I have a cabin on Carpenter Lake that was built in the 30s. In the process of doing some much…read moreneeded renovation, we unearthed hardwood floors under the lovely orange sculpted carpeting my parents had installed back in the 80s (presumably a closeout leftover from the early 70s and very cheap... because I hate to think my parents actually thought that stuff looked good!). My sisters have 2 houses that are next door and were built about the same time and they also found hardwoods and had them refinished about 15 years ago so we were cautiously optimistic that perhaps we might get the same result. Last summer, I had 3 guys come in to assess the floors. One guy (don't remember his name) came over from tomahawk and pronounced them unsalvageable (which wasn't hard to believe given what they looked like). He would, however, have been very happy to install laminate or carpeting to the tune of 2500 bucks for 460 square feet. Then came Dave from Rhinelander. He said they COULD be saved -- for 3700 dollars -- but it could wind up being more depending on what the level of rot was once he actually started working there. One of the Tillman brothers came out and said "oh yeah, we can do this -- I've seen a lot worse." Took some measurements and mailed me an estimate for dustless and well, er, DUSTY sanding and refinishing. The dustless would have been about 300 bucks more than the dusty. Only problem with Tillmans was that they were booked until October -- and about that point, it was almost getting too cold for the winter to do the floors. Due to circumstances that I won't bore you with but through no fault of Tillman's, we missed the fall window of opportunity and they said I would be "first on the list" after the thaw. They called just before April 15th and said they thought it was getting warm enough to get started. They came in the first week and sanded the floors down and it was UNBELIEVABLE in terms of the transformation. The porch floors had been painted bright kelly green at one point and they looked brand new. Scott Tillman called me to give me an update (I live in NC so this was all done long distance) and said there were a couple of spots that from where the carpeting had been stapled down that had black marks and try as they did, they just couldn't get rid of those marks. Frankly, I didn't care because, well, anything had to be better than the orange carpeting (sorry mom and dad ... I know you meant well!) They came back the following week and put down 3 coats of oil and satin finish. The end result is simply UNBELIEVABLE. I showed the pictures to folks who had not seen the cabin and they literally thought I had put down brand new hardwoods in this dilapidated (but beloved) 85-year-old fishing shack! They thought I was lying when I said they were the same floors. THEN I got the bill yesterday. Now mind you, I have been working on renovating this cabin for nearly 2 years now and EVERYTHING has come back about 2/3rds more expensive than the quote so braced myself for the worst -- got out a bottle of tequila and opened the bill. DANG if the final bill wasn't actually nearly 300 bucks LESS than the original estimate. Not only do I have the most glorious hardwoods in my cabin now but by having them redone, it was at least 1/2 the cost of covering them up with even the cheapest tile or laminate or carpeting. I can't speak highly enough of the Tillmans. If I hadn't talked to 2 other flooring guys and gotten everything from "can't be done -- carpet over them" to "MAYBE but 2700 is the starting point -- it will only get more expensive once I actually get in there" I wouldn't have believed it. I understand now why the Tillmans are so booked out months in advance. They, apparently, are the only ones that are willing to do the work for a fair price and their results are simply amazing. I just installed our Pier of d'Nort dock today. It is as good as advertised -- actually -- let me…read morerevise that to, "Better than advertised!!" First -- a shout out to their sales staff and showroom in St. Germaine. Though we were quite sure we wanted to purchase a Pier of d'Nort dock before we stopped to see the showroom and factory (thanks to Pier of d'Nort's excellent web site), if we had any lingering doubts they were quickly allayed by outstanding personal attention and demonstrations, especially when Deb showed us how easy it is to lift and align the dock sections prior to flipping them into the water. We were also able to see all the accessories and options on the showroom floor. As a result we made a tweak to our original plan and I'm glad we did -- the final result is definitely better. Second -- Our dock was delivered first thing in the morning precisely on the day it was promised. The delivery man was also knowledgeable about the product and answered a couple of my last minute questions when I was looking over the parts. Third -- One person can indeed install the dock with no problems. I essentially did everything myself. There was one point where I thought I would need an extra hand but by the time my wife arrived to assist me I had it figured out and was ready to go. That said, for your initial installation (when it is necessary to make leveling adjustments, etc.) two people will make it a lot easier. Now that I've got everything adjusted the way I like it I do not anticipate any problems taking it in or setting it up again by myself. (BTW - I'm 67 years old, of average fitness and strength, and I can see myself putting it in and taking it out for at least another ten years, maybe more!) Fourth -- we ran into one glitch mounting the "corner cutter." After a two minute call to Pier of d'Nort we clearly understood OUR mistake and a few minutes later everything fit like a charm. And finally -- now that it is in -- I love it. It is good looking. It is stable. It is also adaptable and expandable. If we decide that the "L" would be better going the other direction it would be no problem to do so. If we decide it needs to be longer to accommodate a different boat, that too would be no problem. If we want to add a bench, or flag pole, or cleats or bumpers, or any other accessory, just buy them and attach them. It could't be simpler. If you are thinking about a Pier of d'Nort dock (especially if you like what you see but are concerned about the price) I encourage you to read the other five star reviews and check out all the specs, details and testimonials on Pier of d'Nort's web site. I'm already glad that I decided to go with Pier of d'Nort. In fact, I feel like I already recouped some of my investment on the initial installation alone! Addendum: It is now just about the end of October and I can report that removing a Pier of d'Nort dock is just as easy as putting it in. I did it all by myself with no problems. The best part was being able to leave it in for late season boating and fishing and then not having to worry about getting into the icy cold water to take it out. Likewise, I expect to put it in the day after the ice goes out next year. Two thumbs up! Five stars all the way.
