In a not so distant life I spent a ton of money on comic books, own a lot, and stopped reading them about 5 years ago. When we made our trip to Columbia, one of the places I didn't know we were going to stop in was Cosmic rays! Cosmic rays specializes in a lot of things, including video games, toys but most importantly, comics! They have a nice selection of comics and being surrounded by them brought back nostalgia. My gf wanted to buy some comics for a friend since we were in the area, and rather than tell her what I thought, we picked the brain of staff, who were super cool about listening to what she was looking for, and came with recommendations that were right in line with what she wanted. Super friendly staff who were happy to let us casually peruse, and ultimately we walked away with a comic featuring AOC (a comic she couldn't walk away from). Located off of Devine st, there is limited parking right in front of the shop, but we didn't have a problem finding a spot, nor did we see the lot full each time we passed the area. This place is definitely magical. The owner was a very nice older dude, and I thought it was adorable thy his wife made purses using geeky rolls of fabric featuring super heroes and more. What a team! There were a LOT of toys - and of course comics. I couldn't believe how many older toys there were, from lord Of the rings, buffy the vampire slayer, and more. There were even knock-off Legos that had superheroes like Ms Marvel, Wolverine, and Deadpool as Bob Ross. And so many comics!!! A great variety - I picked up quite a few independent comics that I hadn't seen at my home comic book shop. There's a back room filled with cheap comics - could be worth digging through. I loved this place. We spent over an hour here, just going through stuff, and ended up buying a lot. If I lived here, this would definitely be my home comic book store. read more

I can't recommend this place highly enough. Comics are everywhere! The store is on the smaller side, but man with comics all over the walls, it was heavenly. The staff were great too. Very helpful and went out of their way to take care of my family. I found some great raw comic back issues that were reasonably priced and we happen to be there on Free Comic Book Day and it was buy 3, get the 4th free. Great place! read more

I've been coming here since 2016. Ray, Greg, and Pat have always been incredibly friendly and super knowledgeable of anything I'm looking for or if I need help. A while back I was looking for a specific book/series. I went to 3 other comic book shops around Columbia and no one had it in stock. Apparently it sold out fast as soon as it hit the shelves. I was referred to Cosmic Ray's from another shop and this place gave me by far the best customer service out of all the other shops. They didn't have what I was looking for in stock, but the owner offered to special order it for me and the rest of the series as well as it was released over the following 6 months. I purchased some other books while I was there because I was really excited and in a great mood that what I had been searching for was found. I visit Ray's every week - he's got an outstanding selection of independents and graphic novels as well as some great collectibles that are very reasonably priced. Loads of back issues and variants galore! Ray is always helpful and makes every customer feel welcome and valued. Check out the awesome and ever changing selection of comics on the walls. NOTE: Parking is scarce with only 2-spaces out front right on the road so do what I do and park at Walgreens (about 100 meters away); it's well worth the trip. I just went to Cosmic Rays, my boyfriend is super into comic books and was super excited to go and purchase his first one. We go in the store and were super elated to see all the comics, video games, and toys they had available. We were there all of maybe 10 minutes, we browsed a bit and we specifically were looking for spider man comics. We found them and started to browse to see which ones we wanted. When looking through the comics the person behind the counter who I can presume based on past reviews is Ray decided to tell us "don't bend my books the ones who do will be shot and the ones who don't die from the first one will be shot again" it is really disheartening because this was his first experience, and if there were rules he could have kindly said to not bend the books. Instead he threatened to kill us. Mind you we were not even there that long and we of course want to be respectful to his merchandise . It is a shame because it seems from past reviews everyone has had a good experience. Maybe he had a bad day, but I will not recommend anyone to come to this establishment truly the most poor experience I have ever had in any store ever. read more

Alright, I'll go ahead and say it...Cosmic Ray's is my FAVORITE comic shop in Columbia, SC hands down. (No worries, I still love my friends at Silver City as well. Such wonderful ladies working there.) You walk into Ray's and instantly feel welcomed while simultaneously feeling like you've finally made it home...at least to this comic lover anyways. Doesn't matter who you are, you can walk in and instantly join in on whatever conversation's going on, plus you're greeted warmly upon arrival. The two gentlemen that work there are FRIGGIN' AWESOME. They don't throw stuff in your face and say, "I'm telling you, you have to buy this!" Well, unless you ask for recommendations, which I do quite often. They're INCREDIBLY nice people that I look forward to seeing every time I drop by, be it on Wednesdays for new releases, Saturdays for some lazy browsing or any other day I just happen to be in the area. Ray is an awesome guy. Very personable and nice to talk to. He has good comics, cool vinyl records, some books, whatever you're into. He has some arcade games you can play in the back of the store as well. If you're off divine and beltline, I suggest popping into his store for a visit. read more
