Our only experience with CPYB is their 2-week August Course, which my 15yo daughter attended for…read morethe first time this summer. She had nothing negative to report. The training was excellent, and she loved every class every day. No pointe or partnering and only two classes per day, but small things were worked on and perfected. Knowing the reputation of the school, she was fully expecting to be placed in a lower level to work on basics but was pleasantly surprised to be placed in one of the highest where the focus was on "putting everything together". She felt that she improved tremendously. The two-week program seems to leave dancer and family on their own (outside of the classroom) much more than the five-week. Housing, meals, free time, etc. is left up to individuals. (We stayed in a local hotel but will probably investigate sharing a house with friends if attending in the future.) It was much more like drop-in classes than any of the "traditional" intensives we've done. This worked well for our family and allowed time for the amazing hiking available around Carlisle as well as time for family meals rather than having to work around scheduled activities. Any concerns or questions that we had before arrival were readily addressed with phone calls. The office staff was very helpful as were the "welcoming" staff upon arrival. Once at CPYB, my husband and I had very little contact with the staff, but our daughter said that she felt very comfortable approaching teachers with questions and was always received with kindness and eager assistance. Our experience was very positive, my daughter hopes to return in the summers to come, and we recommend this program for excellent training in a positive environment.

In nearly all of the 5 classes I observed over 2 days, I saw both talent on the part of some of the youngsters and the intelligence and expertise in the teachers. They exude generosity and pride in passing down the art form they have dedicated themselves to since childhood. Though the founder/legendary teacher is no longer, her legacy seems to be thriving...God bless this worthy institution.

Sometimes the best adventures are the ones I barely plan. I was scrolling social media when I…read morehappened across an event at the Carlisle Theatre for a Halfway to St. Patty's Day concert featuring the Kilmaine Saints. I'd never even HEARD of the Kilmaine Saints, but apparently they've been around for 18 YEARS, which made me feel like I'd somehow missed an entire chapter of Central PA knowledge. I made a mental note that the concert might be fun, continued along with my life and figured I'd see how my Saturday adventures unfolded. Well, the Universe left me just enough time to make it work. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! I hopped onto the Carlisle Theatre website, bought myself a $25 ticket for the 7:30 p.m. show and headed to Carlisle for a completely unplanned evening of Celtic rock. Purchasing my ticket online was incredibly simple, and I lucked out again when I arrived and found plenty of street parking right outside the theatre. On this particular Saturday evening, there was no circling blocks, no parking drama and no Responsible Adult Me wondering whether she'd misunderstood a parking sign. WINNING! I'd only been inside the Carlisle Theatre once before for a New Year's Eve celebration, so I was excited to actually experience a show there. The theatre has been part of downtown Carlisle since 1939 and continues to host concerts, films and live theatre, which is pretty darn cool when you think about how many old theatres haven't survived. Is the building showing its age? Absolutely! The theatre could definitely use some love and TLC. The seats, in particular, weren't especially comfortable and have clearly supported MANY generations of butts before mine. But for a couple hours? They did the job. More importantly, the theatre itself handled the concert really well. The sound was great, I had a good view of the stage and the historic setting gave the whole evening more personality than seeing the same show in some generic modern venue. The snack bar was also open, and although I resisted, the smell of fresh popcorn floating through the theatre was doing its absolute best to destroy my self-control. Staff throughout my visit were friendly and kind, and getting inside couldn't have been easier. I pulled up the ticket on my phone, they scanned it and BOOM. I was ready for my completely spontaneous Celtic rock adventure. And I'm really glad I went. There's something I love about having a historic little theatre right in downtown Carlisle where I can scroll past an event I've never heard of, spend $25 and suddenly have completely different plans for my Saturday night. That's exactly what community theatres like this SHOULD do. Give us somewhere to see something new, hear something different and occasionally say, "Sure, why NOT go to a Halfway to St. Patty's Day concert tonight?" The Carlisle Theatre may be showing its age, but there's still plenty of life happening inside it. I'll absolutely be back for another show. And apparently I need to start paying closer attention to their calendar because who knows what the heck I'll accidentally discover next!

I'm not sure how I only just heard about this place, butI made it out as soon as I could... which…read morewas a bit delayed because they are only open on Saturdays! I would be back all the time... except at $44 a family of 4, it's not exactly a cheap outing. But it is worth it. The first part of it is the facade rebuilt on the front of a warehouse to make the place look like a firehouse. They also parked a gigantic firefighting boat out front - so it's pretty easy to know you're in the right place. Entering in, you're greeted by a sea of old firetrucks. The classic 60s styles, to one built out of a converted Model T, to horse drawn pumps from the 1800s. This place is so much bigger than I expected. At the very back is a great display dedicated to fire alarms. You can even pull one (its well labeled) and it lights up a light on an antique board that used to tell firemen where the fire was. To the right is the kids room. One wall is just cubbies with kid sized fire coats, fire boots and fire fighter hats. Tons of emergency response related toys are all over the place and a wooden fire truck. Then you realize there is an actual firetruck taking up one entire wall. You can climb on it, front and back, ring the bell, and even turn the front wheels with the steering wheel. If you have a kid... or just are one at heart.. you really do need to check this place out. If I lived in the area, we would be annual members.

The museum also gave insight into how the fire men used to live at the stations. Very interesting stuff. They also give you a free poster! Recommend!
