely sure she caught her sneeze, if you know what I mean. Third, they say they're bringing South Philly to the burbs, but that was a really really long time ago. This is not a South Philly hoagie. If you want one of those go to the new Penna's in Springhouse (very good, amazing rolls, but pricey!) or Goomba's in Colmar. I wouldn't eat here, place is old and dingy, and I'd just find more to complain about. But hey, my favorite bars are dive bars. Frankly, this was a slight step up from Wawa. read more

I've driven past this deli for years. Had family coming in and thought I'd give it a try. It's an old world Italian deli family-owned and in the 3rd generation. The owner Dave treated me like family and all I was getting was potato salad. They make most things themselves. Went back a few days later for some roast turkey that they make (don't have to be worried about highly processed cold cuts like from the food store). Had a cup of coffee - it was great. I'm eying their milk shakes made with Basset ice cream. Dave says they're the best shakes and I am looking forward to having one! read more

I managed to find this amazing spot while in town for work. I ended up visiting 3 nights in a row. The staff was great, very friendly. 1st night I had a Philly cheese steak, which was perfect. The 2nd night I had the Meatball sub. Their sauce was flavored perfectly!! I also had one of their amazing Strawberry shakes! My last day, I ended up having another Philly Cheese Steak. Growing up in the area I'd drive past this place every day on the way to school, but I never stopped to try it. That changed today and I regret never coming here before. I got the mushroom cheesesteak with onions and sauce on the side because I wasn't sure what the sauce was. It was fresh hot marinara. The cheesesteak was delicious. A perfect juicy steak with creamy melt cheese and perfectly cooked mushrooms and onions. The marinara brings a nice tomatoey and herby flavor. To top it off , the bread was nice and soft with the perfect amount of chewiness. I'll have to try the Italian hoagie and the best milkshake in town next time! read more

I had the roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone and spinach. The sandwich was a little light on the pork and did not seen fresh. David came by and asked about the food, showed him the sandwich and he made a new one. It was very good the meat was pleantyful and freshly made. Well I've ordered a few times, and I will say the food is good. The problem I always run into is that my food is never ready when I arrive, when I order ahead. which is suppose to help cut down time as I'm ordering my lunch before I take my lunch break as to have time to eat. Today I ordered I was told 15 to 20 min, so I went to the post office and then to the bank. which took longer then 20 mins, when I arrived my food wasn't ready. This is not the first time. Costa's has started to stock a wide variety of DI BRUNO BROS meat's and cheeses. They also provide gourmet cupcakes that look amazing. All the cupcakes are made by Gina and she has won the Gold Medal at the Atlantic City Specialty Cake Competition. I'm said to say I was very underwhelmed with my experience here. I had high hops after reading he Yelp reviews but was disappointed. Service was slow for starters, we sat at the bar for about 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged. While waiting we watched the cook prepare the food and bicker with who I assume was the owner. We placed our order: two cheesesteaks, cheese fries and two milk shakes. The steaks were ok but that was about it. My black and white milk shake was loaded with chocolate syrup and ice chunks. We were served exactly one mugs worth of frozen fries which with topped with lukewarm cheese wiz. Last but not least I question the cleanliness of this place. I watched the staff go from the register handing money to the flattop grill handling food without washing their hands. I would not visit again. read more

Ordered a Cheese steak for the 2nd time from Costa's Deli in Ambler. Once again, the sandwich was perfect. Great sandwich that was more than enough for one person to consume with a great taste and a very fair price. Placed the order at 6:45 PM and it was ready by 7:00 PM when I arrived. Considered trying a sandwich from more well known Pizza place in Maple Glen. Over an hour wait to pickup the order and were $3.50 more than Costa's Deli. There's a lot to like about this old-fashioned deli in Ambler operating in its 70th year. It has both counter and booth seating, aisles stocked with snack items and some basic Italian products, and it still has a pinball machine! I stopped in for a BLT (Bacon,lettuce, tomato) sandwich and some fries. The BLT was not the best one I have ever eaten, there could have been a few more fries in the order ... but the service was friendly and the conversations enjoyable while waiting for and eating my lunch. I'm sure I'll stop in Costa Deli again when in the area ... btw - there's a free parking lot next to and behind it. read more

After quite a few visits, and trying things over and over again, I'm sad to say Costa's is not worth it. It has the neighborhood charm of an old malt shoppe, but the buck stops there. The deli products always look a day or two older than they should be. The sandwiches are just good enough, but there are better places in the area. I lived near Costa Deli for 25 years before finally trying it a few years back. I missed out on a lot. First and foremost, it is my #1 spot for an Italian hoagie. These are the hoagies of my youth, before "let's put a half pound of meat between a roll so it falls apart when you bite into it -- if you can bite into it (ala Pudges) -- became the gold standard. These aren't small sandwiches, they are just right and delicious. The meat is fresh, sliced in house and they do a healthy business selling steaks and hoagies. My first visit was because they were listed as a regional favorite for Cheesesteaks and their steaks are very good. Again, don't go expecting a roll overflowing with meat, but it's a healthy amount and they cook it in front of you. I will also put a plug in for their homemade macaroni salad which is a very light mayo/oil base and tastes like grandma made (because she probably did). The milkshakes, the 50's decor (original but well maintained) and the groceries are a nice mix. This is the corner store you've been looking for. Yes, the family is a mixed breed. They argue and can be surly with each other, but never with the customers. David is super friendly and chatty, the rest of them tend to be quiet with the customers but on every visit they ask me how my food is and if I need anything. I guess it depends on the day. My first visit with this place the cheesesteak were amazing, I recommended this place to my friends and was impressed. Second visit, opposite experience; expensive, unfriendly, lack luster, skimpy cheesesteaks. My order was wrong I order a cheesesteak with everything and cheese whiz, one regular cheese steak, and a buffalo chicken.. I got 3 cheese steaks, one had onions and peppers. The other 2 dry beef steak and cheese. Very disappointed. Additionally, while I waited for my order, which I called in 30 min ahead. The person answering the phone was extremely rude to the customer ordering food. Strongly telling the person that they needed 20 mins to complete the order, that they were very busy( 2 people in the deli)and to let them get off the phone so they can start.
